I'm comparing it to movies not to "documentaries" like Gimme Shelter or Tommy.

Tommy was a "documentary"?

I don't think so.

The last time I saw it, it was a movie based on the album Tommy by the Who, and featured actors (Oliver Reed) and actresses (Ann-Margret) playing the various roles. Roger Daltrey played Tommy. Keith Moon played Uncle Ernie. Tina Turner played the Acid Queen. Eric Clapton played a memorable version of "Eyesight To The Blind". Elton John was the Pinball Wizard. There were many other guest appearances by a variety of people in this movie.

I forgot about the Rutles. I would love to see a Stones parody as good as this one. All You Need Is Cash is brilliant.

"As Beers Go Bye Bye"

"Deep Knee Squat Flash"

"Let It Scab"

"Sympathy for the Lawyer"

and "You Can't Always Get Rid of What You Dont Want" < that's the best

Depends whether people are taking about 'movies' ie scripted and directed (or in the case of Spinal Tap - loosely scripted) or documentary

Personally my favourite rock 'movie' is Still Crazy, more so than the Tap. But recently documentaries with a narrative running through them have definitely come to more prominence in the modern media and become very in vogue. (as opposed to concert films) There have been some doozies: Anvil, Flight 666, Metal: A Headbangers Journey, Global Metal, Lemmy, I'm also really looking forward to the new Saxon doc.

Must admit though, didn’t think much of the new Rush Doc, went to Coventry to see it with a mate, was Ok, and to be honest, got pretty pissed up on the way and while I was in there, but that usually helps me enjoy any rock related activity.

Oh yeah, there was the Exile doc as well, but to be honest that didn’t really float my boat too much, either

I think La Bamba has been the most lucrative one.
Is American Graffiti a Rock movie?

Good call - One Trick Pony!! Has the added benefit of (AFAIK) Lou Reed's only movie role: record producer. Lou's quite good, and so so cool, as I remember.

I have to cast a vote for Rock n Roll High School, starring the Ramones, PJ Soles (drool), and also Clint Howard (Ron's little brother) in a hilarious role.

I'm trying to stay away from concert stuff but I did think of a movie 'about' rock music that covers some interesting ground regarding recording, producing, and what a performer 'can take on the road'. Paul Simon and Rip Torn in 'One Trick Pony'.

It's a great story of a one hit wonder 60's folk singer who in actual fact is what you call a musician's musician. Of course all he is known for is his folky protest song. He has the tightest band on the circuit but can't break into a new image. He sleeps with a producers wife to enable him to cut the record his band can hang a tour on but it gets overproduced to where they can't do it live. Intersting music insight.

But the best part is the movie does not work if the main character is not a musicians musician, I mean he has to sound better than the average band or it does not work. I believe the line goes something like ' we slipped outside to smoke a J and blew the room away'.

Hello,

'The Kids Are Alright'. Only seen it about 800 times, hah-hah!

Plus 'The Rutles: All You Need Is Cash' and 'This Is Spinal Tap': sheer joy.

Cheers,

Si.

>Good call - One Trick Pony!! Has the added benefit of (AFAIK) Lou Reed's only movie role: record producer. Lou's quite good, and so so cool, as I remember.

Lou had a role in the rather funny GET CRAZY. If I recall correctly (throw the dice), he played a washed-up Rock Star named Auden. I think Lou's then-wife Sylvia can be seen in the film (and Malcolm MacDowell does a hilarious Mick).

Great rock movies no one has mentioned (that I've noticed anyway):

DIG!

UNDER GREAT WHITE NORTHERN LIGHTS

NICO: ICON

(and has anyone mentioned L&G,TRS? Maybe I missed it...)
