OK, I got Exile on top, probably got ER higher than most folks.....I've got Dirty Work vying for last with SW, B2B and ABB. I've got VL distinctly above the rest of the Vegas era. IMO, Between the Buttons and Satanic Majesties would be down there too, but they were pushing boundaries and somewhat exhausted by the grueling 60's process.

I can understand TSMR as you either like it or not, but I don't think I've encountered anyone actually disliking Between the Buttons.

What about it do you dislike?

I don't hate it, I'll take any Stones album over most records. It's a little too Kinkish if you will. Experiment all you want, but be innovative, not derivative. This isn't an easy ask anyway.......I go through cycles on periods and albums; The only things that are FIRM, is Exile on the top, and Vegas on the bottom. BTB is a fine album, as is SM, unfortunately they are Stones albums........now if they were Black Crowes albums, they would be......legendary.

these lists are always so educational. part of me (the self-centered part) assumes that any stones fan must love them and their music just like i do. but when you look at these lists you realize how they appeal to so many different people in different ways. i take it as a tribute to the band that someone can put BTB near the top of their list and 12x5 at the bottom, when i would have done the opposite.

really cool to see what people think.

my top 5 would be ya-ya's, exile, rolling stones now, beggar's, let it bleed

bottom 5 would be their last 5 studio albums.

I LOVE the first half of 12 X 5. The second mostly sucks and it's sequenced in a way that's really anti-climactic. The Chicago Chess stuff (It's All Over Now, Around and Around, Confessin' the Blues, etc.) sounds really superior, the later (Sept 64) recorded in London hollow (production-wise). Susie Q, Under the Boardwalk, Grown Up Wrong are true throwaways (for me).

BTW, all of the Stones albums are at least a 7 in my book - except maybe Steel Wheels, possibly a high 6. That's not remotely true for any other band (in my book) except You Know Who. (The Antithesis).

Ha ha. Hey, it changes often but I do like BTBabylon. Usually Let It Bleed is my #1... then it will be Sticky Fingers... then Tattoo You. Leaving GYYYO! out is easy because the only other live album they have that comes even close is No Security and then Still Life so there's no point in including it.

Unless they would have released Live In Texas, which is NOW their second best live album but actually their best actual live album...

Brussels has been released, as a download and as that uber expensive box set.

I think that would qualify for an official release. If we're counting live albums, I'd definitely go with that one.

Re: WORST to BEST...Rolling Stones albums

It's impossible to make these lists. First off they change daily. And they deceptive because a #25 Stones album still trumps almost every other band's #1, LOL. Ya-Ya's, Love you Live, Texas 78 and Brussels 73 are such essential albums that one probably should include them in the list. Especially Ya-Yas was released at a time when a live album was way more than a mere contract filler.
I just want to make the point re."Steel Wheels" that I have made countless times on IORR, that if you start substituting the Outtakes version for the real album, your ranking will most likely rise. It will come across much more like a real Stones album.
I had to go and revise. Because even trying to make this "honest' I found myself placing certain albums in a position; but I tried to think like "which album do I ACTUALLY pick up and want to play?

1 - Exile - this one is constant
2 - Sticky Fingers - is practically tied with Exile; always
3 - Ya-Ya's - this one is way more than 'just' a live album; from a time when the Stones reorked songs for the live staGE, and many of their songs became the warhorses they are today
4 - Beggar's Banquet
5 - Hitmakers - I love this album and play it often
6 - Some Girls - such a great album, it also colored by memories, so very subjective
7 - Let it Bleed - it's part of the Big 4, and has GS and YCAGWYW, but I play it so rarely; mainly because I m not a huge fan of studio 'Rambler'
8 - Brussles 73
9 - Black & Blue
10 - Goat's Head Soup
11 - Between the Buttons
12 - Live 78
13 - Bridge to Babylon
14 - Undercover - these last 6 albums are interchangeable
15 - Its only R&R
16 - Their Satanic Majesties Request
17 - No 2
18 - Love You Live
19 - Aftermath - God, this is at # 19; that is amazing just thinking about how highly I regard this album
20 - Decembers Children
21 - Out of our Heads
22 - Steel Wheels (rough version)
23 - Now
24 - Tattoo You (apart from some of the ballads I just dont listen to this much at all)
25 - 12 x 5
26 - Emotional Rescue
27 - A Bigger Bang
28 - Dirty Work
29 - Voodoo Lounge ( I agree with Jagger when he said he thought they should've picked different songs for thr album)

1968-1972 is five years. Simply because 1968 is counted as one. Unless they are ignoring 1970.

