I had never heard this story before - the 3rd show of 1981 tour was in Rockford because of a petition created by a radio station. Cool story!

I think you can hear a bit of the Go Go´s at the beginning of the clip.

October 1, 1981
The Metro Center
Rockford, Illinois
300 Elm Street

The MetroCentre in Rockford Illinois opened in 1981. It holds 10,000 seats.

One of the most significant event in MetroCentre history occurred in the inaugural year, when the Rolling Stones made an appearance on their Tattoo You tour. The 10/1/81 concert was added to the tour in response to a radio station petition drive. The actual petitions were cut up and used to hold a lottery for the right to buy tickets. Each person drawn could purchase two of the $15.00 tickets.

According to M. Bonanno a 9.000 sellout. They were selected
from the 36.000 who signed the petition.

btw: about Lee Allen (saxophone)

He played three shows in October 1981 with the Rolling Stones:
on October first at the Metro Centre (Rockford, Illinois), and
on the third and the fourth at Folsom Field (Boulder, Colorado).
According to Ian McLagan,[1] who played keyboards with the Stones
on the 1981 Tattoo You tour, Allen was so bewildered by playing
with the Stones for over 80,000 people in attendance "he [Allen]
completely choked up". Audio recordings of the shows confirm
McLagan. Allen was replaced by Ernie Watts for the remainder of
the tour.

It was mentioned in Bill Germans' book.
According to him it was Bill Graham who followed up the petition.

So I know the story but never heard Lee Allen play with the Stones.
What does it mean musically when Ian said "this guy choked up" ?
Did he hit wrong notes, did he overplay or did he play right and it didn`t fit ?

All shows are available on bootleg. Allen sounds like somebody put a sock in his sax for fun.

Q: Why can't the Go-Go's get pregnant?

A: Because their "lips are sealed"!
