Rare Version of "Hot Rocks" album?
Posted by: Roscoe ()
Date: August 15, 2013 23:55

I think this has been discussed before but I'm not having much luck finding the thread. How does one identify the rare version of the Hot Rocks double album? Isn't by the matrix numbers and if so, what are they? Thanks.

Ask Shelly.

Oh you're mean.

On side 4, in addition to the tracks Wild Horses and Brown Sugar being different actual cuts, in the run out groove it says 'Shelly' or 'Shelley' and also the date 11/18/1971 (I believe that's what it says anyway).

My copy's hermetically sealed, or at least I can't be bothered to take it down from the shelf.

Didn't some of the original copies contain alternate versions of a couple songs? I'm thinking Street Fighting Man and perhaps Wild Horses?

Wild Horses and Brown Sugar, apparently. The latter is the rendition that features Eric Clapton on slide guitar.

It's not the Clapton version. It's more like the version that's in the Gimme Shelter movie.

Thanks, tatters. I think my memories are a little muddled. Aside from the snippet from the Gimme Shelter movie, I hadn't heard this version of Brown Sugar. Same goes foe Wild Horses. This is a new to me, too.

Come on, get it down and take a picture for us. Show us the rare.

Not sure my camera will get down and take that kind of macro closeup

I've got a sealed version of Hot Rocks with the black sticker across the whole front and a gold promo stamp on the front as well. Love to open that but who am I to open something that's been sealed for 40 years?

How much more is it worth unopened?

I've no idea but I'm sure a king's ransom.

The problem is that there's no way to know for sure until you've actually opened it, thereby spoiling the 'sealed' nature of the album.

Would anyone by chance happen to have, or know where to find, complete copies of these rare recordings in an MP3 format, please? Thanks so much!

You do, Carnaby? Would you please be so kind as to e-mail me such copies? I'd love to add them to my collection, and I'll be more than happy to send anything I may have in return that you may desire.

Thanks again and cheers!
