Last week Rolling Stone rang up former Clash drummer Topper Headon to talk about the making of the band's classic 1982 album Combat Rock (read the full story in our new issue, on stands now). When we asked him how he wrote "Rock The Casbah," he delighted us by sitting down at his piano and playing the initial sketch of the song he presented to the band in 1981.
Headon has no memory of his original lyrics, though former Clash co-manager Kosmo Vinyl told us it was a filthy ode to Headon's girlfriend. "He had really pornographic lyrics for it if I remember correctly," Vinyl says. "Very, very pornographic lyrics."
Strummer decided to take the song in a different direction. His inspiration came from the Clash's other manager, Bernie Rhodes, who asked the band, "Does everything have to be as long as a raga?" after a particularly long take of the track "Sean Flynn."
"I got back to the hotel that night and wrote on a typewriter, 'The King told the boogie men You gotta get that raga drop,' " Strummer said shortly before he died in 2002. "I looked at it and for some reason I started to think about what someone had told me earlier, that you get lashed for owning a disco album in Iran."
By the time the song became a worldwide smash Headon had been kicked out of the band due to his severe heroin addiction. He didn't even appear in the video. "It was tough," Headon says. "In 1983 Pete Townshend paid for me to come to Los Angeles to have the electric box treatment for heroin addiction. And while I was there the Clash were playing the U.S. festival and 'Rock The Casbah' was all over the radio waves of course it hurt. The good thing about it was that we all ended up friends afterwards anyway."

That's cool. I was merely pointing out that Topper had issues with the direction in which his song was taken by Strummer, and this certainly came across in the Westway documentary.
Given that Topper has given a couple of different versions of that story (the played it for the band not knowing he was being recorded, and the played it waiting for them to arrive) I wonder if he clearly remembers what happened. I don't think he's full of it, but his memory might not be that reliable. Could be he was so out of it on smack that he doesn't remember giving the OK to Joe. For all he knows he may have been present for the entire process, physically at least. Or he's just foggy on how he recorded it, but the rest happened the way he said.
Damn. Wish I'd thought of that before celebrating...all good points.
Still, it's good to have an incomplete all encompassing complete retrospective like this...
What about the newly mixed re releases...any 'extra unheard music' in there...I'm checking them out now
Are you seriuous? Those were two of their best attributes as well as shaking up the music scene to the degree that even the Stones, McCartney and many others started to look at what the music they were making to cut back on a lot of the superfluous lard.
Ah, that's a shame. I haven't studied it that closely, I'm guessing "Rockers Galore" is probably missing as well?
You'll need the 2006 box set "The Singles" to get the missing b-sides.
Some of them are also on 1994 "Super Black Market".
Agree on the very good remastering. It sounds like the albums have regained their lost colours...
Sandinista works but you have to be patient and listen to it as a whole. It also helps to be as stoned on weed as the Clash were when they made it.

I didn't know that about Topper. Are you sure about the Combat Rock cover? Maybe the promo shots, but, and this is according to Wikipedia mind you but that info has been there a long time without being changed...
"Pennie Smith shot the cover photo for Combat Rock on a deserted railway line outside Bangkok while the band was on their Far East tour in 1982."

The Clash were not the same band after Topper was booted. Even though his replacement Terry Chimes was there in the beginning, Topper had a feel, a bounce, a groove, that gave the band a certain versatility for moving into other musical areas. But without Topper they were just another post-punk outfit with a simple flat thrashing sound coming from the kit.
To add insult to his departure, Strummer even stole one of Topper's compositions, the basic backing track and melody that Strummer put words over that became Rock The Casbah.
In the authorized Clash documentary Westway To The World, The Stones are mentioned in an indirect connection with Sandinistas. It seems that The Clash got into trouble with the locals in Jamaica. They had to high-tail it on outta there when local gangsters came gunning for them at the studio one day. It seems they didn't pay their proper "tribute" to the "right people" for use of the studio. In Westway, one of the members explains how they found out that The Stones had been in Jamaica recording in that very studio just 3 weeks before, but that they didn't encounter any problems because they knew how to "spread the cash around".
Anyway, I will go for months, years even without listening to The Clash, but whenever I come back to the music it always sounds the same--great! There's a timelessness about it, a spark, that always hits you just right.
Rude Boy remains a favorite rock movie, and Stay Free a favorite song. Mick Jones looks--and moves and talks--like a Keith Richards clone in that movie, the acquired likeness is unmistakable. He's even got the same jagged, oversized front teeth.

The Combat Rock cover was shot in Thailand. The video for Rock the Casbah was shot in Texas. Strummer did not steal any songs from Topper, FFS. Topper played on Combat Rock, including the songs he co-wrote, and was paid for publishing. It was after the album came out that he was sacked for his addiction hampering his ability to play live. It's a complete drag they kicked him out and everyone is remorseful, Topper most of all.

