What a comeback. Just when you thought it really was doom and gloom for the band's recording career they come back with their strongest single since Love Is Strong. It's punky and fizzes with a youthful energy that puts bands more than half their age to shame. It's also a song that has helped the Stones connect with a younger audience.

Some of Mick's best singing in years, imo. I like the single version the most - something sounds wrong with the album version's mix...

Agree completely. There is also the rythmic change in line "Whats it all about" on the single mix that I like a lot.

Exhilarating proof that the Stones (or at least Mick) still "got it" 50 years after their birth. With its driving beat (a pure shot of adrenaline that mainlines right to the gut), Jagger's balls-to-the-wall vocal performance, and those fabulously-evocative lyrics about shooting up zombies and frackin' deep for oil, Doom and Gloom (the Radio Edit version) smacks modern "rock" bands upside the head and sends them back to class.

Speaking of modern, yes the Radio Edit version is superior, as it turbocharges the strangely inert and lifeless album version. You just have to accept those "modern" / ZZ Top Eliminator production values, and that Keith and Charlie are buried in the mix, and that it doesn't have a particularly satisfying conclusion. A smoking hot number that strikes me as achieving a perfect balance between rock and roll and dance music. No, it's not Start Me Up, but it was the most enjoyable damn song of 2012.

By the way, the transcendent part (to me) is when Mick comes in after the guitar solo and sneers "Fracking deep for oil but there's nothing in the sump; there's kids all picking at the garbage dump..." Sheerly in terms of rhythmic propulsion, this part of the song rivals anything the Stones have ever done.

I guess I'm one of few who actually like the Keith song (One More Shot) better. Even though it's cliche Stones. I liked D&G when it was released but kinda lost interest in it. I don't think it will age all that well.

I like it a lot musically (including the vocal), and of course it passes the whistle test with flying colours.
As for the lyrics ... a lot of the lines are cool and clever, but they don't hang together very well for me.
(LoFL: I sound like Truman Capote whining "there's no STO-ry!" <- obscure Stones reference #763)
But fortunately for me lyrics aren't especially important, so ... I'll take it! :E

One More Shot worked better than D&G live, imo. Mick became too busy on the latter, to give a max performance.

This song has everything I love about the Stones.
That sums it up for me.

I had to get used to the video a bit. The way the band is presented has a bit of an
Aerosmithian look. I'd rather have them in a less serious role: showing the world they're
only shooting the clip because it's a job.

I like both Doom & Gloom, and One More Shot. Now, if they'll just get round to ten more tracks, and a new album.

I am disappointed: there's no fresh stonesarchive product, no reissues, or no new album. It's all gone very quiet.

I'm in the thumbs up camp on this one. Rather surprised no one has slammed it yet.

Great song...too late in their career to be considered a classic, especially without any accompanying airplay but excellent nonetheless.

I like one more shot better as well...

I like d&g but i think Jagger shouts a little more then he sings..
Plus he tries to put more words into the song then it needs..

Would work much better if it was part of a new album of 12 songs....

It's not a particularly Stones like sound, but maybe that's good. We've been bitching about them sounding retro for so long. Mick's lyrics and singing are especially good at this point. (As he also displayed on Plundered My Soul). I'm surprised there wasn't a little more guitar presence. And of course the bass is pointless, and could have been done by a machine. But I kind of like Charlie's drums on this as they're not the usual run of the mill Stones drums. Overall a good entry. It's like they've adapted to this new age, where in a nod to the past we're going back to singles.

I actually find the drumming on D&G. to be refreshing. Charlie is a wonderful drummer, but his style sounds a bit heavy handed on their most recent albums.

as someone else pointed out on here when D&G came out, listen to the drumming on Satisfaction. very simple and basic.

Grrreat track! Not so high on One More Shot, but Doom & Gloom kicks serious A$$! Others already mentioned it, but Mick's singing is fantastic on this one!

A very good song and I agree with the posters above Mick sounds great! I prefer One More Shot though.

I like the riff on Doom and Gloom. I think he's trying too hard to be clever throughout the song which can detract the overall effect an amount of soul. Kind of an Elvis Costello trap. I like One More Shot better.

I HATE the video but love love love the track. Both versions. The GRRR version with the full band has some BEAUTIFUL licks by Ronnie that do not make it into the radio version. Just for the heck of it here they are combined... Radio edit on the right...

I prefer the guitars in the real band version and the beat in the radio version. Wish they had come to a happy medium but I am glad to have both versions!

Really tried to like this one, but just can't..not a very good melody IMHO, not lovin' the lyrics, really hate it when Mick tries to get political, anyway...don't feel it is his best vocal, just not hearing it...but on a more positive note, just adore One More Shot, VERY GOOD melody and vocals, don't understand why One More Shot was not a bigger hit than Doom and Gloom.
