I just came across this article, don't think I've seen it here yet. Ultimate Classic Rock listed their top ten Charlie Watts songs in their January issue.

Here's the list and the link at the bottom. It's a nice tribute to Charlie. Feel free to add your own.

10. Moon is Up
9. 19th Nervous Breakdown
8. Undercover of the Night
7. Gimme Shelter
6. Beast of Burden
5. Satisfaction
4. Tumbling Dice
3. Paint it Black
2. Honky Tonk Women
1. Get off my Cloud

[ultimateclassicrock.com]

Funny: if I remember correctly, the second part is played by Jimmy Miller

There are two tracks. One played by Charlie and one by Miller.

Well no. Tumbling dice is just ONE song. Second part of the studio-version is played by Miller. So how can it be one of the top Charlie-songs if he did not even play the whole song?

Yes. I recently listened to Ya Ya's for the first time in a while, on vinyl, and I noticed that Charlie is outstanding on that whole album.

There's actually four drum tracks -two by Charlie and two by Miller.

Charlie plays the main part until the coda, and he overdubbed over himself to get a harder and more dynamic sound. If you listen closely you hear it mostly in the double snare. Then Miller played the coda, and also there you can hear overdubs like the floor tom.

Charlie was amazing on the 1975 and 1978 tour. And I think I like 1975 better as I like the drum sound more, especially the louder snare.

Look at Start Me Up from Glastonbury 2013. Never been my favourite song but what Charlie does there is simply unbelievable. Forget words like "fills" and "breaks" it's a whole continuum of groove created by one man. It's like riding the donkey downhill at pace. Only his authority over the proceedings enables him to play like that. Good luck to Steve I suppose but I hold it to be self-evident that he won't be able to surprise me in a positive way

I mean you can't talk about fills and breaks anymore when that's basically all of it. He doesn't draw a straight line for even just two bars

Sorry for not beeing quite clear, but yes. Drumtracks by two drummers. As you say, most noticable in parts where the snare strokes aren’t 100% in sync. Also in some places you can hear one player doing a drumfill while the other plays straight. It’s cleverly done though, so it works.

I love the drum sound on all of Emotion Rescue album! Down In The Hole, She's So Cold, Where the Boys Go, etc. I'm not a drummer, so not speaking in terms of quality, technicality..., just the crispness of the sound and great vibe througout.

Casino Boogie..that sound! Did he overdubbed over himself on this one too ?

Thank you all for that interesting informations.
I former thought he'd played the snare from time to time with both hands to get that kind of delay, but I listened closely now and yes...
Well maybe there's only one bassdrum? I cannot realize any delays in that.
