Those two chords.

It sounds like C followed by C# to me.

What did he do again?

It also sounds like some kind of autotune was on but off.

Keith wouldn't use that would he?

Keith is still playing it wrong second time round and then it slips right mid-chord and an upper register chord sound comes in. He doesn't look like he suddenly realised.

I think either Ronnie or Chuck saved the day.

Fascinating.

To me anyway.

Keith and wrong chords is an old story as we all know.

JJF on LYL for a start.

First things first, are you wearing a scarf?

And secondly have you ever found that confounding bridge?
or are you still planning on crossing it when you come to it, with no practice?

i don't play guitar well
i've been able to play start me up for a while though
i find it really hard to believe that he screwed this up twice
it's his signature chord change and very simple
i find it very mysterious

I'm not buying the scarf theory.

I'm also not buying the scarf.. way too expensive.

I'm not sure about the two fingers over one onto the "G" and "G" string. You would get one C# and a D but it sounds like the whole C# chord to me.

I keep playing it.

It's got to me.

I want to get inside Keith's head.

Yeah I can't figure it either. I Don't buy that it was a scarf or old age.

Don't over think it.......2 major chords. Two identical augmentations, C/F; Flat/Eflat nothing tricky at all until the chorus/bridge. Same add one he does in every f-ing song........maybe HE over thought it?

If I play C major then C# major it sounds like what Keith did.

I think he just slid the one finger up a fret.

Which would be an interesting choice.

IF that's it......maybe he was thinking, "slide up B to C, into, the C lick", without a guitar in hand, a B slide to C, would give you a slight walk up reggae feel, which the first 40 takes were. MAYBE he was trying to add that element, and accidentally started in the actual correct spot, and walked up out.

This is an unlikely excuse, but it would make sense, because getting lost, augmenting something you already have down, is an easy mistake.

If true it would have been intentional. Can't say I liked the sound of it. My guitars in storage so I can't try it myself.

True, but had he done it a half step down, it may have been reasonable, not that it would work.......

I think you've all got it horribly wrong. Those two chords should be embraced and celebrated for they are the beginning of a bright new live avant-garde revision of the Stones' classic years.

All is not what it seems. This is a jazz aesthetic. They are merely two blue chords in the greater index of musical possibilities. Learn to love them!

I'm working hard to embrace it.

Keith came up with a new chord--C-scarf. Give the man credit for innovation. He's moving into the post-open G era now, and we must follow and allow the visionary to lead us.

Well, if the crazy theory even is possible, doesn't mean it was a good idea.....

I agree and like it. Some here say he was messing with Jagger. The chords sound a bit like in "Spend The Night Together" which was playing on the PA just before Keef& Company took the stage. Perhaps he was riffing (joking) off that

Exactly. Keith has played that intro a thousand times and as a guitarist I can confirm it would be harder to get it wrong than right. It's a straight bar on the 5 strings with a two finger hammer on/off. I'm convinced it was intentional to give effect. I reckon if he had fluffed it he would have laughed as he usually does when he messes up. Possibly a nod to LSTNT or just an attempt to blues it up a little. Maybe he will tell us in an interview one day!

Hmm I almost buy that.... Kinda makes some sense. But why did he repeat it? I'm stumped. Maybe chuck will tell us in his blog .... Not

Don't discard this as a little mistake guys. This was a statement with profound political and cultural meaning which will have IORRians debating for aeons.

I am amazed that this is such a big deal. Keith was being a rocker on a live stage. He played a few bum notes...I mean WTF?!
There are 70's boots out there with songs on them where a guitar is totally out of tune; there are plenty of mistakes in their checkered LIVE past.
Some guitarists never hit a bum note; Keith does. Isn't that part of why we dig him?
