Long gone, but not forgotten. Keith wrote about him on a Rolling Stone article some years ago:

Here, Richie Furay tells the story behind "Crazy Eyes," the song he wrote about Gram, released by Poco on Sept. 15, 1973, four days before Gram died.

Wasn't Phil Kaufman a former "Manson family" member and didn't he supply Gram with the heroin he OD'd on and drive him to the hotel where he OD'd? Maybe Phil's "desert cremation" of Gram was to cover up evidence of a crime....

Here's Phil talking about his ol' buddy "Charlie".

Gram's records still sound fresh today. The mark of genius.

Can't help it, but I think he has a terrible voice.
Hard for me to listen to his albums, although there are some terrific songs on them.

Gram was sure a big musical influence on Keith. As well as a great friend. Those two together could have written a lot of songs had GP lived.

Return of the grievous angel. Ryan Adams. Emmylou Harris. spine tingling, if you're a GP fan.

He made his mark on the world in his brief stay.

Remove the "s" in "https", and post the link again, Steinschlag. It happens sometimes...

I remember it like it was yesterday. Philly radio was only talking about the previous day's plane crash claiming Jim Croce's life.

It's great that Gram is now seen as important but it's more important that Gram is seen as great. I saw him twice and his presence onstage was majestic. In ten minutes he could take you from a blues to a country shuffle to Chuck Berry to Merle Haggard.

It's fashionable these days to say Tiger Woods or Sarah Palin or the Pope are "rock stars". Forget that nonsense. Gram Parsons was a rock star's rock star. I still miss him terribly.

"And the music he had in him, so very few possess"

I only saw the Byrds once--I loved the band, but Gram was the only one I singled out in my diary afterwards as having been great. smiling smiley

Aquamarine-

I'm picturing you reading 16 magazine when you were little. That it was your musical bible.

That would have been a false image because I was in the UK where we didn't have 16 magazine. grinning smiley I read Rave and Fabulous, but also Melody Maker--strange combo, but still.

I used to read NME all the time. We had it in America at certain newstands/ Maybe Rave and Fabulous were the UK -16- equivalents

I think they were, pretty much. Rave was great, and it was thanks to Fabulous that I learned to wash my hair with Breck shampoo so that I could smell like Brian Jones. smoking smiley Then I just went on to read the weekly music papers.
