Put up my review of Paul's new album for The Arts Desk. There's a lot on the album, maybe a bit too much, but a lot of richness and pleasure in it too....

Quite a nice album, Andrew Watt still squeezes the best out of all those oldies he works with.

Unfortunately the new album doesn't strike me as very good. Only played it once but in my opinion it's too quiet and whimsical, needs more diversity and rocking.

Very good album. Maybe McCartney III sounded more profound, but on this one there are a few instant classics (As You Lie There, Days We Left Behind, for instance)

Feel like that's been most of his albums since Wings Of America. There's usually a gem or two in there, and some get reevaluated like Flaming Pie, but most of them are one and dones.

As much I love the Beatles - and in a way, they are the most important group to me - I have never been entirely sold on their solo output. Yes, I own - and like - a couple of Lennon’s albums; and I do enjoy bits of All Things Must Pass, and McCartney’s Wingspan compilation, but the enthusiasm was never there; even when I was in the midst of my Beatles obsession during my late-teens. I just feel that they were so much better songwriters as a collective. I do know very well that Lennon and McCartney did write individually during the Beatles years; yet the binding of the group and collaborative nature inspired them to a greatness never reached post breakup.

The whole was greater than the sum of the parts.

Arguably the same is true of the original Rolling Stones line up.

The Beatles were always greater than the sum of its parts. There may be some of their solo albums that rivaled Beatles albums, but not over a similar span of time. Chalk that up to probably a number of different factors: they were younger and more inspired, they had the proper push from 4 equal members, they had used up all of their best ideas by the time of the solo albums.

Whatever the case, it was a different animal when they went solo. All Things Must Pass is brilliant, but its the result of having a backlog of rejected songs over the span of many years. Much as I love George, he never made an album that ever touched that brilliance again, and it lent some credence to John and Paul limiting him. John and Paul were freaks of creativity, and George probably couldn't keep up if he needed 6 new songs every album like they were expected.

Paul's output was always hit or miss. McCartney is an interesting collection of mostly throwaway tunes, Maybe I'm Amazed being the standout one that honestly doesn't fit. Its a fully fleshed out all timer tune on an album made up of other stuff like Hot As Sun. I like that album, and tunes like Every Night and Junk were also solid, but they weren't Maybe I'm Amazed. I love the album Ram, but I wouldn't really argue it equals a Beatles record. I feel its more appreciated for its quirkiness more than its argued a cohesive effort. Band On The Run is really the only album you get that's considered a masterpiece, and while its fantastic even that has some clunkers to me (Picasso Drink To Me). Wings Over America represents a fantastic collection of largely solo tunes, and it took 5 years to pull that together. For most, that's normal. When the Beatles is your legacy, it seemed awfully slow, and I'd argue not many tunes were added to that worthwhile set over the next 50 years.

To me, John had far and away the most consistent solo effort, with the first two albums being flat out perfect. Those were as good as Beatles records to me, and even the stuff afterwards I've really come to appreciate. Mind Games is nothing unremarkable (even though the title track could be argued as another Maybe I'm Amazed against the album as a whole), Sometime In NYC is the best thing Yoko ever participated in and a really solid effort from both of them, and Walls And Bridges holds together quite nicely. Even his oldies collection of Rock N Roll is worth revisiting frequently. IMO the 7 songs he contributes to Double Fantasy are brilliant after such a long hiatus, with at least 3 or 4 being straight up solo classics for him. How long he could have continued we'll sadly never know, but its the best argument that he was truly the heart and soul of The Beatles for me. He was clearly writing quality tunes post break up, and either had a major hand in adapting Paul's or Paul was just writing better songs from 64-70.

Again, not a knock to Paul. He has an undeniable way with a tune, and has maintained a career that would be the envy of any artist, and rightly deserved. But his solo work will always be overshadowed, in a way that I've always felt John's solo work to be undervalued. Even though they were never better than when they worked together. And lastly, it would be unfair not say the Ringo album from 73 or so deserves its mention as also one of the best solo efforts, courtesy of literally everyone who helped him there lol.

