Mick Taylor in Belgium... Mick Taylor thinks: Belgium = Kriek Bellevue.
This means ==> he will be drunk. Guaranteed!

The last time he was here he couldn't even find the input of his guitar. A normal Gibson Les Paul Standard (if I remember well) probably his property for over 30 years.

Right.
But who could blame him, if this is correct
(which we of course do think, as a respected member here posted it);
´cause Belgium is Bierland, Antwerp has more bars than London,
some places have 1500 or more than 2000 beer brands...
- End of tourist add...
I drank the most expensive beer in the world earlier this year, privately imported to a university city in north Sweden, costed me 8£ (or about 15 $ or more than 11Euro) for 33 cl.
That was the West Vleeteren Trappisten Bier, which you must stand in line outside the very monastery to buy.
Who hasnt run beserk in Bruxelles bar quarters, or Kattenberg or at central Bierland or Die Volle Maan...
ref: "In a port of Amsterdam..."(J. Brel, from Belgium).

BowieStone; When was the event you posted about? I hope he didnt drink Lindeman´s Kriek?

'Harelbeke Rock & Blues Festival'. June 26th, 2004.

He played well, but I prefer sober artists on stage. Some professionalism, please.

The sad & complicated circumstances around this,
is that zonked out musicians often make the most interesting songs as well as the best appearances & performances... Take Jim Morrison for instance & his astonishing creativity in 1966-67 in spite of an intake of (in his own words quoted in Danny Sugarman´s No One Here Gets Out Alive) at least 250 lsd-trips a year. The list on interesting characters using drugs & still productive can be made ver long (endless, in fact); I just wanna mention some two-three more: Syd Barret (took anything); Ian Gillan (a heavy boozer); Keith Richards (smack).

With this I certainly NOT want to make propaganda for drugn in musics or during concerts. This would be quite an empty forum if people couldnt accept drugs or booze on stage. Every now & then I read posters here saying the best tour was US 1972 while (and so it went on for most of the 70s) cocaine lines were on Preston´s organ & smack were flowing like snow on christmas day.

Point here is; beware of fundamentalism either or other way.
Drugs dont work; but we cant ban all the ones who cant make it totally without them.

Mick Taylor is in his 50s and seeing an 'old' (sorry lads, 50+ is not old) artist drunk on stage is pathetic.
That's why I'm a huge Jagger fan. Most people laugh with him that he's doing all these fitness things and keeping in shape and that's why he can deliver the goods every night... I admire that. He doesn't have the attitude to act like a rock and roll star... (actually he is a r&r star... he co-invented what a rock & rol star is, so he will always be one)

I wasn't aware of the fact that Mick Taylor has a drinking problem. Must be the fate of a Stones guitarist.

Taylor seemed fine on the Mayall tour in October when I saw him.

Dont agree with this acceptance of musicians being under the influence on stage. At the price of tickets these days, the least you should be able to expect is the people onstage to be coherent enough to play their instruments properly.

Agree Gazza, at today's prices, $150-$325 per seat I expect nothing less than a @#$%& excellent professional show.

WWll, when I saw him with Mayall in LA ('82 I think),
he was on fire. Met him afterwards, gave me his guitar pick.
However, when I opened for him in the mid-90s and seeing him at
a few other shows around here at that time, he seemed nervous,
unsteady, sweating like a pig, and having problems with his equipment.
That happens to us all, but this was just a guitar, maybe one effect,
and an amp. No rack-mount system or anything. This happend on a few
occasions. Maybe it was the band he had, I don't know.
On some numbers, he was amazing. On others, it sounded like a bad jazz band.
He's certainly no band leader (by that I mean being up onstage,
introducing songs, interacting with the audience).
He makes Clapton seem like a carnival barker.

TomK,

I saw Mick Taylor in '81 or '82 at the Roxy Club in L.A. with the John Mayall and Bluesbreakers...a reunion I think they called it, even John McVie was on bass. Was this the same show? I remember John McVie was marching around the stage barefooted, thumping his bass, and his empty beer bottles were all over the place. Dangerous!

Mick Taylor literally ripped and was the highlight of the night...the best guitarist I've seen live...right next to Johnny Winter, Stevie Ray, Robin Trower, Alvin Lee, Jimmy Page, etc.

Simply put, I was blown away by this show and it left an indelible mark on me.

I saw him agin in London 2003, and the song definitely remains the same. While his band wasn't up to par with the Blusebreaker show in '82, he shined as a guitarist and one could only be reminded of the tragic loss the Stones suffered when they decided to fire him. A sad day for the Stones, and a sad, sad, sad day for rock and roll in general.

For those who get the chance to see him live, cherish the experience...there aren't many left like Mick Taylor.

Hairball, indeed we were at the same show.
I saw them twice. I remeber MT wearing a blue baggy suit,
and Mayall wearing short shorts. I think Room to Move was
their first song. Man, did they tear it up. A great night, great performances.
We were both at the LA shows in '81.

