there are only 3
beatles
stones
led zep
no one else is close.
and each of the 3 are different enough that it's silly to compare in any competitive way.
my 2 cents.
but why limit it to just bands?
jimi hendrix and chuck berry belong alongside these guys.

Yes, it's easier to name 3 than 5, these three are so obvious.

LateBloomer, you started my LA morning in a GREAT way! MANY thanks.
I was at the taping of this NBC true "special."
This photo reminds me of how very happy Elvis was playing with his pals.
Like to remember him this way instead of those last sad days.

there is never a time i thought dio sounded or tried to sound like ian gillan. dio's voice was pretty much intact on his first widely available single released in the early 60's. you think dio knew who gillan was more than 5 years before gillan joined deep purple?

I'm not familiar with Dio's early releases, and I wasn't putting him down with my comment. I was merely saying that Man On The Silver Mountain sounds like a Deep Purple song, rather than the Rainbow I first heard (Since You Been Gone, Stone Cold, etc.), when they had (first Graham Bonnet and then) Joe Lynn Turner as a singer and were attempting to have "hits" so they could "pay the bills".
