Listen darling
Who's gonna hold and squeeze me tight
Now that she's gone out of my life
Who's gonna make me feel the way she used to do
Now that my love is overdue
Now that my love is overdue
Well, I'm all alone in the wilderness
Searching to find some peace and rest
She wasn't the best girl
But she brought happiness into my world
And now I'm a prisoner of loneliness
Yeah now I'm a prisoner of loneliness
That's what I am
Now I'm a prisoner
Of loneliness
Listen darling
Whose voice is gonna say goodnight
Now that she's gone out of my sight
Who's gonna tell me lies and let me think they're true
Now that my love is overdue
Now that my love is overdue
Now that my love is overdue
I just don't know what to do honey bear
Stop making me blue
Stop it baby - yeah
Stop making me blue
Why don't you stop
Making me blue
Now I'm a prisoner
Stop it, baby
Stop it

I can't believe what I'm reading here. "I've been listening a lot to Bob Marley, hence I know reggae". Really? Really?
HHhaaaa Yeah Dandeeee what else can ya do but laugh ...
Reminds me of a guy I worked with once .. he said to us one day...
.... Yep I'm really into the blues I got a B.B.King album

Well, it's the best of the four so far for me but that's just because it's a cover of a good song written by someone else!
My main problem with it of course is that I (like the majority of people in the world outside of Stones message boards) simply do not find Keith Richards an effective lead vocalist. That fact alone, I realize, pretty much exempts me from offering an opinion about Keith's solo music.
I see this as a "but the Emperor has no clothes!" situation but I recognize that almost all of you see it another way. In any event, with four universally acclaimed "great" tracks Keith is well on his way to an album for the ages. In my opinion LET IT BLEED only has six unequivocally great tracks; Keith's already 2/3 of the way there with the four sneaks from CROSSEYED HEART!
I won't comment on the "is it reggae?" issue other than to say that no, it isn't. The Congos, Bunny Wailer, Peter Tosh, The Wailers, and Toots and the Maytals (not meant to be an exhaustive list) play reggae. Keith does not. The Clash came kinda close but that's about it for pasty English rock stars and reggae.

I'm looking forward to people telling me that the title track isn't a real blues

My Second Opinion after 4 songs in a row.
I FAKING LOVE IT.
Exactly lol thanks to LongBeachArena72 I'm so enlightened that basically Keith can't sing and he's genuinely isn't Rock n' roll, Rythym and Blues, pop, country, reggae, doo wop, Motown, etc. His whole life has been a lie and as a result he's wasted mine. Poor me, I canceling my pre-orders, getting rid of all Keith related material. What a mistake to have followed this man's phony journey the last 40 years of my life.

Do you think the Keith bashers are genuinely jealous of Keith's fantastic new album cos Mick cant do it anymore
They go on and on about Mick's diversity and that Keith always does the same thing. WHAT UTTER RUBBISH. This album is full of mixed and varied styles in music. Its refreshing and imaginative, Keith still loves his music and his roots and it shows
He is not just motivated by money from over prices concert tickets, he is actually doing something creative
Good luck to him, i'm tired of the minority of people on here that slag this brilliant album
Go start a Mick album thread and leave this one alone thank you
you are ruining the songs for the rest of us with your one sided negativity..

No one's ruining any songs for me.
Genres are always fuzzy, and reggae is a very diverse style.
Love Overdue is now my second-favourite of the five tracks Keith's released.

As I predicted somewhere at the beginning of this thread (before anything had been released):
"Keith will show who is the mastermind behind the Stones", and it's been proven that my prediction was correct (imo).
Diversity, authenticity, sincerity, creativity...these are a few of the things lacking when I hear a Mick solo album.
Not to bash Mick as he's obviously the greatest front man in rock and roll as part of the Rolling Stones,
but when it comes to doing something new and 'creative' on his own, we get something like 'Let's Work' or Superheavy.
Sometimes I just wish Mick would know his place and stick to his role as the singer/lyricist,
and let Keith take the lead when it comes to knowing and writing great music.
If that were the case, we could have ended up with a great Stones album!
With that said - looking forward to hearing the new Mick/Don Henley collaboration.

You're right Turner. This isn't a Keith vs Mick thing at all. Of course not everyone is going to love this record. Besides, this is a Stones fan site, not a KR solo fan site.
As dandie points out critique with substance is a good thing, positive or otherwise. I think sticking to the music instead of slagging others for their opinions because they don't match your own is probably pretty good policy.
As far as this record goes, I will say Substantial Damage is certainly growing on me, the best of the bunch so far, imo. It definitely passes the TURN IT UP test.

if people want to use this track to judge the reggae genre in any way I can only suggest they go put on a Bob Marley record,
Survival perhaps, and then revisit this Keith tune with a bit of proper reggae perspective. lol

wow, that's interesting. at first you didn't like "substantial damage". it's always interesting to see how our tastes change with time. i actually thought gimme shelter was the worst track on hot rocks (my first stones album) and now it's my favorite song of all time.

Keith and his people have been smart in selecting songs to unlock. Only a couple of nuggets compared to most of the other ten songs, imo.

I love the strategy of trickling them out like this. I've listened to some of them more carefully than I would've if they'd just been dumped out all at once

Isn't it a bit boring to be a Stones fan if not even Keith's guitar moves you?
I'm just trying to see it from your perspective, LongBeachArena72. It's probably been 42 years since the Stones did something interesting, their sound nowadays is boring, Mick makes lousy records, Keith stinks. What DO you like?
