I love Macca's live shows. The last time I saw him, at Rock Werchter last year, I was front row dead centre - a fantastic experience despite the notoriously high stage (I couldn't see his drummer!)

He typically plays 2 hours 45 minutes, never leaving the stage throughout and playing at least one musical instrument whilst singing at all times. He apparently has this thing about not drinking water on stage (Mick gulps it down by the litre!) when he really should for his own good. It cannot help his voice, which has weakened a lot. His instrumental ability, however, remains and of course he has that top dollar backing band to support him, which has had no changes in 15 years. His band are such good musicians that the sound is almost too clinically clean and perfect, something I love the Stones for not being. His sets typically contain around 25 Beatles songs out of 40 total, with the rest being Wings and Solo stuff. Band on the Run usually gets 3 or 4 songs played.

To use a travel analogy, to me the Stones are like travelling at high speed in a sports car on a race track, an edge-of-the-seat white knuckle ride but carrying a risk of it crashing at any time, which it occasionally does. To me that makes them exciting. Macca's band are like travelling in a high speed train - pleasant, fast, smooth and assured and you always know what you're going to get. He has a tremendous career of work to draw on. When I was at Paris Bercy last year, the crowd started singing Lennon's 'Give Peace a Chance' and Macca's band started playing it, in a rare bit of spontaneity.

His telling of the same anecdotes between songs every night for years on end without fail does get rather wearing though, if you've seen a few shows as I have.

Macca tends to tour North & South America + Japan where his shows sell out very quickly.

He hasn't done the UK since May 2015 and only did a month in Europe late May-late June 2016 before returning to the US. He hasn't played in Europe since then.

To me, though the Beatles and Stones were rivals, it needn't be an either/or. I just think it's fantastic that we have/had them both to celebrate and enjoy.

I loved the Gabriel Genesis era, as well as most of his solo stuff... including many of his '80's hits! I saw him several years ago at the Santa Barbara Bowl for the Back to Front tour where he played the whole SO album with the original band, along with some other classic selections from his solo catalogue. Have to say it was a stunning show, and one of the best I've seen in recent memory. Solsbury Hill, Red Rain, and In Your Eyes were worth the price of admission alone.

The only time I saw Peter was at The Forum in June 1986 for the Amnesty International concert. On a bill with U2, Sting, Lou Reed, Bryan Adams, and Tom Petty & Bob Dylan (surprise guests), he was the highlight of the show (and they were all pretty good, too!) "So" had just come out a couple of weeks earlier and he opened with "Red Rain" - it was an incredible performance.

Never liked Gabriel solo but loved him with Genesis (aside from Trick Of The Tale, I didn't like them without him either). One of the few reunions I really really really wished would happen and never did besides a one off once in the early 80s. Would kill to see them, although I guess Gabriel probably would have been different (and maybe thats what he was afraid of), but loved their music.

Four hours is too long.
But the Ramones could have given you 40 songs and got you out of there in an hour!

I like how some 70's/80s bands tour together these days. Saw Def Lep/Poison and Tesla recently. Tesla played 40 minutes, Poison 1 hour and Def Lep 1.5 hours. Greatest hits plus a new song or two thrown in. Perfect length of time for each band.

seventy or so minutes Stones '72 MSG: perfect. Everyone emptied the tank; it was no foolin' around from the first whistle. lovely night. the best; dont wish for another minute, or song. Fulfilled and righteous and perfect.

Not to say that longer or shorter hasn't made justifiable history, just my experience with my very best rock and roll concert ever;

considering I had a great set of fabulous prime and brilliant Stevie right before; and Steveie reprise last song with Wonderlove and Stones cat just really having fun and going for it; well it seemed like an entire season with good friends going through incredibly passionate ups downs and groovy-sideways along the way. I really think the shine of that night will be with me the last day I breathe in this body.

I'm talking earned glory and NO ONE had a fleeting doubt. NO one.

I adore Bruce but have seen him enough and had a friend beg me to go. I knew I'd enjoy it, but hadn't been in like 4 years. Throughout that night I loved it, but I was shocked everyone else who are not nearly as big of fans as I am kept going with it. I was like "aren't you tired?!" And absolutely at points I was like "jeez Bruce enough, we get it". I'm not gonna complain if he keeps going, but I was definitely shocked and I'm a Bruce veteran so to say. Could have used it being shorter and agree it tested my fandom, but seeing as I hadn't seen him in awhile and won't see him again for awhile I was fine to get the experience and story. But I was more surprised the crowd, and friend I was with who probably knew 5 songs, didn't want to leave. Something captivating about him for sure, and as a big fan I probably would have pulled it at 3 and a half hours at the latest.

Don't get me wrong...I had a great time and at no point did I ever contemplate leaving early, but it just wore me out. Not to mention that I still had a 2-1/2 hour drive back home from Metlife Stadium.

He moved to a new label...Capitol/ UMG I think in the summer so thought there might be some new material out by now.

