Best version of Under My Thumb

Been listening to their Altamont version, and can't get it out of my head, its such a groove,it seems that the drugs from that day had started to sink in,and everyone was in the same place, until the end when all hell breaks loose...

Without a doubt the studio version!!! live version I love the version on the Ya-Ya's expanded edition and for sentimental reasons the 1981 tour. Under My Thumb is the first song I ever saw them perform.

Speaking of live performances, the '81 versions are nice replicas, but do not have (as Iggy Pop said) the audacity of the '69 versions. It took a couple of weeks to develop the song and the MSG (deluxe) Ya-Ya's version is wonderful and features some of my favorite Keith playing. The medley into I'm Free with Taylor's sweet little solo is an added bonus.

My favorite version is the studio version.

Under my Thumb is a terribly underrated song. On of their best. Great groove and vibe,

I like the 81 versions. Love the guitars in that arrangement.

Not forgetting that superb pulsating bass line

Absolutely ;^)

...because that's what lets the meshing guitars stay so elastic & loose.

'81: guitars, guitars, guitars ... and brilliant piano work by Stew.

East Rutherford 1981. I like the studio version, the 66 and 69 versions as well.

'81 for me.
Its a shame the overtly sexist and misogynist lyrics kinda kill this song in the modern day. I used to perform it in my acoustic set in bars and coffee house type gigs but started to get too much grief about the words to continue. Shame.

Tough one!!!

Besides the studio version, Altamont stands out.

If we forget the stunning original studio version, I think it needs to be the one in STILL LIFE. It kinda gave a new life and meaning to the song, majestically opening the shows in that tour. Especially important for me back then; that guitar jungle in the beginning is simply irrestible, and Jagger's "matured" voice is giving it a different feel. And we sure cannot forget misters Watts and Wyman.

But this is not to say that 1966 and 1969 versions weren't any lesser. The energetic version in GOT LIVE! (the original in vinyl, not the CD one, which is slower at tempo) and the groovie YA'YA's one... Nice to have all incarnations officially available of this wonderful tune. There is a thread about one definitive Stones song... It is not "Under My Thumb", but I think listen all these different versions of this song, gives a damn good picture what kind of band the Rolling Stones is (in all its incarnations). A key song.

For all of us who entered the "Stones tour-planet" during the 81/82 tour,
the "Under my thumb" opener was the step into a new dimension:
Beeing addicted for the rest of your life.
An try to see them as often as you can on the rest of the 81/82-tour and
all tours which came after that.
It was the kick off of the "new" Stones:

Stadiums through the world
Big stage design, big effects
Gathering 3 Generations of Fans during the gigs.
Integrating Sponsorship (TDK in Europe for instance) into the Tours.

The 81/82 tour was the layout for all the following tours.
(Nobody would have guessed so many would follow :-)))

And "Under My Thumb" was the fanfare of that new step.
