2020
Paul McCartney 33,079

2019
Rod Stewart 47,495

2018
The Greatest Showman 61,328

2017
Eminem 131,622
Bonus: #10 album on the chart was Noel Gallagher with 36,692

2016
Michael Ball & Alfie Boe 109,708

The collapse of album sales in the past 4-5 years is impressive to see, one can only guess how low sales can fall in 3-4 years.

‘McCartney III’ Becomes Paul McCartney’s First UK Solo No.1 Album For 31 Years

The achievement, confirmed on Christmas Day afternoon, follows the widespread critical praise lavished on his 18th solo studio release.

Paul McCartney has achieved his first solo UK No.1 album for more than 30 years with McCartney III. The achievement, confirmed on Christmas Day afternoon, follows the widespread critical praise lavished on his 18th solo studio release, which he recorded entirely on his own during lockdown. The new set got off to an impressive start last Friday and over the weekend, selling 25,000 combined units, according to the Official Charts Company. Commented McCartney: “I just want to say Happy Christmas, Happy New Year, and a big thank you to everyone who helped get my record to No.1 in the album charts.” The album is the notional follow-up to the former Beatle’s previous two self-made albums, his first solo set McCartney, from 1970, and 1980’s McCartney II. The first LP spent its first three weeks on the UK chart at No.2, but was held off the top by Simon & Garfunkel’s Bridge Over Troubled Water. The second album debuted at No.1, unseating The Magic of Boney M, and had a two-week run.

McCartney III is Paul’s first solo No.1 album in his home country since Flowers In The Dirt climbed to the top in its second chart week in June 1989. He last had a Christmas No.1 album in 2000, when The Beatles’ blockbuster compilation 1 held sway. The Beatles had the festive bestseller on the British LP rankings six times in the 1960s. McCartney’s first solo UK No.1 album was Ram, credited to Paul and his wife Linda. It spent its first two weeks at the top in June 1971. Band On The Run, with Wings, repeated the feat, seven months after its debut, with a seven-week reign in the summer of 1974. McCartney II had its first two weeks at No.1 in 1980, as did Tug Of War in 1982. Give My Regards To Broad Street had a week there in 1984, before Flowers In The Dirt’s one week in 1989.

The new release thus toppled Taylor Swift’s Evermore, which fell to No.2, in a Top 5 also featuring strong sales for Michael Ball and Alfie Boe’s Together at Christmas, Classic Diamonds by Neil Diamond and the London Symphony Orchestra and Gary Barlow’s Music Played By Humans.

Out on 2-Nov-2021: Paul McCartney will release The Lyrics, a new book described as “a self-portrait in 154 songs”. The book will contain lyrics to 154 songs from all stages of his career, which will be arranged alphabetically. Each song lyric will be accompanied by annotations which describes the circumstances in which they were written, the people and places that inspired them, and what he thinks of them now. This text comes from conversations Paul had with Pulitzer Prize-winning author Paul Muldoon over a five-year period - [www.SuperDeluxeEdition.com] .

This might be an improvement for those who weren't too fond of the original versions - from PaulMcCartney.com

Hailed upon its release last year as "vital and comfortable taking new chances” (Rolling Stone) and “cheery, resilient, forever looking forward” (The New Yorker), Paul McCartney’s McCartney III, which topped album charts across the world, is now literally moving into the future in the form of McCartney III Imagined. Personally curated by Paul, McCartney III Imagined features an A-List assortment of friends, fans, and brand new acquaintances, each covering and/or reimagining their favorite McCartney III moments in their own signature styles. The result is a kaleidoscopic reinterpretation of an album Rolling Stone accurately tagged “an inspiration to us all”—one that serves as an extension of the instantly beloved McCartney III while standing on its own as a brilliant and adventurous milestone in the McCartney discography.

Tracklist:

I bought those four or whatever copies of the original one just had to have, and all I can say here is, uh, no.

Spatter vinyl looks kool though.

Still, no.

Just, No.

thanks.

Cool idea, I'll buy it but try and keep my expectations low.

I'm wondering if these covers would bring about any collaborations between the artists involved. I can't imagine Josh Homme interacting with Paul on any level and not at least suggesting the idea.

Already done in the past - have a look e.g. at the Tracklist of The Singles 1971–2006. And then there're plenty of Stones-Cover-versions by other artists ....

I mean an album with remix/covers by modern day music artists of Stones music
A lot of kids are wearing tongue logo shirts but don't know the music of the Stones
Maybe Billie Eilish can bring new life to a song like Satisfaction

Might be interesting to hear Long Tailed Winter Bird (Damon Albarn Remix), Find My Way (feat. Beck), and maybe Lavatory Lil (Josh Homme) , but I have no clue who the rest of the artists are.
Nice of Paul to introduce new artists (to me) by including them in this new McCartney III Imagined, and might be a good opportunity to hear and learn more about Khruangbin and also Phoebe Bridgers. Or maybe not.
Mick included Skepta on one of his versions of either Getta Grip or England Lost, but the only thing I remember is the name Skepta and nothing about the song itself. This new Macca could all be similar to that.

Lol.

When Macca does it it's "nice" and "interesting".
When The Stones or Mick does it, it's trying to stay hip and relevant.

Re: OT: Paul McCartney - "New" album and other Macca stuff

"Might be interesting"...being the key phrase, and "maybe not" being the qualifier.

Of course.
Wasn't implying it was laughingly hypocritical.

I'll rephrase.
When Macca does it it might be "nice" and maybe "interesting".
When The Stones or Mick does it, it's trying to stay hip and relevant.

Waaay less hypocritical now, I can see.

The Stones did a great job with the Alok remix of Ghost Town, though not everyone liked it as much as me. Maybe one of Paul's new remixes will rise above like that?
Thinking the Damon Alabarn remix of Long Tailed Winter Bird could be in the same winning realm as the Alok Ghost Town remix, but in a different way- something stripped down, minimalist, and heavily dub-fueled.
Then again, and as I already said, everything on this new Macca III Imagined might all fall by the wayside in to no-mans land in the same way Mick's Skepta track did.

Meanwhile, still loving this collaborative remix from the Stones with Alok - a true winner imo. thumbs up

That could possibly work pretty well as she's talented and unique, but I imagine it would be even more interesting if the Stones had brand new material for other artists to remix and/or reimagine - similar to what Paul is doing here with Imagined. Release a brand new album of new and original tunes, then a few months later release an entirely different version of the whole album with other artists remixing and/or reimagining.
But first the Stones would have to release an entire album of new and original tunes, and we know how that's been going. Best hope is for another single tune ala Ghost Town, with maybe a radio edit, and possibly a remix....

I've always liked Beck, and he certainly adds something a bit extra and unique to this track giving it a second life - it could possibly even be a hit imo.
And visually it's another cool and creative video from Paul to enjoy. thumbs up

Now waiting on the Long Tailed Winter Bird (Damon Albarn Remix) to surface which could be another winner for Paul.
Will be interesting to see if the new ‘McCartney III Imagined' does as well as the original version did as far as the charts go, would be crazy if he got another #1.
On a related note, also wondering how Ringo's new EP is doing...whatever the case, at 80 it's great to see him still active and in the public eye.

The song is like the worst dentist office/elevator music I've ever heard.
Beck has always sucked, disappointing collaboration imo. Hope Macca's legacy isn't further tarnished by cr@p like this.

Never met a Beck fan, do they even exist?
Does Macca think this keeps him relevant?
So many questions on this.
