I heard it live in 97.
The 81/82 versions are way better. No comparison.

It´s really worse.

Chucky is playing the marimba on his keyboard (what the @#$%&!?), that is the GUITAR PART of the 81/82 version, which really rocked.

The 97/98 version (heard it in Nürnberg) hasn´t got any edges and is really lame.

I heard it in the Amsterdam Arena once in '98.
It was fun to hear the song live for the first time but wasn't better than the '81 version.

Cheers,
Wuudy

agree with the above posters. in fact, there are some '97 versions that are borderline embarrassing...

UMT was the song selected via the web for the Stones to play in Vancouver in 98 I recall. I like the 81 version better.

It was also the Web song for opening night in chicago, however, there is not even a close comparison. Infact, that night mick said on stage "how does that end? its 3 f#'s isant it" man, if they opened with UMT in 05, it would rock

It's true there is no comparison. The 1981 version was adapted by the Stones to be a set opening rocker, and it is fantastic. In 1997 the idea was to do the song like the studio original, which is nothing like the 1981 version. I've heard six or more versions of 1997 and they are great as well. The 1997 versions are similar to the 1969 versions.
