Okay, I'm going to try and review Egypt Station, as a long time of Paul McCartney's solo stuff.
I don't automatically hate on an album because there are some songs I don't like. I used to make lots of mix tapes, so I still think of going through an album and choosing songs that I would want to hear again and leaving off the ones that I wouldn't. It's as simple as that.
So, how many keepers does Egypt Station have, in my little Book O' Music?
First, I have to say I'm glad I followed my instinct and waited until I got the Target version with two extra songs, because one of them is my favorite song on the record!
1. Opening Station - Not really a song, just a little bookend.
2. I Don't Know - Not really a bad song, but not my thing. It might grow on me with time, but my first instinct is to say no to this one.
3. Come On To Me - I'm not really that crazy about it, but suppose it's okay enough for a second listen. I do like the horn riff. Yes.
4. Happy With You - No. I can comfortably say I don't like this song at all.
5. Who Cares - I kind of like the music, but the lyrics are so on the nose it makes the song embarrassing. Sorry to say that I would leave this off any mixtape.
6. Fuh You - It's just like Paul McCartney to follow a terrible song with a great one! I really like this one, and think it's a clear highlight of the whole record. It sounds very modern and mellow and supergroovy. In a way, it's a little masterpiece. Paul took the F*** You concept away from Harry Nilsson and CeeLo Green who used it as a negative, and turned it into a romantic song. This is, imho, a really good song. Big keeper, baby!
7. Confidante - I didn't really like the sound of this at first since I automatically long for the grungy funky rockers, but hearing it again I really like where the lyrics go on this one, and the music and sincerity eventually won me over a minute into it. Yes.
8. People Want Peace - I think this is the kind of stuff people don't like about McCartney's music. I would take a pass on this one. No.
9. Hand In Hand - I guess this is the Chaos and Creation In The Backyard callback song. It's okay enough if you look at it in that way, but this is not the type of music I would feel the need to return to, so I vote no.
10. Dominoes - Kinda split on this one. I'm not really a fan. No.
11. Back In Brazil - I really like this one, but I suppose I could understand why others wouldn't. It's more off the wall than the other stuff here. But to me it's quite enjoyable and reminds me of '80's McCartney. Yes.
12. Do It Now - No. I hunger for rocking!
13. Caesar Rock - Oh yeah. I like this one a lot. A rock song that feels fresh and different.
14. Despite Repeated Warnings - Wow. An anti-Trump song. And perfectly timed with the news. But does the reality hang over the song like a ghost and make it unpleasant on some level? Maybe if I think of it as a reworked Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey, it would relieve me from having the song remind me of Trump. It's musically complex and I like the way the music changes. Yes for me.
15 Station II - Another interlude that bookends the travel portion of the album. Now we reach Egypt Station.
16. Hunt You Down/Naked/C Link - Yeah, this is the kind of rock that I like. It almost doesn't sound like Paul McCartney at all for some reason. Another multi-level medley that really hits the sweet spot where the music doesn't feel like it has anything to prove. I think his voice sounds good here, too.
17. Get Started - No. I like the rockin' ending, but not enough to listen to the whole song. It just sounds pretty weak. Nothing inspired in the songwriting, so this one is a letdown that I wouldn't miss too much.
19. Nothing For Free - Again McCartney follows a sucko song with a winner. He's so weird that way. This one really is my favorite off the whole record. McCartney is back with some sick electronic beats. It sounds modern and different and that refrain is INSANELY CATCHY. To me, this track just swings and rocks and spills its excellence all over the floor. This is a bonus track and not the first single? Shows you what I know about the music business.
Final score: 8 keepers out of 16 songs. I guess that's a 50% rating, not great, but for me it would make a very nice 8 song album that I could really enjoy again and again.
Thanks for reading this!