But, sadly, as 'exhaustive' as it appears, it is frustratingly not complete.

These recordings are _SEMINAL_ when considering The Clash's legacy as genre pushing, experimental, 12"-defining artists.
Not to mention the tid bits from On Broadway:
Every Little Bit Hurts??

Paul and Mick have said "This is it" as far as any future Clash vault releases and that is a shame. There are a plethora of live recordings that could/should have full-show releases from the middle period of the band that have gone undocumented (where is the full show that Lightning Strikes is from on On Broadway??) 1979-1981 shows far outshine the appalling, and largely unnecessary, Shea Stadium 1982. From Here To Eternity serves as a sampler of what should have come out, but is still weighed too heavily on the later years.
**And the Clash's legacy is incomplete until there is a Legacy Edition reissue of Combat Rock including the unedited, pre-Glyn Johns edit/mix of "Rat Patrol From Ft. Bragg."
I suppose they could do the same with the "Cut The Crap" album with the earlier versions of those tracks,and Sex Mad Roar (which was great live in 84), but I don't take issue with them not including that album in this set.
How can you not dig Sandinista!?? Rather than supposedly breaking them up, it is more like their ultimate statement. Watch the docu. and smoke a spliff. You'll get it then.
What is not mentioned in this thread yet is that this new box set SOUNDS incredible. The remastering is brilliant -- even the samples via iTunes on an iPad sound much better than what else has been out. Depth, layers, presence, edges. All there.
As someone else mentioned, I, too, go long periods of not listening to The Clash. But whenever I do it is an emotional, moving experience that brings me back to some wonderful times, truly world-changing high-impact music, an a longing for a time when such music mattered.

Topper and Mick did a few basic tracks without the others for Rat Patrol/Combat Rock, including the unreleased Walk Evil Talk and The Beautiful People Are Ugly Too aka The Fulham Connection, now released on the new box set. When that was left off the album, Topper recorded a solo version without Joe's lyrics called Casablanca. Topper was still having issues when they filmed Westway. He's ten years sober now. He never had any problem with Joe and Mick turning his track into Rock the Casbah. He had issues with Joe sacking him and then sacking Mick.
Incidentally, as I have mentioned, Mick is a very close friend of mine.

I was lucky enough to see them open for the Who on their first "farewell tour". The Clash totally blew the Who away. One of the most intense hours of music I have ever seen. RIP Joe.

LONDON CALLING: THE CLASH POP-UP HITS SOHO
BLACK MARKET CLASH: OPENS 7 SEPTEMBER 2013
Berwick Street is excited to announce the arrival of an exclusive, one-off experience: The Clash pop-up shop and exhibition.
Opening Saturday 7 September in celebration of one of London’s most iconic bands, Berwick Street Soho will be home to the unique exhibition – the first of its kind.
The pop-up will celebrate the release of the remastered and recorded works ‘Hits Back’ and ‘Sound System’, and will feature an exhibition showcasing unique items from The Clash archive, much of it unseen memorabilia on loan from the band. A listening lounge in which to experience the band’s remastered works and some original recordings will be open, and the store will be taken over by Fender who will offer demo sessions. Limited collections, exclusive signed artwork and guitars, vinyl and albums will make 75 Berwick Street a treasure trove of rock ‘n’ roll.

Great Great band,
London Calling, Sandinista are great albums.
saw them only once at the Jaap eden hall in amsetrdam.
Good concert, it was at the release of London calling, if i remember correctly.

Ah, that's a shame. I haven't studied it that closely, I'm guessing "Rockers Galore" is probably missing as well?

I know a guy who treats the Clash like some sort of religion. Fair enough if that floats his boat but I just never got the Clash.
In pure packaging terms though it looks good. Enjoy.

JMarko pointed a few numbers missing from Soundsystem, I noticed another one: the single mix of Magnificent seven. There are three mixes afaik:
(1) the album one, length 5:34, with Strummer yelling "maaaaagnificent";
(2) The "singles" CD which fades out on "What have we got? Magnificent!" length approx 3:40, very different sound
(3) The "Story of the clash" mix, which is the same as (2) but ends with the drum roll at approx 4:30.
(1) and (3) are the important ones, both great in different ways. Only (1) is on Soundsystem. So don't part with your Story of the Clash CDs just yet!

There is a single remix of Mag 7 that is only 2:17 and sounds best of all, except for the short length. They wouldn't put them all on this box anyway.

These recordings are _SEMINAL_ when considering The Clash's legacy as genre pushing, experimental, 12"-defining artists.

You'll need the 2006 box set "The Singles" to get the missing b-sides.
Some of them are also on 1994 "Super Black Market".
Agree on the very good remastering. It sounds like the albums have regained their lost colours...
