Jimmy Webb offered them the original 22-minute version of MacArthur Park. They turned him down and never had another hit.
According to wikipedia it took five of them to write that song, Wilson, Parks, Ray Kennedy, Jack Rieley, and Tandyn Almer.
"Sail On Sailor" is sang quite nicely by Blondie Chaplin I might add.
Always thought "Along Comes Mary" was a pot song.

Wikipedia, and yes, I know they can be wrong, lists Carl as the lead singer on that cut. Dennis and Carl are listed as co-writers.

Heard an interesting piece today on NPR about Tandyn Almer, the author of this great song, who died last month at the age of 70.

That song made me want to try marijuana two years before I ever even saw any. The Small Faces subverted me in the same way with Itchycoo Park. It made me want to skip school and get trippin'.

That NPR piece didn't give any mention of "Mary" producer Curt Boettcher who is credited with speeding up the song. In recent years he's become a cult figure among fans of what is now called "sunshine pop" and his work with groups like The Millenium is very highly regarded.

When you listen to "Mary" and other AM hits of 45+ years ago, like "Pretty Ballerina" by the Left Banke, it's striking how substantial the pop music of that era could be.

And I had no idea that Blondie and Ricky Fataar sang the lead on 'Leaving This Town For Another One' on the great Holland album. (From where Sail on Sailor originated). I always thought it was Dennis, but it turns up that neither he, nor Brian, sang any leads on that album.

It's kinda up-tempo for a pot song. I actually prefer the slower, more languid version The Association did in the Ed Sullivan clip I posted earlier. The original studio version sounds like guys on an amphetamine rush.
