Oh Baby (We Got A Good Thing Goin’)
(Barbara Linda Ozen)

RCA Studios, Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, US, November 2, 1964

Mick Jagger - vocals
Keith Richards - electric guitar
Charlie Watts - drums
Bill Wyman - bass
Brian Jones - electric guitar
Ian Stewart - piano

No matter how much she wants me, I'm not going nowhere
I'm gonna stick right here, babe, you know how much I care
So don't worry 'bout me, baby, 'cause I'm right here at home
Oh baby, oh baby, we got a good thing goin'

You may talk all about me and scandalize my name
But deep down inside me I know I'm the only man
So don't worry 'bout me, baby, 'cause I'm right here at home
Oh baby, oh baby, we got a good thing goin'

So maybe I knew her
Once upon a time
But that's all in the past, babe
Baby, let me know you're mine, all mine, all mine

No matter how much she wants me, I'm not going nowhere
I'm gonna stick right here, babe, I know how much you care
So don't worry 'bout me, baby, 'cause I'm right here at home
Oh baby, oh baby, we got a good thing goin'

Got a good thing goin', babe
We got a good thing goin'
That's what I said
We got a good thing goin'
We got a good one for ourselves
Got a thing goin' for ourselves
We got a pretty good thing goin'

Produced by Andrew Loog Oldham

First released on:
The Rolling Stones - “The Rolling Stones, Now!” LP
(London PS 420) US, February 13, 1965

Not one of my faves on Out Of Our Heads when compared with That's How Strong My Love Is, Good Times and I'm Free but a decent, if uninspired cover.

This is a pretty good one...a bagathuelle like 'Good Times' from 'Out of our Heads'...

What's a bagathuelle when it's at home?

A bagatelle, maybe? As in a trifling thing of little value? But in what language?
In any case, comparing Oh Baby with Good Times resonates with me - both are okay-but-nothing-specials.

A weak cover, ill-suited to the Stones. The original was better.

Love it. Great rhythm guitar, the whole group is playful and just bubbles along. And how about this cool live version. I think I can even hear Stu.

Its a fun tune. Mick sings it well, good playing by the band. What's there not to like? Its very catchy to me and it gets stuck in my head after I hear it.

Rolling Stones,Now! is one omy my fave raves. Charlie and Bill just swing loosey goosey like nothing else. Bill was and is a tremendous bass player.
Down the Road Apiece is one of the best ever. Mona, just the whole frickin' record.

The genius of the Stones, take an okay song and turn it into a great cover. Here's Barbara Lynn:

Thanks Rockman for the original source.

Even though "Oh Baby" is not among their best covers, it still a token from a fascinating period in their career. The original blues-based "rhythm'n'blues" phase was over - a kind of literally and naturally ended in those Chess sessions during their first American tour - and they were looking all the current things happening in American black music, what would mostly put under the umbrella notion of "soul". I guess many of the songs they would record were literally bought from record storres during their first American tours. They were claimed to have collected a helluva amount of records. It was intersting that also the same time - especially 1965, and OUT OF OUR HEADS were being like a central piece - they were starting to write their own original material.

And damn quickly they did record their covers versions. Which I think sounds rather clearly in "Oh Baby" - not much room to find any original angles, but just their natural fresh charm. But it has its justifed place in UK OUT OF OUR HEADS album to give the certain flavor of it; a suitable filler.

I'm not sure, but I think this is the video from the Hollywood a Go-Go TV Show, recorded in May 15, 1965 and aired May 22, 1965.

Nice, both versions have a nice flow to them. Nothing too heavy or twee, just a good loose feel. cool smiley

A so-so effort. It chugs along nicely enough I suppose.
