how many have seen the Stones?
Posted by: tussler ()

Nothing creative with this question, but I wonder how many have seen the Stones worldwide? There is always one who know such things, so just tell me. And another silly question, how many gigs have the played?

Stadiums - 8 (CNE Toronto 89, Skydome Toronto 89, CNE Toronto 94, Skydome Toronto 94, Olympic Stadium Montreal 94, Olympic Stadium Montreal 94, Skydome Toronto 98, Skydome Toronto 2002)

Arenas - 2 (ACC Toronto 98, ACC 2002)

My only small venue, one of my faves, Keith and The Winow in 1992 at Massey Hall in Toronto.

Ok, now that I've read your post again I see I'm answering the wrong question. I too would be curious on an estimate as to how many people they've performed to and someone must have an answer as to how many gigs they've ever done. Perhaps the dude that runs this site.

I guess you mean to ask how many people the Stones have played in front of, and how many shows in the world in total? Somebody with the books close or a computer brain should be able to tell. From my extremely bad memory I think they played around 100 shows per tour lately plus minus. And to a crowd of 2-3 million people. So with large tours since 1969 or so, and with 50-100 shows per tour, my wild guess would be 1000 to 1500 shows and may be 20 million people?

About 200 times since 1969.

Stones - 24 times since 1975
x-pensive Winos - 3 times including a TV taping w/ 200 people.
Ronnie - With The Faces in 1975. The Detroit show that's a common boot.
New Barbarians - I wish.
The experience of this - Priceless. Priceless indeed.

They've played exactly 1,900 concerts by my estimations - give or take about two or three!

I've seen them on every tour since Some Girls in 78. I really sorry that i couldn't go back further than that. I have one friend that saw them in 1964 at the Palace Theater in Albany , New York...which would be wild if they ever went there now...

I saw them four times in Austria - time to see to see them abroad on the next tour!

I think you're all misreading the original question. It was "I wonder how many have seen the Stones worldwide?" not "how many times have YOU seen them" or "where have you seen them around the world"

my personal guess would be a bit higher, Bjornulf, in terms of total crowds.

The tours up to 1967 were predominantly theatre tours, as was 1971 . 1970, 1973 and 1976 a mix of theatres and arenas (with a few stadiums in 76). The US tours in '69, '72 and '75 were mostly arenas. '78 a mini Licks concept - theaters, arenas and stadiums!. 1981 almost exclusively stadiums or arenas, 1982 almost all stadiums. 1989 - 1998 the vast majority of shows were in stadiums.

I reckon that since 1989 alone they've probably played to at least 19 million people. I'd reckon the full amount would be closer to around 25 million.

The total number of shows, by my estimations earlier, is 1,900. So maybe they'll hit 2,000 sometime in 2006.

Nice numbers. I suppose they are in the league of their own in that chart? (There must be at least one chart where they are number one after being 40 years in top, 30 years 'biggest', plus plus doing all those trade-mark mega-tours during last 15 yearssmiling smiley - or at least making more money than anyone else from touring?)

making more money - certainly.

Most of the top 10 grossing tours of all time have been Stones tours. Voodoo Lounge is still the #1.

They wouldnt be #1 in the number of live shows played or anywhere near it. they have too many years of inactivity for that to be the case. Dylan for example went 8 years without touring (between '66 and '74) but hes toured almost constantly since 1986. he's probably played more shows in the last 20-25 years than the Stones have in their entire career.

I would also guess that the Grateful Dead's total number of shows would be very high as well.

My own hunch for the most prolific concert act in history would be BB King. He's in his mid 70's and its not been uncommon for him down the years to play 200-300 shows per year.

Literacy isn't too high with Stones fans I guess. In any case...I heard before the last tour that the Stones had passed The Grateful Dead as the band that had played to the most people...whatever that is worth.

A good place for this old-timer to launch his first post:

1) July 3, 1966 - Asbury Park Convention Hall, NJ (was my 14th birthday and snuck away from home on a 1 hour bus trip to see the show. Got in loads of trouble with mom and dad. Tickets if I recall were $3.50.)

2) 1969 - Thanksgiving night - Madison Square Garden - NY

3) 1972 - MSG

4) 1975 - MSG

5) 1978 - MSG

6) 1981 - Chicago

7) 1989 - Atlantic City, NJ

Got married, had kids, haven't been to a show since which breaks my heart!

elmolewis,

66, 69, 72, and 75. Incredible!

In last month, I met a Japanese who could attend and see Janis and Jimi in the 69 Woodstock Festival.

I am jealous of the time you guys had spent with.

Speaking of Janis; at the 1969 MSG show I was at Janis came out and did a song with Tina Turner. Pretty cool!!
