Let's Spend The Night Together movie

Watched this one this past weekend and enjoyed it. I grew up in NJ (and went to one of the Meadowlands shows in '81) and now live in AZ so enjoyed the filming locations.

Some thoughts on the movie:

- The outdoor stage set which seemed so exotic in '81 looked downright quaint. Just a little ramp down from the drum riser. No video screens, special effects, blow up dolls etc.

- Made me realize how much I miss Keith and Ronnie's backing vocals. Just added so much to LSTNT, Imagination, JJ Flash,HTW etc. To me, that's when the Stones really sound best.

- Funny seeing young Marlon in the one scene during Neighbors that Ronnie shows up late. He was almost like a head roadie at, what, 14?

- Is that scene compeletely fabricated? I recall hearing that the Stones were on the verge of replacing Woody w opening act George Thorogood but not sure how much was for teh cameras and how much real.

- Mick is great and full of energy but, in retrospect, seems pretty coked up.

- Sun Devil Stadium shows really well in the outdoor portion.

- Keith was just so powerful. Made me nostalgic. As much as now, it's totally Mick's show, in '81 Keith is clearly calling all of the shots musically. His playing and singing are great and he prowls the stage like a cool Panther.

- Keith's playing style seems more, for lack of a better word, "physical" than I recalled. Lots of bends on his leads, especially in the opening Under My Thumb.

- Man I miss Ian Stewart. Just brought a smile to my face seeing his mug behind the keys. I also think Mac did some Yeoman work on that tour.

Never cared much for this one, except for Time Is On My Side. Remember dozing off watching it in a theater at the time. Having a acquired a DVD of Hampton '81, the reality is that the pay per view TV special was much better than LSTNT. That tour, and the subsequent '82 Euro Tour, was notable for a return to power for Keith's playing. It was like he was trying to regain ground he lost during the junkie tours. He never quite got all the way back, but he made a valiant effort. Then, just as he had regained form, the band took a 7-year stage hiatus. His playing did continue to improve, right through No Security.

Yes, it's really a shame that just after 82 the band took 7-year brake, they really should have toured 84-85, it could have been really, really great. Keith was very strong at that time.

Yes, the sound and the mix is much better (more raw and real) on the DVD of Hampton, I also really wish they would release the DVD of Live at Leeds 82, it's no available officially or unofficially, the music is available in stones archives and a few clips are officially available in YouTube and the video quality of those official clips is outstanding.

I never much liked Mick's singing on this video. That was the only thing that killed it for me. There seemed to be little to no melody. He wasn't singing near as good as he could.
Keith was great though. I think Leed's is much better.

there were 3 or 4 tours where mick didn't take singing seriously. it was more a show than a performance of a song for him. that changed in 89 and he hasn't looked back. we're left to wonder how much better then 72/72, 78, and 81 tours could have been if he put as much effort into his singing then as he does now.

Have you not seen the Live in Texas film from the '78 tour? Keith's playing was incendiary. And personally I think his playing on the '89/ '90 tours was every bit as fantastic - if not better than 81/82. It just may have been drowned quite a bit by all the additional musicians and pyrotechnics.

"Mick Jagger & the Rollling Stones" on the scoreboard was not a good thing. I saw 2 shows on the tour. They were pretty good but not as good as 1978.

Yes, that has always been really odd to me, how on earth did Keith accept that???
(or other band members as well)

Actually, had they not taken the break and continued then, the likelihood is that they would have broken up long ago and we would not have had all those great tours after the "reunion."

They had sporadic good nights on the '78 tour. That particular concert appears to be an anomaly, not the rule. Keith was just beginning to dry out.

Yeah, but knowing how they sounded after Wyman left, I'd have taken at least one more real Rolling Stones tour in the mid-80s. Although I have enjoyed them in concert since 1989, the only great tour was No Security. In fact I consider Steel Wheels to be their final album. Others followed but they've been insignificant.

your comments on the 78 tour are accurate. In fact, the vibe that summer was how it was overshadowed by the Springsteen tour, how underwhelming some of the outdoor shows were and there was a big thing in Rolling Stone over the coverage, involving Mick and his friend Wenner. the few theater shows were the exception

Never noticed that before. Is he in the dressing room when Ronnie is being made up?

It's when Ronnie first staggers in and Mick is gesturing to his watch that he's late. Marlon is in the scene briefly but pretty clearly telling Woody where he needs to go next.

If you look at Mick, the close-ups in those opening numbers, Mick's eyes do tell of that "backstage preshow switchblade glaze".

In 1981 it's still only rock n roll for the band as well as the audience--check out clips of the audience when viewed from the back of Charlie's drum riser, a sea of bearded, scruffy, dark-haired roughnecks. It looks like Altamont out there, minus the hippies, a reminder that the danger surrounding the band's glory days is still in plain view behind them, and it's a long way to go to arrive at the front-of-stage cell-phone-wielding corporate picnic of the present-day shows.

People keep criticizing the speed of the music in the film. Perhaps they sped it up? I seem to remember back in the day from the live album and clips that Jagger's voice sounded less like that of a singer, more winded and flat and even low and hoarse from all the running around, and perhaps they sped the tape up to make it sound more like Mick was singing. On the DVD his voice sounds higher and more in tune than I remember hearing from these shows at the time.

Love the clip (night shot) when all of a sudden Ronnie points his guitar in front of him like a combat rifle and does a full-tilt sprint around the ramp past stage left, leaving Keith befuddled as he stops playing to turn and look at him disappear behind the wall at stage left, only to reappear moments later at stage right to reclaim his place onstage.

Love this movie.

Together with hearing Start Me Up, I must have rented and watched this film 100 times back in the very early 80s.

I never ever thought I would be lucky enough in those days to catch them live.

Luckily, I was very very wrong!

hal ashby did a very good job with the movie . my only gripe is the songs were cut and shortened.which sucks ,so you could have the movie clock in at 90 minnutes instead of 2and a half hours like the shows did .does anyone know when the stones are gonna put the offical hampton dvd out?

Yes, the shortening pisses me off as well very much, I personally like the speed and the energy though, I hate when during going to a go-go , they don't show the actual show because it was certainly one of the highlights of 81/82 tours, at first I didn't like that song very much but later it has become one of my all time Stones favorites even if it's not their original song.

They should really put out official dvd of Hampton 81 or Live at Leeds 82, that I would like even better.

Also official dvd of Tour of the Americas 75 would be great.

Ditto that .

And at the risk of appearing petty...Mick's silly football trousers don't help this tour to stand the test of time.

[I remember going to see LSTNT at my local cinema in the afternoon and I was the only person in the house ! I later remember paying about £50 to special order the bloody VHS release because nobody was stocking it ! ]
