I Want To Be Loved (early version)
(Willie Dixon)

IBC Studios, Portland Place, London, UK, March 11, 1963

Mick Jagger - vocals
Keith Richards - electric guitar
Charlie Watts - drums
Bill Wyman - bass
Brian Jones - harmonica
Ian Stewart - piano

The stars in your eyes set my soul on fire
Your voice is like an angel above me
The touch of your hand drives me insane
But baby, I wants to be loved

I'm crazy 'bout ev'ry little thing you do
I cherish the way you hug me
Your kiss is so sweet, honey, it can't be beat
But baby, I wants to be loved

Ev'ry time I ask you for a date
You don't come at all, or you're mighty late
I ask you to dance, take a little spin
You say: Wait a minute, daddy, here comes my friend

I love the way you walk when you pass me by
Even when you try to snub me
You kiss me, honey, when you give me the eye
But baby, I wants to be loved, right now

Well, ev'ry time I ask you for a date
You don't come at all, or mighty late
I ask you to dance, take a little spin
You say: Wait a minute, daddy, here comes my friend

I love the way you walk when you pass me by
And even when you try to snub me
You kiss me, honey, when you give me the eye
But baby, I wants to be loved

Produced by Glyn Johns

First released on:

Stu's honky-tonk piano is more prominent than on the b-side.

Like all the other IBC demos this is a decent enough cover version but hardly heralds the coming of the greatest rock and roll band in the world.

They were better than a rock and roll band at that point. They had more roll. A lot of energy and fun in those IBC cuts.

Indeed.

This is a nice version - a bit more relaxed than the 7" b-side. More prominent piano, which is very good. Brian´s harmonica, though, is much better on the single!

...

Threads about "the old days" get a bit lost among the ones about the upcoming shows - which is not very surprising, I guess.
To me the period after 1983 hasn´t really produced anything as good/fresh as these 1963 recordings...

Whatever kind of group the Stones were when they walked into IBC in 1963, we only got glimpses of that later on. No wonder they have such a legacy. They were so many different bands over the years. They were much more than the 'Greatest Rock and Roll Band In The World. That is such a disservice to how wide ranging a musical outfit they were in their first 36 years.