Any given point 1968 to same given point in 1969 1yr
Same given point in 69 to same given point 70 1yr
Same given point in 70 to same given point 71 1yr
Same given point in 71 to same given point 72 1yr

Four years

There are only two measures that are somehow objective: worldwide sales and how many times one actually listens to a record.

For worldwide sales figures we have our own Georgelicks.

For personal listening count we have to trust that our reports are honest (we all know it is quite "un-cool to confess we like / dislike certain albums)

My personal listens counter would look like this (reference made to american discography - B&L is too new to include).

Exile On Main Street
Tattoo You
Undercover
Beggars Banquet
Some Girls
Out Of Our Heads
The Rolling Stones NOW
Let It Bleed
Sticky Fingers
Black And Blue
Emotional Rescue
It's Only Rock'n'Roll
The Rolling Stones
A Bigger Bang
Dirty Work
Between The Buttons
Aftermath
Steel Wheels
Their Satanic Majesties Request
12X5
December's Children
Bridges To Babylon
Voodoo Lounge

Ha! A list again. Here we go, best to worst:

1. Exile. (still discover new stuff in that one. Their one truelly magic album)
2. Let It Bleed. (perfection)
3. Tattoo You. (always a pleasure)
4. Beggar's Banquet. (a safe haven one can always return to)
5. Sticky Fingers. (very very good)
6. Get Yer Ya Ya's Out. (all songs are sublime versions except Street Fighting Man which I don't like anyway and I always skip)
7. Some Girls. (some great songs, and the rest sounds great)

8. Aftermath (UK). (cute, fun, interesting)
9. Rolling Stones 1 (UK). (fun)
10. Emotional Rescue. (fun)
11. Out of Our Heads (UK). (some excellent covers).
12. Rolling Stones 2 (UK). (especially for the Chuck Berry covers)

13. Undercover (without the 4 bad songs, this album would be excellent)
14. Black and Blue (oh well, I can sort of listen to all of it)
15. Goat's Head Soup (see above)

16. Their Satanic Majesties Request. (skipping the bad 50%)
17. Bridges to Babylon. (Thief in the Night saves it)
18. It's Only Rock n Roll. (not really fair since I haven't listened to it for many years but don't see why I should)
19. Steel Wheels/Voodoo Lounge/A Bigger Bang. (who cares?)
20. Dirty Work. (without One Hit, it would have been on 21.)
21. Between the Buttons. (nothing here has any interest to me)

I haven't put Blue and Lonesome on the list, because I only listened to it about 4 or 5 times. Maybe when I'd listen to it more, I could form an opinion about it. For the moment, I just can't put myself to listen to it, I don't see much reason to.

smiling smiley Not really much cool, calm en collectiveness about it, I'm afraid. To be honest, I have an intensive job and I live in a country (Spain) which is much louder than my original country (Netherlands). I cherish my moments of silence. When I do put on music (which is maybe once a week), I prefer something which I really like and can really listen to: sitting back and just listening. From my favourite band. Albums from my numbers 1 to 7 provide for that, and if I'm in an adventurous mood, albums 8 to 12. The rest is always second best, so why would I listen to it? I might be completely wrong and miss out on a lot, I am not saying I don't, it's just that B&L hasn't given me the impression that I miss much. I have put it on a few times and my attention wandered and in the end I started doing things (internet, reading, whatever), in which case I prefer silence.

Flowers is great indeed, but most of the songs on it were on other other releases first, so it wouldn't really qualify as a studio album, imo.
