Worst overdub on a Stones record !
Posted by: gotdablouse ()

Killing time before the EVENT tomorrow night...

That particular overdub has bothered me ever since I first heard that tape something like...30 years ago...and only recently found a crazy enough Stones' fan to deem it worthwhile to mention it ;-)

Since there are certainly many crazier fans here, let's go...a few clues :
- from the 70s
- an unusual song
- played live only twice, 20+ years apart

Name the song and timecode of that terrible "punch in"!

Melody?

Well done, the clues probably helped ;-)

And the overdub is exactly at 2'50" - absolutely shocking to my (easy to please) ears. Check it out I'm sure you'll agree.

Yeah.. 2.50.. a few more follow... "yarr"...

Terrible.

I never liked the song much nyway.

It was really embarrassing that they used to additional guitarists to overdub the Austin 2006 DVD. That says a lot about the state Richards and Wood were in in this time. I did not expect them returning on such a high level. Well done.

Huhn? A few more follow? I think you're talking vocal phrases and gotdablouse is talking the sound of the guitar track punch-in being audible? Not sure. Either way, it's just fine. Great track, the Stones swinging loose and Jagger's last really fun vocal interplay with Preston.

It is indeed that strange vocal "well I say" overdub at 2'50" that sounds like it was done by someone recording with a mono tape recorder...the following ones aren't as bad. I wonder how they let that slip through, someone MUST have heard it!

It sounds like cats dying at one point.

When I first saw the title of this thread, I was expecting some sort of listing and discussion. I would like to add that strange middle rapping bit in Anybody Seen My Baby to the list of worst overdubs; not just poor studio craft but a truly sucky drop-in that adds nothing to the track.

The worst overdubs are on Got Live If You Want It LP.

We don't know that. How come everyone's so sure about that? It says "Additional Recordings by Pierre de Beauport". Yes but additional recordings in what sense? Guitar work? Camera work? Background music for segments? Who knows?

if keith heard it i'd like to think he left it in to exact revenge for including the track on the album at all. this track is definitely one of the low points for the pre-Dirty Work stones IMO.

I just love the whole Black and Blue album. Great sound, great songs, and a lot of Exile feel with songs in different styles. One of my 15 on my top 10 list. :-)

Can't believe this experimental nothingness was included on B&B and Worried About You and Slave were left off. The drugs must have been particularly good (or bad) that year.

I think on Flashpoint were a couple of realy bad overdubs with you hear immediately that it is not the genuine thing.
Like the "Ooh, Ooh, Ooh's" from the female backsingers on JJF or the guitar solo on Start me up.

There's quite the overdub on Neighbours from Live Licks that's glaringly obvious. At least the Start Me Up solo sounds good.

Huh? I'm listening to Melody and at 2:50 I hear a guitar but it sounds cool, Kind of a bluesy jazz sound. What do you think is particularly bad about it? the way its mixed? How its played?

Rocks Off and Brown Sugar have overdubs? Never noticed, although how anyone could notice anything other than the murderous edit in Rocks Off...

Additional Recordings always means overdubs for live material, nothing else.

Yeah, RO is technically bad edit not overdub, but as far as I remember on BS there is something wrong with sax solo around second minute.

Holy shit. There are TWO saxophones playing right at that point, starting at 1:48 and then getting really bad at 1:55!

Ha ha. Can't believe I never actually listened to that!

I was so glad they included RO on that, and so disappointed in the horrendous edit.

Not a guitar overdub, a voice overdub, a weird "well I say" that sounds like someone's dubbing on a mono tape recorder while listening to the track played back on another recorder!

There you go : [youtu.be] cued up for you at 2'45" ;-)

It's not an overdub but I love Ronnie's laugh on How Can I Stop.
