OT: viewing iorr.org on a mobile device
Posted by: Koen ()

Any tips for a better viewing experience of this forum on a small mobile device screen? Lots of websites these days adjust their layout based on the screen size ('responsive design'), unfortunately iorr doesn't do this (yet). I tried some of the different themes, but that doesn't help much.

Has anyone found a good way to do this?

No.

I just enlarge the page until I can read it, but of course it then doesn't all fit within the screen.

Zooming & panning would be a further advice.

From time to time I'm reading IORR on my 3" Smartphone display (480x320 pixel) when I'm traveling. It works ... not great, but it works smiling smiley

Zooming and panning was what I meant by enlarging the page--not very good at the lingo!

Zooming and panning is sooooo 2012 smoking smiley

But seriously, it would be really nice if iorr.org would modernize a bit, lots of folks with small devices these days. And my eyesight is not getting any better cool smiley

Tapatalk would indeed be the most straightforward solution, as far as I know all it requires is to add a plugin to the server. But I don't know if the iorr forum software is compatible with it.

I'm not sure if this post is within theme, but I have a real problem posting when I'm driving.

It's like, I can't look down at my smart phone for more than 10 seconds at a time...very distracting.

Dont worry about those other drivers and people, they will get out of your way, the important thing is to take your time with your texts. Improper spelling in texts can lead to a lot of problems, like this one time, at band camp, someone was typing about their Dog, but they said God, and it made no sense that God was lost.

IORR is not responsive, but thats ok. In many ways it is comforting to come back to this site and see that everything still works great! No 'issues'. All of my sites are responsive and I love it, but we do not run any forums.

On my Galaxy S3 I just double-tap and everything feels about right. It will never be perfect, but its very readable!

Take a good look at the set-up and organization of this forum, compared to other forums. This is 90s technology. It's part of the charm for me to come here and poke around this antique place, but let's be serious, probably only 20-25% of us here own handheld devices. Don't expect it to ever, ever change here either.

Say what?

The use of mobile devices to access the Internet is becoming the medium of choice, with more than two-thirds (69 percent) of all Internet users surveyed doing so daily

Surfing is the web for fun on a mobile phone is like having sex in a car, it can be done, but it is more fun with more space. I know phones can be great for checking stock quotes, doing airline check-ins, checking short emails and texts, but for other "just for fun" online it can be a hassle, and not much fun.

I would never is a zillion years tell, ask or even advise bv to make this site mobile friendly, he does it all for free now, and if he was to do a rework of IORR it is going to take a lot of time and energy and that wont be done for free, and it might mean the kaput of this fun place.

IORR works perfectly now for what it is supposed to do, thanks again bv.

Hmm, a recent Apple phone is what I've been using. It works fine, it's just--small . . .

(I didn't realize that brand names get &**^%$#'d out. confused smiley That's weird because I'm sure I've seen other such names posted.)

I played around some more with the themes and the "phorum lightweight" appears to be the most legible on a small screen. YMMV.