Nice one RollingFreak. I agree with you all the way. On the subject of George solo I do like his last one very much, though not on the level of All Things Must Pass. That and Plastic Ono Band and Band On The Run were stellar. To think John had such a small output compared to Paul he still has better work than Paul in my opinion. I wish Paul would let other musicians in the studio it might be helpful. Anyhow I'm happy he's still around.

Paul is great at issuing good singles.

But, I remember when Flaming Pie was put out it was received as a great album as a whole.

From the interview:

Marking his second appearance on a Stones record in the last few years after featuring on ‘Hackney Diamonds‘, McCartney told us it was “really exciting”, because he didn’t normally play “as a session guy”.

“It was really nice to just show up at a studio with your bass and just say, ‘Right, where do you want me?” he said. “You start playing, and they show you the song, and I start thinking, ‘I’m playing with the Stones!’

“And I’m well chuffed! You could be a bit blasé and go, ‘Yeah, OK, so what?’ But for me, it wasn’t – it went the other way,” he said, going on to recall how he felt in the studio.

“It was like, ‘Wow, there’s Mick [Jagger]! Ooh, there’s Keith [Richards]! Woah, there’s Ronnie [Wood]!’ It was exciting. It was really good. A great thing is all I had to do was play bass and not make mistakes, so it was good.”

He said another highlight was being able to watch Richards work out the structure of the song, which on the new album, is called ‘Covered In You’. “I could hear Keith as we did various takes, working his lick out that ended up on the album, and Ronnie working his solo out, Mick working the vocal out,” he recalled.

“So yeah, I went home that day, and I’m saying to everyone, ‘I just played with The Stones!’ I was glad I wasn’t blasé about it. It’s really exciting. Not everyone plays with The Stones!”

I like the first 8-9 tracks, then it fizzles out. That song Life can be Hard. Hideous tweet rubbish I think. Vaudevillian nonsense ala Yellow submarine to my ears.

Paul McCartney and Mick Jagger recall the story of how Paul gave The Rolling Stones “I Wanna Be Your Man”

Early in the interview Paul talks about how he & Ringo have very different recollections of when they met Elvis. This is another example of how memories change over the year.

The story he tells in this interview is an embellishment of the version he's been telling in concert for the last few tours.

To set a context, whatever happened it was in September 1963 and by that time in the UK The Beatles were immeasurably popular. Beatlemania was surging. So the very concept of Paul McCartney and John Lennon casually strolling down a street in London - Bond St or Denmark St - and getting away with it without being mobbed is, frankly, implausible.

Far more plausible is Wyman's version. Remember, he kept a daily diary, so accounts of events that he gave in 'Stone Alone' can be assumed to be more reliable than an 80yr old's memories.

Wyman's account - which is confirmed by other writings in the parallel universe of The Beatles - has John & Paul at a 1963 Variety Club awards lunch at The Savoy Hotel (very very posh) hotel in London on 10th September. They spotted Andrew Oldham from their taxi home. They would have known Andrew because earlier he had worked for Brian Epstein, so The Fabs knew him. They chatted and Andrew dragged Paul & John to where the Stones were rehearsing in Studio 51. (Studio 51 (also known as the Ken Colyer Club or The 51 Club) was located at 10 Great Newport Street in London’s Soho district.

So Paul's increasingly embellished accounts - the bit about Lennon/McCartney/Jagger/Richards all being in a taxi has been added to the account recently - are arguably plain wrong.

The Variety Club lunch was on 10th September, and (Paul's correct about this bit) The Beatles recorded 'I Wanna Be Your Man' on September 11th. The Rolling Stones recorded it on 7th October 1963.

The Beatles version was released in the UK on Friday 22nd November 1963 (yes, THAT day) and The Rolling Stones version was released on 1st November 1963.

By some total fluke, I scored a ticket in this morning's sale for what is dubbed as Paul's Special Conversation Event next week at the Roundhouse in London. Yay!!

Did anyone else on here get equally lucky?

Nice one Beast. I tried and found the DICE app was not particularly user friendly. I am on a 'waiting list' which I am not expecting to confirm!

McCartney’s new record entered the U.K. album chart at #1. It’s his 24th number one album between The Beatles, Wings and his solo work. Not bad for an 83 year old guy.
