If You Really Want To Be My Friend

While strumming on my guitar last night this song came into my head. I've just realised how great this song is, even though I've heard it so many times.

That's what I love about the Stones, and does it ever happen to you, that a song that before had never really interested me much suddenly becomes a favourite.

So I start the campaign here, to get "IYRWTBMF" included in the next tour. (Followed by "Short and Curlies") I'd pay money to see that!

I think I've bust a button on my trousers....

Sorry Skelly, but I don't think they can play this one live!

Anything?! Can you imagine them doing Their Satanic Majesties Request back to back? That would be a disaster! (I can produce a longer 'no go' list.........)

That's not really a personal favorite of mine. Never was and never will be.

But a song that never intrested me was Melody. Until a couple of months ago. I played Black & Blue and I was gonna skip melody, but changed my mind. And now it's one of the tracks I play the most.

I am so glad someone finally mentions this song. I always think of this tune together with "Let it Loose". They are both these long torch type soul ballads where Jagger sings his ass off. And the backing vox arrangment is excellent both times. For some reason many fans don't like "Friend" that much. But I love the changes. Especially the two times it goes to the bridge: ""I know you think life is a thriller..."

Have always liked the chorus, especiallly
the part that goes something like

"Now baby whats the point in fightin"

<Sorry if thats wrong, haven't heard this
one in a long time...this board defenitely
keeps you on your toes>

- Thru our past darkly...

<Now baby whats the point in fightin">

That part is remarkably similar to "Ooh, it leads the small town girls astray" in Lonely At The Top (She's The Boss) smiling smiley

Friend is a great song! Let it loose too. And what bullshit that they can't play them! Of course they can, if they want to. Who would have expected CYHMK, Worried, She smiled sweetly, 2000 light years, Some girls and I got the blues?

The Stones can play whatever song they like from their vast cataloge of rock classics! They have proved it over and over again. We are talking about some of the worlds greatest musicians here, and it is incredible that anyone can even think that they can't pull this off....

I love the Stones mid to late 70s soul stuff. Heartbreaker, 100 Years Ago, IYRWTBMF,Fool To Cry and even Tops and Worried are great songs. By recording those songs, I feel they stayed close to thier roots.

I think they COULD play IYRWTBMF live but I really don't know how it would play unless they did a duet with someone. I don't know if they could pull it off with just Mick and the backup singers. It's a great studio track but it's not a song the band could be really loose with.

Keith of course is completely straight

IMO they can,t match sway, time waits, and winter and others without taylor, yeah
they can do different arrangements to get by but it would not be the same .

how can you play winter without Taylor's vibrato and feel just not the same.

I think Bernard and Keith (if he could hold it together) would sound great on this song live.

"I know you think that life is a thriller - "A THRILLE-----RRR""

I think I've bust a button on my trousers....

YEa but that's the point. I don't think they could do it. Also, the piano in that song is a key component and I'm not sure Chuck has enough sould for it

agreed...awesome song! Great lead and backing vocals...touching lyrics...nicely produced and played. Overshadowed on IORR album by Time Waits for No One...otherwise a trerrific ballad!

This song stinks! (Picture face of me chewing a lemon sprinkled with areshole dust when saying this).

OpenG you never fail to bore with getting in a Taylor compliment.

This song should have been shot at conception.

Behind "Back to zero" it's probably the worst song they ever released.

Bleeeerrrrkkk. Yuk.

Have you ever lent somebody $20 and never seen them again? It was probably worth it.

It's similar (in feel and arrangement) to Shine A Light (which IMO is better).

It's an average Stones ballad which does have similarities to Let It Loose in places but it's far, far less convincing.

IMO, the Lesley guitar links it with Let It Loose, but the song is more of a feminine pop/soul number - sort of colorless in a way.
