Speaking of Ron Wood, I just got back from a lecture at Abbey Road where they played the unmixed tracks from the Jeff Beck Group's "Ain't Superstitious" with Ronnie on bass and Rod on vocals. Sounded great. Recorded in #2, where The Beatles of course, did most of their work. Ken Scott, the engineer on the session, was there and gave a nice talk.

it's silly to compare ron and MT
they had different jobs
MT's job was to be the lead guitarist
Ronnie's was to be Keith's buddy since MJ was through with doing that.

It is not only not silly to compare them when they played on many of the same songs live, but continual posting of solos from those songs almost automatically invites comparison. And for Mr. Wood, the comparison on those songs doesn't come out well. I speak of Tumbling Dice, YGAGWYW, Angie, Gimme Shelter, and others posted here as supposedly "great" Ron Wood solos. You want great Ron Wood solos? Stick to Beast Of Burden, Start Me Up, and some of the other things he recorded with the Stones. I will agree that they are very nice.

I like TD and Happy better with Ronnie, so it isn't written in stone that Taylor's slow country licks and soft slide playing are the better of those performances...

But back on topic. It´s time for some of the legendary studio solos:

Not their best tune, but a lovely solo:

Yeah, that "Neighbours" is trademark Ronnie, simple but effective. I really like the tone he - and Keith - had those days. Having edge but breathing = rock and roll?

I love the way he makes room for Keith in the middle of his Neighbours-solo thumbs up

Powerage: You don´t think Ronnie can play that SMU-solo again today, when he could do this 16 years later?

This thing was edited away for the final version of We Had It All on the Deluxe release (this is version #1).

There are 10 notes in there, tops, but they´re all beautiful - and should have been kept, although Sugar Blues harp is wonderful, too.

Watch this, and be Ronnie on stage. Pretty cool!

As will I. The Taylor-Wood comparison is not only relevant but precisely the point here. Most of the critical posters in this thread (save possibly Kleerie) would happily agree that we like Ronnie lots with the Faces, in his early days with the Stones, and when he plays solo or with Mick Taylor nowadays. We just don't like his attempts at Stones solos that Taylor did previously, because Taylor's solos were, by consensus, better. Taylor is just a better guitarist in every respect, and there is no argument to be had about that.

Dandie, by the way, has directly compared Taylor and Wood just as much as, if not more than, anyone else in this thread by repeatedly saying that he likes Wood's takes on these solos more than Taylor's.

That´s because you constantly are bringing it up, and because certain posters forget to put "imo" in their posts smiling smiley

There isn´t a blueprint for what a good solo is, Stonesburst. That´s why the comparison is useless. Take for instance YCAGWYW, a song where they have changed the arrangement to a quicker, more gospel-ish beat. In other words, they have decided to bring it back to its original form. When Ronnie sticks to that arrangement, and add a couple of blue notes the comparison with Taylor becomes hilarious. Add the fact that the band is different, and consists of 70 year olds, and it becomes ridiculous, imo.

One note can say more than a thousand, and no, I don´t think other guitarists would have improved Neighbours, for instance...

Yes, it's clear you do.

For the people who continually complain about Taylor being brought up at all: There was an "original sin" in this thread. Far from making it just a positive thread about Ronnie's solos, Mathijs couldn't help take yet another opportunity to pursue his bizarre "Taylor can't play rhythm" theory. That's bound to raise the ire of us Taylorites every time.

For me, there is no Ronnie performance better on a track on which Taylor played before. None. My tastes.
