Double Nickles is a great call. Also love Husker Du's Zen Arcade and Frank Black's Teenager Of The Year.

The Wings Over America album features heavier versions of songs than their studio album counterparts, thanks to the powerhouse drumming of Joe English and the Gibson SG Standard attack of Jimmy McCulloch. Big difference between a "Double Album" proper, and a overlong single album that just runs over, so they need another piece of vinyl.

This is a Stones forum - you must vote Exile. Anyone who voted for the White Album should be locked in a room with Honey Pie and Goodnight on an endless tape loop.

It seems that double albums are only from the LP era.
Since the early nineties a lot of single albums (one cd) run longer than most 'double albums' (lp).
Double cd albums are mostly packed with filler imho. Although I think All Eyez On Me by 2pac is a hiphop masterpiece.

Is everyone still so sure that EXILE IS SO GREAT? Loved it as a kid but now when you listen to it start to finish it seems it might have lost something in its power? Maybe just a personal revelation but I'm not so sure.

To me it gets even better. I appreciate new layers. Rob, you must be having a bad day; I don't see 'Exile' as an album directed at the enthusiasm of youngbloods.

Well, one problem woth Exile is that it is not well-represented on CD. None of the released versions is bad, but the vinyl versions (except for the RTI pressed Virgin vinyl, which is terrible) have a sense of space and air that allow you to really hear all of the great musicianship and backing vocals on that album. It's also a mix that sounds best over a pair of good speakers, where you can really appreciate the dynamics of the recording. For whatever reason, the digital versions are missing something.

One of the best albums other then that could be:
Physical Graffity - for sure
One of the best live albums could be:
Yessongs - sorry that is 3 Lps, but for the time the live recording is oustanding.

Ok I should not forget exile on main street. For me this is like a work/rehearsal album. It shows the stones getting away from the Isles to other places and it shows their intimate action and musical spirit from that time. However I would not call it the best double album ever.

Heres one from left field "Lubbock on everything"by Terry Allen.Probaly one of the couple of country double albums.A studio one that runs for eighty minutes.BTW its the dogs bollox.Check it out.

Exile features far too many additional musicians for my liking.

The Who - Quadrophenia is the best double album for me.
