I hope all is well with Mr Lou and it's not health problems; the news is pretty vague.

He was playing 2 shows in Decemeber last year, and cancelled both. Granted, he was playing a festival, and the other date was assumed to be a warm up, so when the festival cancelled he cancelled the other. So this isn't new for him recently. But I agree, he is 70 so I hope everything is alright. Maybe he's just vicious.

Just speaking about his live albums, he has maybe some of the best in the biz. Rock And Roll Animal is arguably one of the best. Easily in the top 10 of all time. Then there's Take No Prisoners, a hilarious yet also amazing document of raw Lou. Another classic live album. Then there's Live In Italy, that personally I think is a tad bland and generic, but granted I haven't given it a really deep listen and people say its still amazing. Then he's got Perfect Night, an awesome document of his material performed in the late 90s that is pretty sparse but still rocking. Then finally there is Animal Serenade, a live album I personally think ranks up there with Rock And Roll Animal for him. An amazing span of songs from his whole career performed with an excellent band. If you haven't heard that album, I highly encourage it. I didn't even know half the songs on there when I first heard it and I became a fan because of those version. There's not one song on there I don't like, including the Raven which I think is a riveting 9 minute piece, and I hate that pretentious shit.

Agreed. Sweet Jane off Rock n Roll Animal almost tops Midnight Rambler off Brussells Affair as a pinnacle of live rock'n'roll. Almost.

Another good live album is American Poet, which for years was available only as a bootleg but was finally released officially in 2001.

His backing band was The Tots, and it was recorded during the Transformer tour at New York's Hempstead Theatre on 26 December 1972.

Then there's another live Lou Reed album released in 1972, Le Bataclan '72, which is listed under the Velvet Underground name because it also features duets with John Cale and a couple of vocal performances by Nico.

He played in Chalmette, LA in fall 1974 after Sally Can't Dance. There's a Freezer recording of it floating around the Internet.

Well you need to give it a "deep listen" -- he never had a better guitar player than Robert Quine.

You take your nom de plume from Steve Miller and think you're cool enough to insult Laurie Anderson? More of a joker than you realize.

As evidenced by the DVD A Night With Lou Reed of his 1983 show at The Bottom Line in NYC. And never did a bald guy look cooler with a cigarette and guitar. Listen also to Fernando Saunders on bass, especially on Wild Side.

Totally agree, a great document.

The LIVE IN ITALY concert was filmed and I believe broadcast on Italian TV -- clips are on youtube. I wish there was a decent DVD release of that show.

"Bland and generic"? I don't think so:

Guess I'll really have to take a listen then! For years, my dad has always said its an excellent release, and with all the other live Lou albums its the just the one for no reason that I've ignored. I'll dig it out at some point.

And American Poet was brought up earlier. Its not official, but yes its also really fantastic. As is the bootleg I have from the Sally Can't Dance tour. Honestly, Lou's just amazing live. Which is why I wish he'd stop cancelling his shows!

Thanks for the tip. I downloaded this last night and am making my way through it and yes, it is really excellent.

Still waiting for the man.

Down here, too. I don't think he's ever played New Orleans.

He did in 74 at the St Bernard Civic Auditorium. There's a good aud recording made that night by the famous Freezer.

Story by Freezer himself :

"I decided NOT to record this concert from the balcony but as close to the stage as possible, for optimum sound.

Going as close as possible is a great idea for getting a fantastic sounding tape, but not so good an idea considering there was only about 1000 people in a hall that normally seats 3500. There was too much open space to be able to hide a 15 pound stereo cassette recorder and a 1 point stereo microphone that resembeled the Hammer Of Thor.

I stuck out, to say the least.

The Larry Raspberry and the Highsteppers set was recorded while seated from the front of the first row.

I moved over closer to the left PA stack for the Lou Reed set to stand and record.

In fact I was so close that the recorder is balanced on the metal police barricade in front of the stage.

Thers is no one and nothing in front of me. I'm holding that large microphone pointed directly at the stack and at the stage, that's why there's seems to be some stereo seperation.

When the show started, the band took the stage without Lou and played the intro to Sweet Jane, and Lou strolled out, his hair dyed blonde and wearing a black sleeveless T-stirt and jeans; rail thin and as pale as a vampire.

Lou then tied off his arm as if he were about to shoot up....he used his microphone cable to tie off with....and produced a syringe filled with a clear liquid. And Lou proceeds to look like he is gonna really shoot up.

AT THIS POINT, a huge St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Deputy IN FULL RIOT GEAR walked out on stage in front of Lou Reed, and faced Lou with his hands on his hips.

He pointed to stage right and escorted Lou off stage.

You can hear the uneasiness in the air. The band is so nervous that they go into Sweet Jane a second time but Lou Reed, upon returning to the stage, sans syringe, starts singing Viscious instead.

The second time they get the song correct, but the damage is done, Lou Reed is visibly shaken and his confidence is gone.

(By the way, Larry Raspberry and the Highsteppers absolutely blew Lou Reed off the stage...I always felt that Lou never took control of the audience after the incident with the cop. And the crowd reaction on both this recording and that of the opening act will show that Lou Reed never got back into his groove after his meeting with that huge Deputy.)

As for the small gap in the recording about 25 minutes into the show.....

I got caught by a roadie while taping.

Remember I said how close I was while making this recording?

Well, I was close enough for a roadie to spot me from the wings and run and stage dive at me.

Luckily I saw him in mid-flight and threw the recorder to a friend....who accidentially switched it off...

I caught that roadie's arms who was swinging at me while screaming at me. "@#$%&, I want that @#$%& tape."

Before there were any punches thrown, we were both grabbed by a VERY big St. Bernard Parish Shreiff's deputy, who shook us both by the back of the collar and asked what the @#$%& were we doing.

Before I could answer, the roadie yelled in the cop's face, "That @#$%& is taping the show and I want that motherfucking tape."

The cop asked me what I was doing and I said just standing there taping and not bothering anyone.

The cop told the roadie, Get back befind the stage and don't let me see you again tonight of you'll see what the inside of our jail looks like.

The roadie said what about the tape, and the cop said I'll take care of it.

To me the cop says go back and sit down and don't be so obvious if you're going to record the concert. {The cop knew me......)

The final outcome: I got to finish recording the show minus about a 3 minute gap"
