The White Stripes

On the last tour The White Stripes did some shows with the Stones. Did any of you folks see them and how were they. I love the loud punk guitar sound they have.

I saw them as the Stnes opening act at the Air Canada Centre
in Toronto. While I can appreciate their blues rock roots
they did not seem to come across well in this large
setting. Without a bass player their sound was
tinny, irritating and lacked a bottom end.
They received little or no applause,
to put it nicely. It's beyond me
why they don't add a bass.
Seems just plain stupid.

My sincerest regrets to the fans, I would like to
like them, but unfortunately, in my estimation
seeing them here, they received a definate
thumbs down.

I`ve never seen them live, but i`ve seen them on tv. I think they are great, but I think they could be stronger with a bassplayer. I got 3 cd`s with them and I`m impressed by how they managed to make melodies out of nothing and there is variations. I`m curious how they will work out in a band, but I won`t destroy their stile.

I'm in love with Meg, she's SO hot....They play like the Devil. The only opener ever which all the Stones watched the whole thing thru...........Just listen to Death Letter Blues (Son House)...........No Bass please!

Yeah but have a look at Son House's version as an extra on the DVD Desperate Man Blues and you'll see the real thing. It maybe recorded late in Son's career but the ghosts of the Delta are still alive in his fingers..... raw blues....watch it!

I saw them open in Columbus. Good show. I have both their Cds and am a fan. My friend with me is not a fan, and didn't care much for them.

I was on the end of the 5th row. When the Stones moved to the b-stage, I moved back down the arena floor to get a better view. After the first song started Jack, Meg, and a guy friend of Meg's came up beside me and rocked-on.

I like them a lot. The best new band since Nirvana IMO. Their rendition of Stop Breaking Down is very good. I like Jacks White's playing a lot. It's Nirvana with a heavy blues influence. So it rocks quite hard. And the two band members make it sound as thunderous as Led Zeppelin did with three members.

They were supposed to open for David Bowie in Lunden 2002. But they couldn't make it, so instead we got this shitty band called The Real People from somewhere in England. But Bowie was very good.

KSIE: The White Stripes made more than 2 albums. Did you know this? There's Elephant, White Blood Cells and De Stijl and White Stripes. Check them here: [www.whitestripes.com]

I'm thinking of buying their DVD called "Under Blackpool Lights" too. I bet it's cool..............But not quite Four Flicks though. winking smiley

Great band. Played in a small venue in Copenhagen 2003. First time ever I went to a concert without having heard one tune beforehand. But a lot of fans here in this forum made me go. I had absolutely no regrets. Great performance. Very loud. With a lot of energy. Go and see them if you can.

Their song "Seven Nation Army" was played over the PA shortly before the Stones took the stage at European stadium shows in 2003. Perfect for the occasion!

It is cool! I found it for $15US (26 songs) and I'd recommend it to anyone here. They're non-stop!

I too saw them at the ACC when they opened for the Stones in October '02 and was not impressed. Infact, I was utterly bored after the first song because everything that came after the first song sounded exactly the same as the first song. Same damn drum beat to every tune man. I don't get it. And the lead singer looks like he's been dragged across the Sahara for a two year period without a break. Not attractive. Two thumbs down. They were the worst opener in my opinion. I'd rather sit through the Polyphonic Spree stoners again (and I had to sit through this twice when I went to see Bowie) than watch that dysfunction known as the White Stripes again. Don't get the hype, don't want to.

I strongly suggest to anyone the new White Stripes live DVD "Under Blackpool Lights". Their music is very raw, sounds to me like this new canadian band in Austin, "Grady". Punk blues music [www.shadygrady.net]

Well it seems so far that there are more who like them than not. I think Jack is one of the best rock guitarist to come out in a very long time . It would be interesting to see what would happen with added bass and maybe a little organ ...but as long as it didn't wreck the raw loud sound...

I saw them in Cologne two years ago and it was the greatest concert I´ve ever been to. It was sweaty, raw and so loud that I couldn´t hear for the next three days. Jack was just insane. I have never seen such a passionate and authentic performer before. They opened with "Black Math" and he busted two strings right away. They played a shit-hot 90+min set and Jack smashed Meg´s drumset at the end.

The "Under Blackpool Lights" DVD is a must.

I pretty sure Jack was inspired by Canadian guitarist Gordie Johnson from Big Sugar and now from Grady. Gordie used to play very loud guitar. Jack White & Gordie Johnson are similar guitarist, their sound is also very similar but Mr Johnson started 10 years ago with Big Sugar. Highly recommended band for those who like the White Stripes. Recommended album : Hemivision

Right, let me have a very original contribution.
I saw the White Stripes three times. They are really really
good. If they are ever playing at a venue near you: go there.
You'll really like it. Any of their albums are also good, though
the concerts are better. Personally I like "White blood cells"
the most.
The Stones also like the White Stripes, Jack White said in an interview.
According to him, the Stones were watching the Stripes from backstage
when the Stripes played one time as an opening act. Jack White also likes
the Stones. He commented that the Stones showed that there is indeed a
decent way of growing old.

I saw them a couple of years back at the Royal Festival Hall with Jeff Beck.

They performed a mini Yardbirds set with Jeff Beck on lead guitar and with Jack White doing the vocals. It was mind blowing to say the least.

I think Meg White had a special Yardbirds drum kit.

hi big al,

i have been there, too. it was a fantastic show! just 20 min, but the yardbirds songs were really trashy and the voice of jack fitted perfectly! that was a very special set!
there was the original band logo on the base drum...

rock on!

Maybe they loose something in a large concert
setting, but at the Air canada centre, opening
for the Stones, they sucked. I suppose from
what I've heard here I'd be willing to
give them another chance in a small
club setting. Why don't they add
a bass tho?
