Thanks! But, do you know what electric guitars he used? There is some site that lists those things.

What is a "red devil LP studio"?

Keith was using Telecasters, a Ted Newman Jones five-string and a chery 1959 LP Junior on the 1973 tour, while ES-355's, LP's, Strats, Zemeitis and what more were available in abundance.

Hey Mathijs. Could you please tell me what guitar and amp (And pedals if such are used) Keith uses on Brown Sugar (Original studio track)??? The sound on it is so awesome. Maybe the best yet I think.

And if you have time for it, please these as well. Same questions (All of them are the studio tracks):

-Flip The Switch (I think you know this winking smiley)
-Midnight Rambler
-Break The Spell
-Sad, Sad, Sad
-Love Is Strong
-Sparks Will Fly

Thanks.........

Difficult to tell. He was playing a 70 watt silver face Fender Twin for sure, and the studio's technician said in an article that Keith played his "black SG, the one with the sharp horns that he played a lot on this tour". well, I have never ever seen a picture of Taylor or Keith with a black SG. The only black/Ebony guitar in the Stones camp was Richards ES-355. A guitar with "sharp horns" could be either the Ampeg Armstrong, an SG, a LP junior or the 355 again..The Armstrong it is certainly not, as the technician specifically mentions that Wyman played the Ampeg bass, and not Richards. If I follow my ears, I'd say that it is a P90 pickup you hear, and not a PAF. So, in the end, my closest guess is the LP Junior, a guitar keith also mentiones for Honky Tonk Women.

Sounds like a Tele to me, but a Junior is a close contender.

> -Midnight Rambler

He used the Australian Maton hollow body for that one, through a Triumph amp.

> -Break The Spell
Could be anything. Not a Tele though. The Ernie Ball Silhouette is a close contender.

> -Sad, Sad, Sad
Riff: Jagger on a Tele, solo's Keith the Silhouette for sure.

> -Love Is Strong
Tele for sure, in fact his 52 with the brass bridge (you can tell by the sound).

> -Sparks Will Fly

See Love is Strong.

That's the article!

What guitar was Keith playing?

It was a Gibson, but not a Les Paul. Do you know that model that was right under the Les Paul, the solid body double cutaway-what is that? Oh yeah, the SG. I think it was an SG, and as I recall it was black. I remember it had those sharp horns on the cutaways. That's what he played most of the time he was here.
>>>

I really doubt the SG, my guess is that he means the LP junior double cut-away, that keith spoke about in other interviews and he used quite a lot on stage in 1973 and 1975.

LP junior double cut-away; is that the red one that I called Red devil? The one he uses on the Faces final concert.

I have a meeting with Rick Hall this weekend. Rick Hall is the founder and owner of the legendary Sound Studios in Muscle Shoals Alabama. As seen on the "Brown Sugar" recording page, the producers that are seen in the movie Gimme Shelter used to work for Rick and opened up the studios seen in Gimme Shelter as a rival to Rick Hall. It is most interesting to watch Gimme Shelter with Rick and Linda Hall....they maintain the Stones thought they were coming to their studio to record Wild Horses & Brown Sugar, but were duped by Johnson, their former employee. The Halls live not far from the site of the stuido seen in Gimme Shelter and tell me it has been sold to a movie company. I wanted someone to make into a Brown Sugar shrine! Very interesting stuff!
