Robbed Blind & Illusion are the best things he's ever done. Sublime.

Indeed, Robbed Blind is still sticking with me as one of my favorites from the album. I always hoped Keith had a great country-ish ballad in him, this seems to be it finally emerging.

Illusion did nothing for me the first 2 or 3 listens, but now I do love it. It's actually a great piece of songwriting for Keith, the way the phrasing is constructed.

"Suspicious" is THE outstanding track on Crosseyed Heart. Muses gathered around him and touched him soft and gently as he wrote and recorded that wonderful tune.

thumbs upthumbs up. Just a gift not too far behind.....

Well, I've now given it at least 50 full play throughs and there is some good songs on there...most of which are ruined by Keith's attempts to sing, well talk his way through them. He can clearly still write a decent song and when he does actually sing, like on Goodnight Irene, it sounds so so much better than this ridiculous approach he's adopted whereby he half talks the words.

For me this album would have been vastly improved had he used some of his favourite guest singers and he could have stuck to guitar (of which there is some excellent playing). That, of course, is just my humble opinion, and I can see many of you feel differently and I'm glad you are enjoying the singing!

To me, his voice has never sounded better. But I guess its not for everyone.

Puzzling to me, though, is how one can be a huge Stones fan and not appreciate Keith's vocals, considering the great songs he's sang on Stones albums.

It seems that Keith Vocal Appreciation is some kind of tribal thing (which isn't meant to belittle anyone!)
Crumbling Mice, I'm curious which tracks you hear him talking on rather than singing.
Substantial Damage is the only one I hear as only partly sung.

I think I should clarify what I'm saying here...I am a HUGE fan of Keith's singing as was. He had a fantastic voice for harmonies and lead. I wasn't refering to Keith's singing over the years, just about this recording where I feel his voice isn't up to lead vocals other than the blues and country songs, where it still is great. He just doesn't seem to be able to carry the notes on the rock songs. As I said, it's a personal thing and it does seem that i am in a minority on this. But please don't confuse this as a comment on Keith's singing historically.

Keith was never really a "good" singer. But now he is better than ever - his voice became very expressive over the years. Especially his ballad singing - as good as it has always been - has improved enormously, imo.

Interesting blog by Simon Sweetman from New Zealand:

Keith Richards vs. David Gilmour

"I mentioned in passing the other day that I quite like the new album by Keith Richards...".

vs.

"Around the same time as Keith's new album - the ghastly new solo record from David Gilmour arrived".

It is a far far better record than Gilmour's new offering. I was very disappointed with that.

The singing on Talk Is Cheap is way poorer than that of Crosseyed Heart. On the latter Keith controls his voice, has a more varied phrasing and has found his range, imo.

Compare Take It So Hard and Heartstopper.

agreed.

I'm sure 99.999% of the people on this board would agree for the most part - including me, but I wouldn't call it 'ghastly' as the blogger wrote.
The guitar solo's by Gilmour are very nice.

But try posting that blog link on a Pink Floyd and/or Gilmour forum, and you'd more than likely get the opposite reaction.
You might even be labeled a troll filled with hatred. lol

I know you said the rockers but I'm listening to Blues in the Morning and he's singing beautiful,
relaxed and happy, just the way he should - just the way anyone would want to sing it

Absolutely love Keith but always found that no, he couldn't really sing. A lot of his live performances were cringeworthy to anybody but a Stones fan. But now on CH he actually sings and his voice sounds great on most songs. Particularly love Suspicious, Illusion, Robbed Blind... I think there are only 2-3 songs on CH that I don't care about.

Nothing On Me, Something For Nothing & Goodnight Irene are the songs that are less satisfying, imo.
Maybe they should have been excluded. Only three fillers on a 15-track-album is not bad anyway.

Keith's vocals are as smooth as gravel that has been sifted of most debris,
and I mean that as a compliment of course.

There's small traces of Dylan and a maybe bit of Willie Nelson's style,
but it's still undeniably Keith, and it's better than ever.

Speaking of good old Willie -the acoustic guitar lead on Robbed Blind is reminiscent of Willie's style, and the song itself seems Willie inspired.
I can easily imagine Willie covering this in his story-telling style while playing it on his trusty guitar "Trigger".

Maybe next week, next month, next year I will feel differently, but for the last 2 weeks, my feeling about this album is something like this:

1. Crosseyed Heart ==> FUNNY
2. Heartstopper ==> GOOD
3. Amnesia ==> GOOD
4. Robbed Blind ==> VERY GOOD
5. Trouble ==> GOOD
6. Love Overdue ==> OKAY
7. Nothing On Me ==> OKAY
8. Suspicious ==> HIGHLIGHT
9. Blues in the Morning ==> OKish, BUT WEAK
10. Something For Nothing ==> VERY GOOD (A GROWER)
11. Illusion ==> HIGHLIGHT
12. Just a Gift ==> VERY GOOD
13. Goodnight Irene ==> ENDEARING, VERY WELL SUNG
14. Substantial Damage ==> GOOD, REMINDS ME OF "It Means A Lot" BUT WITH BETTER MELODY
15. Lover's Plea ==> VERY GOOD