Although I probably provoked most of the users here
with my posting above, that was not my intention.
And I have to say we´re all ambivalent; here we´re collecting goods from smack era 1972-75 when Keef (and the others, as well, maybe with the exception of Charlie, and Bill during 1973-75, but nor during 1971 and 72 when he smoked pot); we worship it as Gods gifts to us; we even post pictures of zonked out Stones from that period or just around it. While seeing pics of Keefster with the notorious burnt-down graveyard mouth, we´re thinkin, sayin & postin "Oh, how cool." Havent the time to check out when; but not so many month ago there was a thread here at Tell Me when grown-ups of my age (40, or even older people) thought they were cool because ther had this & that many trips while young.
O, Lord; if I got rich for all my hangovers! For all strange places I have found myself at after a rought night.

I did n o t say it was ok to be drunk on stage!
But this disgust for older musicians (e.g.: ) "Mick Taylor is in his 50s and seeing an 'old' (sorry lads, 50+ is not old) artist drunk on stage is pathetic."(BowieStones, above). The way its put make you suspect BoSton is over 50 himself.

But there are a growing feeling of death fear and agony here at the forum.
It is ok to be drunk/stoned when 20, 25 - but not at 50, 60?
When do you cross the line? At 34, like Keith?
- On one hand: Let´s not be hypocrits.
On the other hand: I would very much like the boys to be sober while playing in my country! Agree!

I also admire Mick Jagger´s health fixation; but he also tends to dwell an uninteresting personality, compared to Mr Richards (IMHO).

No, it's also not ok if you're 25.
But it makes it more pathetic to see someone of Taylors age. It's like they throw their life away and still wanna be the person they were when they were young.

I don't know if he has a drinking problem. I only know he was drunk the night I saw him.

About Jagger: I find him very intresting. I think he has the greatest personality of all the guys in the band. Richards is stuck in the 70s. He still wants to be Mr. Rock & Roll. Jagger moved on.

I have known Mick Taylor in 2001.
He's a good person, humble and timid.
It makes you feel to really ease, not to make to weigh to be a rockstar.
I would like to see to play him in the next tournèè of the Stones.
It would be the most beautiful gift that the Stones could do me (with Charlie that an acoustic version of Lady Jane sings....)

We all know Taylor changed the sound of the stones
and contributed to the success of Sticky Fingers on
his first complete record with the stones. Now as the
current lineup plays on I would say Taylor still has
his swagger and SWAY today and BROWN SUGAR should only
be played if it is Taylor brand and would watch WILD
HORSES if Taylor was at the finish line. BITCH could
be best now described as those actions and how MT
was treated it used to be an high octane
rocker. Someday the lawyers will come and say YOU GOTTA MOVE or say
CYHMK on your door for the royalties. No this is not a
MOONLIGHT MILE away but someday your red roses will
turn to DEAD FLOWERS and you might sing I GOT THE
BLUES To Marian F who after sometime got song credit for
SISTER MORPHINE.
We should always learn from our mistakes and pursue
the remedy to correct the wrong. Taylor has paid big
time

Just Kidding now all Peace

Richards is stuck in rock 'n' roll (and blues, and reggae, and jazz etc), not in the 70´s: What 70´s music is it that he can´t leave (except reggae)? Keefster i s Mr. Rock & Roll (Jr; that is; Chuckster Berry is ditto Sr.). Richards took hmself from under the gutter to to-days seemingly strong rock star: He is a hero in my eyes.

I also find this 'Taylor is lost in alcohol-discussion' exaggerated. Not having seen him myself, many friends have the latest years... Noone said he was drunk on stage.

Of course Jagger compared to most 62 y o:s in the world has a very exciting personality. But Richards has cracks in the facade & soul; and that attracts me more in a human being.

Hairball,

Wonderful to see you talking sense about Saint Mick.

There are boots of those Taylor/Mayall shows.

There is an excellent boot of Taylor's 2003 show, (which I was fortunate enough to attend too). It was a great tonic coming after the somewhat mechanical Astorai gig, (which wasn't bad either!).

BabonnBro,

Taylor does like his beer and often has a pint on hand. Usually this doesn't affect his playing.

Some of my best friends are Windmills.

I saw him in 2003 in Paris, it was a great show in 2 parts.
Great souvenir. He wasn't slim, but I believe he lost some weight compared to 1998.
I have a review of the show with photos on my webpage.
BTW, if there is a recording of this show circulating, I'd be glad to know and find a copy.

Now I see why he become so voluminous over the years! Still, in spite of what I first wrote - a 100 years ago - in this thread, on Belgian beer; I dont actually get why precisely Belgium would be a place to drink for Taylor. Maybe he had bad deals there; so half of the fee would be in a buoyant form. The trappisten bier & other special Belgian beers are very tasty & do not tempt to overconsumption.

Anyway, wish you all Belgian concert-visitors a great night & hope ol´ Mick soon will return to Sweden again (December latest time). /BB

...Maybe Taylor at some point bought his beer from Noddy Holder (ex-Slade)!
(Anyone knows if Noddy still runs his "pob" in Wolverhampton... ?)

Heck, I didn't mean "likes his beer" in a derogatory/unkind way. Most of us like our beer. It's a fine drink - well, the Real stuff which he gets in England (Suffolk?) is!
