Not Fade Away
(Norman Petty / Charles Hardin Holly)

Regent Sound Studios, London, UK, January 28 & 29, 1964

Mick Jagger - vocals, maracas
Keith Richards - acoustic guitar, electric guitar
Charlie Watts - drums
Bill Wyman - bass
Brian Jones - harmonica, tambourine

I wanna tell you how it's gonna be
You're gonna give your love to me
I'm gonna love you night and day
Well, love is love and not fade away
Well, love is love and not fade away

And my love is bigger than a Cadillac
I'll try to show it if you drive me back
Your love for me has got to be real
Before you'd have noticed how I feel
Love real not fade away
Well, love real not fade away, yeah

I wanna tell you how it's gonna be
You're gonna give your love to me
Love that lasts more than one day
Well, love is love and not fade away
Well, love is love and not fade away
Well, love is love and not fade away
Well, love is love and not fade away
Not fade away, not fade away

Produced by Andrew Loog Oldham

First released on:
The Rolling Stones - “Not fade Away / Little By Little” 7” single
(Decca F 11845) UK, February 21, 1964

Fantastic burst of energy in a song that became one of the first mod hit records here in the UK performed by a white pop/r'n'b band so the Stones really increased their audience with this.

It's a great cover that for me knocks spots off the original. One of Brian Jones best moments on harmonica too.

genius cover. i kind of think this was their first step towards songwriting. of course it's a buddy holly song, but their arrangement was very clever, particularly speeding it up and emphasizing the bo diddly beat.

also, it went a long way to defining their early sound and contrasting sharply with the beatles. if you play the beatle's buddy holly cover ("words of love" ) next to this one, it's a great illustration of how different the two bands were from the very start.

Stunning opening track to their equally stunning debut album. Not Fade Away positively leaps off the record, vaulting out of the speakers and into the listener’s heart and soul. Not only do the Stones take Buddy Holly’s famous hit in a completely different direction, but they do it in a way that brilliantly showcases their prowess and virtuosity.

Keith’s opening guitar notes electrify the listener, laying down an irresistible beat that is then gloriously augmented by Charlie and Bill’s swinging rhythm section. Sound familiar? Well, this track sets the template for the Stones’ music from that point forward. Mick’s vocals, awash with confidence and bravado, embody the freedom and swagger that was to define them for their entire career. And Brian’s exuberant harp, snaking through the song, confirms that the Stones are about to take over the world (along with some lads from Liverpool).

England’s Newest Hitmakers indeed.

"Richards's opening declamation on acoustic is so vibrant
it suggests Les Paul needn't have bothered with the electricity thing after all."
- Mojo magazine, 2002

"The first week of February I returned from my daily West End jaunts and hustles to the Mapesbury [flat]
and found Keith exactly where I'd left him that morning - fag in mouth, guitar on knee, singing bits of Buddy Holly's 'Not Fade Away'.
He was injecting an acoustic Bo Diddley riff into one of our favourite songs. I heard our next record.
I could actually hear the record in the room. The way he played it - you could hear the whole record.
It was less pop and more rock. It was a magical moment for me."
- ALO, Stoned

A cathartic explosion of music, unleashing the message, things are different now. Welcome to the Rolling Stones. Wonderful version, that showed what would come in the future, the originality and propulsion was infectious.

One of my favourites from their later concert tours as well. Thought it worked very well as a different opener for voodoo lounge. Some will disagree here but I loved it live on that tour...and made me dig out the original for a re-listen.

Both had the Bo diddly beat. Mona came direct from bo.

Due to it not being mentioned in the above credits the obvious should be noted that Keith used his 12 string acoustic on the studio recording.

Really like the 94/95 live concert opening song. The Stripped version is so cool!
Come on Stones, play it live this autumn in Europe!

Pete.

If I have someone I want to explain the Rolling Stones sound to I first play them a snippet of Holly's acoustic Fade Away, a snippet of Bo Diddley, and then play them the Stones version to show the mashup of the two and the ignition of genius.

To me this song was a not so original try to capture the groove of Bo Diddley and other black musicians who had already done it much, much better.

Someone elses groove, someone elses lyrics marketed in a shove down your throat manner to unsuspecting and ignorant white kids in a formula which would prove successful but hardly inspirational.

Despite it's popularity I could never stomach this tune by the Stones. peace

For your sake Rockee I'll listen to it again but I have a feeling it ain't gonna do no good. I think it is more of an age thing really, I didn't dig the stones until Let it Bleed, where imho they really started playing their own music instead of jumping on someone elses bus. So mabye a better statement of Not Fade Away is to say, "It's before my time". peace always
