"Robbed Blind" has similar lyrics and similar theme as "Plundered My Soul" from Exile Deluxe

Is it just me, or does "Substantial Damage" use a substantial dose of riffs from the instrumental break in "If You Can't Rock Me"?

You're not alone: [www.iorr.org]
A bit later on Dandelion Powderman (I think it was) confirms that just one note is different

It's one of the seventeen layers of meaning in this track :E

Weighing in on the groove-plume-broom discussion
I've read some of the comments by Sssoul, Beast, Green Lady, et al. and just thought I'd throw my 2 cents in the pot...

Upon 1st listen, without question, I heard “You got the BROOM, I got the feather”. I interpreted that line to mean that the female character has more power than the male (psychologically, physically or both). The gal’s a Sadist and she’s wielding a broom – methinks she could inflict some substantial damage eye popping smiley! Poor guy has only a feather to defend himself sad smiley.

I've listened to it several times since and still hear “broom” – 100%. I’d bet the farm on it! The line makes perfect sense to me (not that R&R lyrics have to make sense smiling smiley). Regarding the person/persons to whom the song refers, IMO, it’s likely a case of writers doing what they do and creating scenarios influenced by the observations of life - not necessarily the direct reporting of the writer's personal experiences. Perhaps KR knows a couple whose female half holds all the power, speaks incessantly on an earpiece-equipped phone @ dinner and utterly ignores her mate when she’s not busy pummeling him with a broom grinning smiley.

BTW, I do like this track very much and it's great to hear that IYCRM riff. Love the weaving and slide (Waddy??). As others have pointed out, it is loosely structured, “a sketch”, etc – but I love the groove and unconventional approach. I’m sure few would agree, but I think I’d like it even better with fewer vocals – more of an instrumental with just the low humming (and more of it, used much like another instrument) and Keef singing the line “substantial damage” every now & again. That would leave more room for additional groovin', weaving & slide. Forgot to mention – I dig Keith’s "percolating" bass thumbs upthumbs up

Nice observations Plink - although I love all the hollering just as much as the other layers of the track.
The timing/phrasing of his vocals is brilliant and hilarious - a witty percussion instrument.
And until further notice I think Keith and Waddy are both doing some of the slide work.

As for broom/plume/groove/prune, it's also true that Keith does leave in little slips of the lip
like "how to plove a fool" in This Place Is Empty or (in Amnesia) "but it seems I've been around" when "and" is plainly meant.
Maybe he meant to sing "you got a big fat jumbo-size down pillow" and it just came out "broom" :E

So it must be a relative of She Saw Me Coming as well?

That's it - MYSTERY SOLVED!! smiling bouncing smiley
It's about the travails of being inadequately armed in a pillow fight.

Many thanks, Sssoul, for 'splaining smileys with beer. Now we can all devote more time to unearthing the true identity of "Anita's Friend" .

Well said Plink, I go back to a bit of RL Burnside. And Keith's bass is outstanding!

We Meet Keith Richards

I heard:
'What are we doing together
You've got the boom,
and I've got the feather'

Opposites, boom and feather. What are we doing together,
you're boom (loud, heavy, hard)
I'm feather (soft, easy, light)

Need the official lyrics. When I was 15 yrs. old, (pre- Internet!) I found a book in a funky head shop in a metro city close to me (took the bus in)
this book had all the correct RS's lyrics to songs!
Getting the correct words to JJF blew my mind, lol.
That book was pure gold at the time. Long gone now.

I ordered the CD from Keith's website a while ago so I could get a few guitar picks for my son. Does that mean I won't get the bonus song?

Looks like the bonus song is thru Best Buy

That sucks. Now I either do without, or order another copy just for the extra song. ;(

It would be enough to find a photographer who actually looks at what s/he's photographing -
such strong backlighting wasn't the most courteous idea. But Keith is always beautiful by definition.

Mine is entitled "Rolling Stones Complete".
All J/R-lyrics incl. Emotional Rescue.
Could be the same?

**Maybe, are you the bloke I lent it out to about 30 years ago in MN?
I had a cool crowd I ran with back then, one of 'em has it, no worries, I memorized what I saw... but what a find at the time!

Yeah, I hear "broom" and assume it's meant to be "plume". As we all know, it wouldn't be the first time a Stones track had a word with an odd pronunciation. LOL

I don't think the song is meant to be any deeper than a guy in love with a high-maintenance woman who is clearly out of his league. She gets all his money but is too hot for him to walk away from.

Black and Blue period cover, I still have mine ! Got it in 1983 or something like that, with Tattoo You as an addendum. Lots of nice pics and terrific to have all the chords although some songs like JJF or GS didn't sound great with "standard" chords, unlike say "Lady Jane" ;-)

There is a bootleg from the listening party circulating. Mediocre quality.

If I were you I'd wait till you get the real thing. I wish I did that, actually..

I am talking about all the pictures of Keith i have seen since they stopped touring this year.
He don't look good like he did, he looks a little bloated to me
I seen and studied Keith's remarkable face for over 30 years and i think i know the difference

Only 30+? Neophyte! spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

Seriously though: It's better to avoid posting amateur diagnoses based on photos. It does no good and can do a lot of harm,
because that's how crappy rumours start - some lame gossip site will read your remark here, reprint it,
and then every other lame gossip site will have a field day, while all the while Keith is just fine.
We don't have the dates of a lot of these photos anyway; and anyway Keith's surrounded by good loving people.
He looks fine.
