I think U2 is exactly where the Stones were in 81/89 - there is another generation of fans coming aboard.

What more surprise me is than all of you consider to U2 a rock band......

Anyway... how many shows do U2 in this tour?? In Europe isn´t even 30... how many shows do the Stones???

We can talk about price tickets too..... but specially... we can talk about distribution´s tickets... Go to see E-Bay!!! I´m sure than 50% of U2 tickets are in scalper´s hands!!! Trying do bussinnes of this!!! Not just in UK how usual... Italy, Spain, France, Portugal... All them!!

Even in this, the Stones are much more proffesionals (thanks God) than U2... If the disasters of the U2 tickets happen in a Stones tour!!!!!! Ufff... I´m sure than lot of people will be shouting at them (papers, journalists, FANS..)

be HAPPY

The difference between U2 and the Stones is that U2 are a trend act and the Stones a nostalgia act. Of course a trend act is able to sell tickets a lot faster, because all the screaming teenis out there rush to the ticket shop as soon as sales are opened to the public.

Btw, what exactly means "biggest band in the world"? It's such an odd and characterless term. Does it mean they sell most units of albums of all artists around. Does it mean they make the most money in the music business in general? Does it mean they have they the biggest band in terms of the number of band members they have? :-D
"Greatest Rock 'n Roll Band in the world" is a real title. It gives a clue about the quality and the magic of the Stones music.
If I was Bono I wouldn't be proud to be entitled "the biggest...". It only reflects economical success, but doesn't credit their musical efforts.
And this says it all: THERE IS JUST NOT F*CKIN COMPARISON BETWEEN U2 AND THE STONES! No matter how fast U2 is able to sell 80.000 tickets...

The comparison is hard to make because they started out almost 20 years later, That is the only reason.
They sell more albums now and they have a bigger tour now then the stones. But as ThatsWhatISay says, U2 are still hot as hell because they still deliver great albums and the stones are an nostalgia act because they don't produce any relevant albums anymore. But give the guys a lot of credits because they still have the original band members and are the biggest band for a long time, and that is something to have respect for.

Let's see what they will come up with the upcoming years. I think they're great and i'm curious!

Cheers,
Wuudy

basically U2 are the best band in the world today and therefore their tickets will always sell quickly.
In some places they will sell even quicker.....
Don't know what the argument is..?

In France, U2 is more popular then the stones.
I guess it's just too bad for the french that they
can't seem to distinguish a good act from a fake one.
Come to think it, they have this homebred guy Johnny Haliday
or whatever, that also sells out stadiums. Nobody outside
of France wants to see that guy coming around. I don't think
you have to be a good act to sell a couple of stadiums
worth of tickets over there. It's a nice country, friendly
people, good food, good wine, good literature, but as for
music, maybe look somewhere else.

It's purely the sames for the Stones guy.

Back to Bono...

The bottom line is : Bono wants to change the world, Jagger does not.

No, you're not. How to dismantle is a lot weaker then the previous ones.

U2 is a great live band - Bono, Mick, and Keith are all too full of themselves.

No, not back to Bono. Let's put it in pesrpective even if I ain't a musicolog at all. There's no sociological move behind U2.Just ticket sellers at this point of Time.

a) Robert Johnson, Slim harpo, Muddy waters : well it sounds from where it all comes from : Bach
b) The Beatles : definitively : Mozart
c) And Beethoven : Sturm and Drang
Aftermath :their First Symphony
Satisfaction : Third, Eroica
Jumpin' + Street : Fifth, Emperor
Exile : the Sith
Start me up : their Seventh
Now what is missing : the NINTH ...to be still written. Five to ten notes

Keith, that will come overnight. For Music History. That page is in depth missing.

Well, of course U2 sells quicker. It's easy swallowable music. Pop with rock undertones. Kindda like The Beatles. U2 can sell out everything quicker than The Stones nowadays I think. But when you go to a Stones show you get much better music for your buck.

I never liked U2, so maybe this post is a little "coloured" by that.

Who cares, the Stones sell out concerts for over 40 years now, U2 is around for little over 20 years. Both bands are excellent rock bands and the Stones are still the biggest and greatest Rock And Rol Band in the wolrd and will NEVER be topped. And hey, there's more place than for one on the top of a mountain!

Well, expect for some little periods (1981-82 surely, 1989-90 maybe) the Stones has never been the number one band in the world... in the golden 60's the Beatles were far beyond them, in the dinosaur years of the 70's Led Zeppelin were miles ahead of them in terms of popularity... And those were the times when the Stones were considered 'hot'. So I don't see any problem that some current pop band is doing better then them.. The Stones are used to that. There always seems to be a room for them, too.

What does it matter who sells
more tickets to a venue? If I
like them i go if i don't i don't.
Matter of fact if there's less people
and a smaller venue it can be a more
intimate and interactive show. Stadium
rock is okay if you like spectacles
and need the assurance that everybody
loves your favourite band, but personally
I just like a good rock and roll show.

That is true Davido.. but the problem of pop groups like the Stones taking the route into smaller venues is that it turns out to be a kind elite fun for high class, a Las Vegas and Sinatra sort of thing. Namely, the ticket prices go up, and the only people to have afford to these tickets are very healthy middle aged people.. Well, that's normal with stadiums too, but it can be much worse still I am afraid...

French people are sometimes stupid about music and the stones are less popular in France than they were a few years ago.

Sad sad sad.

Hey Le Paul...

Remeber in the early 60's when Beatlemania started was the French public who prefered the Stones...Don't think is nice to call ANY public stupid.

Yes in France there's this jerk Johnny, but in the UK theres Bobby Williams and then there are millions who love Celine Dion, there's even people who like Phil Collins FGS....WHO CARES.

Just bring the Stones

leteyer, I was also remembering that when the Stones started to get international, France was a place where they had a really strong following, even greater than the Beatles. And in many ways France has been a central and important Stonesland - that's the place where they have done some of their best studio stuff ever - I hope they will continue this tradition... And of all the Stones related places in the whole world, I suppose Nellcote must be the most sacred and magical one...

Don't forget there is a new trend here in France : going to live shows. Nearly every single act (be it good or bad) sells out gigs MONTHS ahead of performance day nowadays.
That's how the music business works here now : people illegally download mp3s of official albums and then run to buy concert tickets with the money they've saved on not buying CDs, hence the "lemming effect" for the U2 date(s).
The latest NIN album has not yet been released (could be shit or could be good) but the Paris-Zénith 22/6/05 gig is already nearly sold out. Go figure...

And some people try to make a comfy benefit by reselling their ticket on ebay!

U2 is crushing right now because they are the ONLY major band getting ready to tour and they have a new album out. As far as the original post, The Stones have nothing to prove and its time to stop bashing them. They get criticized for the for everything.

U2 has proven they are a great band with 25 years under their belt, but even they do not want to be on tour the same time The Stones are.....they know who the people will spend their money on to see.
