OT: United States Atlas Recommendation

The Vegas rumours have prompt me into doing a cross country road trip.

I want to stick to 2 lanes roads, atleast for most of the time.

Anyone know of a good atlas that may outline some good routes?

Thanks in advance iorrians!!!

Goodle maps works pretty good, for free. [maps.google.com] Use the "options" for traffic... and you can even do a planner, type in Las Vegas to New York, or where ever. Zoom ability works great, and it will even give you a view from the steet.

I used to use Microsoft's "Streets and trips" too.

Stick with Rand McKally Atlas MingSubu, or at least make sure you have it along with some google map directions. Google maps is not always reliable, especially on less traveled roads and routes. I use google maps all the time for local directions, and they often give me the longer route because it's easier to follow. Rand McKally will probably save you some time.

The drive from Phoenix to Vegas absolutely sucks.

Today, in 2013, two of the fastest / faster growing cities in the nation have yet to be linked by an interstate. Rather, there are several crosses marking the deaths of drivers along the shoulder of the unsafe, two-way traffic "highway" one must take to make that drive.

Pathetic. Pitiful.

The TS prefers 2 lane roads, so that's ok.

I want to head south/southwest and hit some southern states, that I haven't been in yet. Then link up with Rt 66. The latter part, just for historic reasons. I know very little about Rt 66. Is it still the same as back in the day?

Not to sure yet, still very early planning stages. Ultimately depends on what the Stones do. I do know that I want a scenic drive and I'm goin to take my time. Put my feet on the ground and enjoy this beautiful country. I did this from Booth Bay, Maine to Bend, Oregon. What an experience.

Thanks again for the advice guys. Please keep it coming.

In Winslow you are encouraged to stand on street corners. Its been a law since 1972...

I had bad luck there....on the way back to Boston after going to the Stones
benefit concert(Nicaragua earthquake) in January 1973.
The officer raised my ticket price 3 times and showed me the jail cell I'd
be in if I didn't pay up. Finally my crying girlfriend starting screaming at me
so I paid...and off we went.

Ahhhh, so you've done route 66...Dam and Canyon and all....

Well how about I80? Is that bigger then you want to drive?
You can't beat Green River through to Reno...the big little city. Or little big city...or whatever they call it now. Just stay away from the Circus Circus buffet. No wonder its all you can eat

Yep, and the Stones played Route 66 at that show....what a send off.
Did the dam and the big hole in the ground. Now they have this incredible
suspension bridge adjacent to the dam....quite the engineering feat.
haha I know Reno too, the buffet folks must be in bed with the local funeral parlor.

Well, she is a hottie, and from SC she'll marry rich and have herself a brand new
corvette, and I doubt she will be cooking dinners.

Yes & no.

The highway has been decommissioned, so you won't find it on conventional maps.
Many landmarks are still there, some not.

I would use that link I gave you to decide which parts of Route 66 you want to visit.

There are so many options heading west. I would suggest you consider going through Rocky Mountain National Park (Trail Ridge Road and/or Fall Rivers Road) in Estes Park, Colorado then head west towards Moab, Utah through Canyonlands and Arches National Parks. Then go through Capital Reef National Park (or take the Burr Trail through Boulder, UT) to Utah 12. Take Utah 12 past Bryce Canyon National Park. Then 89 to 9 through Zion National Park - Spectacular. Then onto Las Vegas.

Well if you come through Estes, you can stay at my house. It's 50-50 I'll be there. I'd be going to Vegas if this really happens.

Thanks, it is very beautiful. The only problem is me, I am stir crazy, ever since
Jumpin Jack Flash was released.... I can't stay in one place very long, and I
also thrive in big cities....Buenos Aires and Roma.

Route 66: EZ66 Guide For Travelers 2nd ed.

Route 66 Adventure Handbook: Turbocharged 4th ed.

Route 66 Dining and Lodging Guide 16th ed.

I'm doing Pittsburgh --> Chicago to the Pacific. Rt 66 all the way. Hopefully comeback through Vegas. winking smiley Then I'm heading towards Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and then back to Pittsburgh.
