"I just wrote the song on guitar. Actually, it's the oldest song on the album, for me anyway. I wrote the song on guitar, and I played guitar on it on the record. I would just play it at home; I had it for a couple of years, actually. I tried to write it a bit more complicated, and in the end I made it simpler - I simplified it. And then when we were in Barbados, Keith started playing keyboards on it. And then I switched to play keyboards, and he played guitar and I played harpsichord. So it gave it a slightly different feel, but it always was a sort of 16th century form. And I was trying to take it away from there a little bit, but then I brought it back. And then Chuck (Leavell) played the harpsichord, and I ended up playing guitar on it again"
Mick Jagger, June 1994

Angel In My Heart was pretty cool. For Mick's solo album, there were some nice writeups that mentioned it. I think he tried to do the same again hoping it would get the same praise, but I don't think it worked ... mostly the same song with much cornier lyrics.

New Faces & Suck On the Jugular, the 2 tracks I would skip. The rest of Voodoo is pretty damn good.

love it, beautiful baroque song

thumbs up

Yep, as folks have said, in the Lady Jane mould ...and an example of how varied Mick and Keith's musical influences have been .

It's not all the Blues and Country ...A reminder that they're English and European.

Nice song in the Lady Jane tradition.

I'm grateful I was a teenager in the 80s because had I come of age in the 90s vomit-inducing songs like this one might have prevented me from becoming a Stones fan.

I always found Out of Tears was a bit maudlin, so I concur.

A good 'un, Voodoo sure does have quite a lot of quality tunes on it.

Absolute favourites from it have always been Moon is Up, Love is Strong, The Worst, New Faces, Sparks Will Fly. The album coda of Baby Break it Down, Thru and Thru and Mean Disposition is pretty great too.

The sleazy groovy Brand New Car, You got me Rocking - Voodoo is well worth revisiting.

Hey Hey Ireland! You got me rockin.

I read somewhere the song is about Kurt Cobain. True?

That's ridiculous. Where did you read that?

VOODOO BREW is the place to find what's the only great thing about this song - Keith recording the acoustic overdub with a ton of blues tunes inbetween!

I got the same vibe, likely from the harpsichord. Not bad for a post '83 tune.

Jagger isn't singing about a rival, He's singing about a young man taking his daughter away. And he realises that in the long run,it serves him right. He describes the young man in ways that resemble his younger self, having it off with people's lovely young daughters. Now he's the protective father figure. A neat little song about how your perspective changes with time. What goes around, comes around.

As he says, the younger man is 'paying the devil his due.'

That's how I interpreted it as well.

Along with the Similary styled 'Angel In My Heart'. 'New Faces' goes to show that Mick still had/has the ability to churn out a fine song. Viewed from the perspective of an older man. It goes against the criticism that the more modern Stones songs don't reflect their age. My goodness it's 27 years old now.. The simple Marta cover is very nice.

The song would have fitted well on a 1966 album. It's that era. By 1994 it made very little sense.

I love Keith's acoustic riff,it's fun to play and a great listen. A real gem as with Moon Is Up and Sweethearts. I always thought it was about Jade Jagger and Mick being the worried father.
