That was the end game as far as rock'n'roll. Pre-fab pop eg Monkees, Archies,(fake musicians, cartoonish) "it was a bad scene, man".

"Yummy yummy yummy I got love in my tummy".

Bubblegum is a snob term invented by '60s hippies. There was some very entertaining music made by so-called bubblegum artists. I don't consider the Monkees to be bubblegum, even though they were created to be a manufactured teen idol band. They were talented guys and wound up making their own music. Even before that, they had good songwriting from the best writers of the day, including Nilsson, Neil Diamond, and Goffin/King. As for having studio musicians play on their early records, bands such as the Byrds used some of those same studio musicians on their albums. Those musicians were very well-regarded and influential. Keith Moon was heavily influenced by Hal Blaine.

Well I grew up in that era and the Monkees were a joke among the crowd I hung out with.

Not just groups, but also "one-hit wonders" who might come up with a meaningless but infectious tune that would put a chill down your spine and kick your adrenaline up a notch, as if you'd just slammed down 3 candy bars and 2 (soft-serve) ice cream cones. Always liked this one, now I have a reason to post it. Incredibly "groovy" bass lines on this number. This a bit of soul bubblegum from the singer of Duke of Earl.

As for groups, this 1974 top 5 hit from U.S. band (and Native-American, one of the first such groups) Redbone qualifies I think.

There's a lot more to the Monkees than most people realize.

I think it's funny that hippies hated the Monkees and "bubblegum" music, yet a lot of their "hippie" music was twee and has not held up over time. Does anyone still listen to the Jefferson Airplane or It's A Beautiful Day?

I was a hippie and I didn't hate the Monkees, in fact I saw them in 1967 and it was a great show!

And although I don't spend a whole lot of time listening to classic rock, I often listen to albums like Surrealistic Pillow--how that can be described as twee is beyond me, I have to admit!
