Absolutely. Any '72-'73 version is a treat, though I have a soft spot for the '72 NYC version. Wishing Taylor's Echoplex 2013 LIV makes an appearance.

As much as I like the MT years I love the 1978 versions. Jagger really nailed it then.

My fav is the '78 version. There is a perfect balance between the both guitarists, and Keith is more phrasing. And there is an abundance of passion in Jagger's singing, that fits perfectly to the song.

A candidate for the most emotional satisfying version I have heard, I think, might be on the early boot LIVER THAN YOU'LL EVER BE. The emotional side of it gives the song an extra dimension to this listener.

I still haven't heard a more emotional satisfying take on LIV than the original studio version. The dynamics on that one is seemingly very hard to re-create.

It might have to do with Keith's simple, but very emotional slide work, as well, imo.

There's something slightly off with the original LET IT BLEED version of 'Love In Vain', Dandelion, in my opinion, almost as if the arrangement in addition to Jagger's vocal is, perhaps, slightly scrappy. That has nothing to do with Keith's contribution, by the way, or Ry Cooder's sensitive mandolin playing, or the lack of Taylor's later wonderful live slide solo (should the discussion turn into simply Taylor verses ....). I believe Jagger's vocals in addition to the drumming are a little heavy handed on the original studio version, which was rare in this period, because generally the Stones around this time were nearly always pretty spot on. That may also account for why i've always felt BEGGARS BANQUET to be slightly superior to LET IT BLEED generally (i think the arrangement of 'Live With Me' to be slightly off too).

The best versions of 'Love In Vain' for me are the 69 and 72-73 live versions. 1969 in many ways is the more formal reading, where i think the potential of the LET IT BLEED arrangement, which perhaps doesn't quite come off, comes to full fruition. The 72-73 versions expand the song's musical potential to include a little memphis soul within the addition of the horns. I'd give the 72/73 versions the edge, i think.

Thinking of it there is no single verion that stands out in my mind. This song falls in the category of songs that are usually very good, a pretty stable standard. But the Forth worth 1972 tour version of it and others from that tour would be my pick if i had to.

The early Taylor versions: Ya Ya's and Essen 1970 definitely, although the more sleazy'72-73 versions with Mick were the ideal answer to the a bit fake-art-LIB cover version. Robert Johnson must have grinned in his grave I guess.

We're still talking powerful, right?

I'm curious why the 78 version isn't rated as more powerful in others' opinions?

- Mick's singing is more powerful
- Both guitars are prominent and definitely more loose
- The arrangement is more bluesy and less ballad-ish

Powerful in the sense of played with a to the bone blues feel, the guitar(s) in particular. Imo only Taylor could do that really good in the RS. He was the blues guitarist there.

I do love Keith's playing, and I think he's at his best as a rhythm player, but when it comes to playing in a blues-lead environment, Mick is the best and most talented to me. Either you hear / feel it or not. That's what's blues is all about. Feeling. No explanations. I am not interested in that anymore.

i personally find any LIV after Taylor left an opportunity to grab a piss break if I am at a concert, or a quick forward skip to the next track on my remote control...not inspiring at all.
