OT: bearded rock rebels

OK, not all of them are rock musicians, but here's an interesting, fun article about how beards and musical nonconformity go hand in hand. Any hirsute IORRian's want to chime in?

Jim Morrison round about LA Woman era: my favourite Doors album.

Kris Kristofferson had a beard almost throughout the 70s, and he was the biggest non-comformist to hit country music, more so than Waylon.

Richard Thompson only wore a turban on Pour Down Like Silver, and it wasn't the beard that made him ditch Linda, but rather the fact that he met another woman on the Small Town Romance tour of 1981.

I always thought that Mick and Brian looked pretty good in their bearded phase. Don't recall ever seeing Keith or the other Stones with a full beard.

It seemed to be a thing with guys in the 70's, but was passe be the end of the decade. I remember many of my guy friends having a beard and even my conservative father sported a goatee for a while. It seems to be gaining popularity again now. But in a much more styled incarnation.

i still think waylon was the bigger nashville rebel. kris was off doing things indie style while waylon was fighting with the major labels he was signed to

lets not forget willie nelsons beard

Charlie had one during Dirty Work era, plus mustache on Got Live If You Want It cover. And the biggest beard Mick had was around '80.

A generalization: US rockers have beards; British rockers do not.

I always felt that beards and rock'n roll STAR are absolutely worlds apart. Stones knew that. Jagger never seriously had a beard. He did it in off-season while cameras were scarce.
But beards get food caught, beer dripping, smoke stained - nothing for a skinny androgynous rockstar.

Jimmy Fallon interview by Mick Jagger
Interview, May, 2002 by Mick Jagger

MJ: Yup. Now, I didn't know that you were in Almost Famous. What part did you play?

JF: Oh, man! I play the band's second manager. Actually, I had a line where I said, "You think Mick Jagger's going to be out there trying to be a rock star--"

MJ: "--when he's 50?" [both laugh] I've got it now!

JF: Yeah, I had a full-on beard, too. It was my first beard ever. Have you ever grown one?

MJ: I used to have a long, sort of Russian-type beard. I don't remember what year it was. I think it was the end of the '70s, or the beginning of the '80s. It was quite distinguished, but it was really hard to keep clean.

JF: It's the worst thing ever! When I first started growing it, it was patchy and weird looking. People with real beards would look at me and say, "Nice try." And then you have to trim around your lips and everything. It was just silly, you know? It was hard to even drink--whatever you drink gets soaked up in your mustache.

MJ: And whatever you eat. You have to clean it all the time--what a pain in the neck. But some people like it. Did you find that girls liked it?

JF: You know, I think they did. Maybe I'll grow that thing back. [laughs] I'm from upstate New York, and this one guy I know grows a beard every winter. His wife says, "Oh, John's growing his beard--it's winter." [laughs] It's like, come on, can't he just wear a sweater? I mean, this isn't the mountain times, where you need it to be warm. Wear a scarf!

MJ: The hibernation look.

JF: Exactly. You're a human, you're not a bear! [both laugh]

Did you find that girls liked it? - it seems all Mick cares about and he's almost 60 in 2002

These days former 13th Floor Elevators singer Roky Erickson is sporting a full beard....

....and in younger years he did for a time resemble the bearded heavier Jim Morrison with even darker songs and lyrics....

....though Rocky is less a rock rebel than one who is just genuinely way out there....

....but he seems to like it just fine and has found some personal contentment and further artistic success in later years.

If we're just listing musicians with a bread, I'll add Seasick Steve:
