Does anybody know the source for STILL LIFE? What shows were the songs recorded at?

On another note regarding Still Life:
I heard it today. The sound is not so good I think. Why was the mix and production made so "groundless"??? I mean: The overall sound of the whole thing is very thin. Why is that?

I just wanted to tell Gazza that 'Brown Sugar' from Live Licks is the MSG version and not the one from Twickenham...

I think Still Life is their worst live release ever, but I prefer soundboard boots of tours over official live releases anyway with the exception of Ya-Yas

you're quite correct and thanks for pointing that out. A lot of the original info I got stated it was Twickenham. I'll make sure I amend that.

I may be in the minority here, but I think Still Life is an awesome live album. The opening chords of Under My Thumb are incredible. Time Is On My Side, Let's Spend The Night, Just My Imagination, etc. are great versions.
I prefer this album to Love You Live or No Security.

Looking at this site it shows Love You Live Sympathy For The Devil
9th July 1975, Inglewood Forum, Los Angeles. That cannot be true, I thought it was from Earls Court 76?

Still Life blows not so much of because of what's on it - but because of what's not. Like many/most Stones live albums, SL suffers in that it fails to even hint at what the tour was all about. Almost all of the better songs performed on the tour are absent. And - one of the few (Imagination) that is represented is done so with an appalling edit that takes the guts right out of the song.

Hi T&A, I think one must remember that this album was released only 5 years after Love You Live, so they probably didn't want to put the same songs on Still Life that were on LYL such as Tumbling Dice, Brown Sugar, JJ Flash, Can't Always Get, HT Women, etc.

What part of JM Imagination is edited? I haven't listened to it in a while, but isn't it played basically the same as the version on the Let's Spend The Night Together movie?

Re: "Still Life" - sources

I recently acquired a CDR copy of "Still Life" from Erik Engholm. Hearing it on a really good sound system, dronk on something or other, it really got me going! I remember when it was released in June 1982 I rang Peaches records to see if it was for sale. The saleslady told me she didn't like the mix. I really didn't know what a mix was then.

Still, I like the mix. And I think it's better than Love You Live or Stripped or No Security of Live Licks as well as the live album they're going to release from the upcoming tour(s).

Maybe I'm just a crank old sook? 'sokay...

How is that version?

Really good. It was used as a b-side of the Going To A Go-Go 7" single, and can be found on the 2CD set "Flashpoint & Collectibles".

I read this somewhere too. But Gazza's infor concurs with Martin Elliott's Complete Recording Sessions. Since I don't have neither show as boot, I can't compare. So what's the truth?

Guess we need the complete LA 75-tapes to be sure...

A full four minutes of JMI (from the second Hampton show, 19.12.81 - not the live broadcast from the day before) has been edited out compared to the 'released' version.

Pretty much all of the songs on 'Lets Spend the Night Together' are heavily edited. Theres something like 25 songs in the film (pretty much the number of songs the Stones played in a 130 minute show in 1981) yet the film only runs for about 90 minutes. The version of JMI from the film comes from Tempe 13.12.81

The exciting part of this then is that somewhere in the vaults are some of the LA 75 shows in perfect quality hopefully we will hear them some day. The same for the full Mocambo tapes.

Re: "Still Life" - sources

so - let's be clear here about tour highlights missing from SL, aside from the 4 minutes edited out of JMI - and none of these are on the previous live release:

Whip
Neighbours
Black Limo
Waiting on a Friend
Let it Bleed
Little T&A
Hang Fire
All Down the Line

..the omission of these songs is unforgiveable and gives the listener a distorted/inaccurate gauge of the power of the tour.

This is what most groups use their reissues for but the Stones can't even put Beast Of Burden back on Still Life let alone add unreleased tracks.

Will future reissues (DVD-A, SACD, BluRay) include bonus tracks to boost the income from further barrel scrapping or will they put them out from the website? The Stones are in a minority for doing nothing, they should allow the bootleggers to do what they want.

You are rigth GR, I even found Beatles in Seattle 64 on dvd the other day. From the Stones NOTHING.... I even throw out the Four Flicks dvd (4 Paris). They suck. Sorry they can do and did so much better before.

Perhaps JY Imagination was edited due to the length of the album? Remember that this was released pre CD and an album can only hold around 40 minutes or so.

T&A, all good choices, but 5 of them are from Tattoo You, so I don't think they'd want to release literally a live version of Tattoo You. With so many songs to choose from, to pick only 10 from the tour, I'm sure everyone has songs that they wished were on the album. I would have liked to have seen LIB and WOAF on there myself, but I think overall, the songs represent a good snapshot of their 18 year career. A double live album would have been awesome.

Re: "Still Life" - sources

yeah - a lot of people forget this album was released prio to the CD age and I guess they didnt want to put out two double live LP's in the space of 4-5 years. (yeah, I know..imagine the Stones not wanting to flood the market with live product/ contract filler...gasp)

"Still Life" is basically an edited version of the "Supergroups in concert" KBFH radio recordings from the '81 tour which have been bootlegged under various titles. Many of the versions of the non-Hampton songs from the live album were on this same broadcast.

Several songs on Still Life and LYL are heavily edited. Take a look here for more info :

[home.datacomm.ch]

This article is actually about 20 years old, but it gives a good insight into the editing and overdubbing done on both live albums