I have seen a few emotional scenes at McCartney concerts I can tell you! Last year in Paris, I queued all day for a spot up front in Bercy. GA tickets were only 73€ - very cheap and there were lots of youngsters in their teens and early twenties queueing for hours, singing Beatles songs and as excited as kids at Christmas. At the end Of the show a lot of them were in tears.

I saw both McCartney and the Who for the 1st time in 2015 and both times I was kicking myself for seeing neither before. I've now seem Macca 6 times and the Who 4 times. In fact, when I 1st saw Macca in London in 2015, I went to his very next show - in Birmingham 3 days later!

One day Paul McCartney is gonna die.

And we're never gonna believe he was ever alive.

We thought rock and roll was forever. And then David Bowie passed. Glenn Frey. Prince and Tom Petty. You're getting the impression you'd better see your favorite classic act now, because they truly might not be around anymore.

Not that that's the essence.

The essence is the songs. The records. The singers. The players. HOW DID THEY DO THIS?

That's one thing we know for sure, we never could. It's different from being smart, it's different from learning a trade, it seems somehow these people channeled the gods and made concrete creations that not only infected our lives, but changed them.

Like the Beatles.

They were the internet of their day. Remember how you bought a computer just to play on AOL? In '64, everybody rushed out and bought a Beatles album. But the difference is, today you've got no use for that old Packard Bell or Dell, but those sweet sweet tunes sound just as fine.

And rock and roll is all about image.

But when you break that image...

That's right, in this clip Paul McCartney looks old. Nearly frail. It's still him, but he's a grandpa. Hip, but a bit crotchety when it comes to movement. And you're not turned off in the least, you want to will him to go on, to never die, to be here forever, because once he's gone, we're next.

And unlike seemingly everybody else, Paul McCartney won.

Not only is he still here, he's got children and grandchildren, upright citizens. How did that happen? When seemingly everybody else got caught up in drugs, and if they didn't o.d., made a mess of their lives.

And he never got cheesy. And never lost his fame.

That's the amazing thing here, the way the throngs appear, because it's HIM!

Hang out with a teen phenom of yesteryear, most people ignore them. They can shop like normal people, you and me, but not Paul McCartney.

He's led a charmed life. But the stunning thing is it's OUR LIFE!

We know those records by heart. When the assembled multitude starts singing along in the pub, everybody knows the words, young and old.

Kinda like that matron in the barber shop, on Penny Lane. She was young once. She remembers. When the Beatles were playing the Cavern Club, when they were coming up. She doesn't think about it every day, but she's instantly jetted back upon seeing Paul, the same way you are when seeing this clip.

And Corden is nice enough, but he's superfluous, flavor of the moment, Paul is forever, and he's the star.

He's sitting in the Range Rover and exuding a charisma and a complacency all at the same time, how does he do this? And when he starts pointing out landmarks...

Everybody faked a British accent. Liverpool was the most famous city in the world. They're driving around and it's like a kinescope to the past. A link between who you were and now are and forevermore shall be.

Paul actually lived there. Everything in the songs is real.

They go to the house he grew up in, Paul's first time back since he resided there, and...

It's living history. Paul talks about playing "She Loves You" for his dad the same way we talk about our parents. We're living through him, but we could never be him. It's EERIE!

And sure, he's promoting a new album.

And sure, his hair is not completely his natural color.

But it's most definitely him. With no artifice. Enjoying his fame. Still a musician at heart. You can take the boy out of Liverpool, but Liverpool's always in him.

He's richer than almost everybody else. But he's not flaunting it, he's comfortable in his role. You can only kick back and say to yourself you want to be him.

But you can't.

But you can listen to his music. Which he is still making.

But one day he'll be unable to. And he'll become a myth. Like John Lennon. He'll be cast in stone. His three dimensions will fall away. But for now...

He's still walking the earth. The biggest giant of the twentieth century. Bigger than any President, bigger than any astronaut, purveyor of the soundtrack to our victories and our losses. You can see he knows all this, it's there in his eyes.

But he keeps keepin' on, until the very end.

Incredible post that is above. Lefsetz nails it. It really is incredible, moreso than you'd think. We all knew this was coming, yet now that the video is here it seems like the greatest thing ever. Maybe its the times, with so much sadness as Bob says we need a carefree living legend to just lift us up. I've been on the biggest Paul kick this weekend listening to Beatles and his solo stuff and live shows throughout the years. He's never wavered. Its truly incredible. Lefsetz nails it that after all these other musician deaths I think there's an undeniable feeling when we all saw this one that we need to cherish it as much as we can while he's still here.

I still remember 10 years ago Paul was on Letterman. He was performing and I decided not to see the new Shea stadium shows he was doing. I'd never seen him but thought he didn't have it anymore. He went on Letterman's marquee and he blew the roof off the place. I went out and bought tickets instantly. And it was one of the greatest shows I've ever seen. The man is just a god.
