…. Yeah Garage Reggae …

Wonder what Smokey thinks of
Jamaican versions of Dont Look Back
……
Keith & Tex cut it before Tosh ….

Exactly! smoking smiley

And when the Stones finally did it live in 2002, it was Smokey's version.

Not sure what you mean by "exactly" as the Jamaican Keith and Tex version is fantastic, and Smokey probably loved it - probably more so than the Tosh/Jagger version.
And as far as I know Smokey himself never did a version of it - he co-wrote w/fellow Miracle Ron White for the Temptations in '65.

The version Smokey wrote would be more precise.

Yep, he probably loved the Keith/Tex-version. To be reminded of that just made me excited smiling smiley it's been a while.

Eric Donaldson's cherry oh baby wasn't strictly a "reggae" song, it was a song for the Carnival festival song contest way back when and had way more of a calypso feel to it. His later recordings of it were more reggae but the original release on 7" pre in the UK was made for Carnival celebration.

Hey Negrita is not reggae.

Never crossed my mind either, until I heard Ronnie playing the rhythm guitar to it on his radio show with Slash. That has a distinctly reggae flavour; the only one that really works for the Stones IMHO.

This has been discussed before some ten years ago. If you can't hear the reggae influence in Hey Negrita then I don't know in what song anyone would. Here's what Doxa had to say about it back then:

I agree with the suggestion of 'real stuff', but on your way you can warm yourself with these bastard childs of it...

These songs, at least, have a Jamaican or Caribbean flavor (all not exactly reggae, but more kind of ska, rock steady, roots reggae, "but they are all same shit", as one would say):

"Luxury"
"Cherry Oh Baby"
"Hey Negrita"
"Crackin' Up" (live)
"Everything's Turning to Gold"
"Send It to Me"
"Indian Girl"
"Think I'm Going Mad"
"Feel on Baby"
"Too Rude"
"You Don't Have to Mean It"

Keith's "Words of Wonder" from is perhaps the most 'authentic', and of course, "Harder They Come". I need to mention Ronnie's "I Can Feel the Fire" too -the new rhythmical elements - as "Luxury" too - have earlíest adaptations of Jamaican sounds to rock music. If'reggae' category is taken very simply as school books for beginners suggest, perhaps "Send it to Me" is the only 'real' reggae tune.

Add Ronnie and Keith’s Caribbean Boogie to that list.

Face it, the Stones version of Cherry Oh Baby is too stiff and tentative. None of them are especially good on it. Maybe there's a killer live version out there. Some of their songs, like 'If You Can't Rock Me', or 'Dancing With Mr. D.' sounded better, back in the day, where they could stretch it out on stage. By the time they did 'You Don't Have to Mean It', they had a better feel for the music. Keith had spent years playing reggae by then.

I think it's a good cover. Obviously doesn't touch the original by Donaldson ...

I love the Stones cover, and to me it totally blows away the Eric Donaldson original.

It's not even close - but as I always like to emphasize, I heard the Stones version first, if it were the other way around then perhaps I would have like the original better.

I remember an interview or article from around the late 70s or early 80s where it was said that Charlie had considerable problems getting the beat in Cherry Oh Baby. Maybe that's one reason why it sounds a little stiff. Charlie is not a reggae drummer, after all.

Simple. If you can rock the hammock to it, it must be reggae. If you fall out of there, it's out of there

How many rpm (rocks per minute) maximum? Any experimental data? I haven't got a hammock at hand, so I can't check for myself ...
