JJF and SFM instrument at the end

In the studio recordings of both Jumpin' Jack Flash and Street Fighting Man, there's a strange sounding instrument in the outros. It's round about 2:50 in JJF, and 2:30 in SFM. Is it an organ of some sort?

And just another question while I'm at it, that solo from Keith in Sympathy for the Devil, to get that high pitched sound you'd use an octave pedal, right?

Most likely a pipe/reed pedal organ on Jumpin' Jack Flash. You see one in the background of various photos of Olympic Studios. This is probably the organ Bill is credited with playing... One big B chord.

Street Fighting Man features Dave Mason playing a Shehnai at the end.

Looks like His Majesty answered your questions! But you can play SFTD at the 12th fret for the solo...no octave pedal needed unless you want to do something different from the studio version in your interpretation.

Sympathy solo and also the lead guitars on Stray Cat Blues is just a really piercing trebley, slightly fuzzy/distorted sound most likely achieved via the Brilliant channel on a Vox Supreme.

They used Vox Supreme's and related amps(not exclusively) from 1967 European tour, Their Satanic Majesties Request, Beggars Banquet and possibly some of Let It Bleed as one can be seen at Redlands in spring 1969.

Dave Mason plays a Shenhai on SFM which is probably what you're referring to.

"The shehnai, shahnai, shenai or mangal vadya, is a wind instrument, a double reed conical oboe, common in North India, West India, Iran, and Pakistan, made out of wood, with a metal flare bell at the end."

Thank you! I think that's what's missing from a large chunk of today's music. It's these slightly off-beat instruments that deviate from the norm of guitar/bass/drums.

Whoever played the organ solo at the end of JJF played a great little solo.

Was it Nicky Hopkins?
