The Top 3 Things You Regret Missing In Rock Music

There must be bands you wished seen, people you wished you met or didn't meet, certain shows you could have attended etc... Give me your top 3 and a brief story behind why it made your list. Obviously it has to be during your lifetime.

For me, the number one thing never changes.

1. Not seeing Led Zeppelin.

I had a ticket in hand for the August 6, 1977 show in Buffalo when just 2 weeks earlier Robert Plant's son passed away cancelling the remaining 5 shows on the tour. Then in 1980 just prior to the announcement of the North American tour and during rehearsals, John Bonham died ending Led Zeppelin and any chance I had to see them.

2. Missing the Rolling Stones 1975 tour final show in Buffalo.

My brother went but my mother felt I was too young to attend that show. I was heartbroken and remember seeing a live shot on the evening news from a friends house I was exiled to for the night. Just seven months later my mom let me attend my first show, David Bowie in March of 1976.

3. Not attending Woodstock and seeing Hendrix and everyone else.

Just too young.

Not seeing Hendrix.

Not seeing Nirvana play L.A. New Years Eve 1993.

Not understanding that 'Sold Out' doesn't mean you can't go to the site of a concert and possibly find some seats. If I'd known that I would have seen the Stones in Louisville in 1981 in an arena.

One more: I opened the L.A. Weekly in February 1987 to read that Bob Dylan, John Fogerty, and George Harrison had gone to a Taj Mahal show down the street from me, at the Palomino Club in North Hollywood, and got up on stage together! Like this:

Passing out at Glastonbury in 1994, and missing Johnny Cash.

Also, 1991: I had an opportunity to see Miles Davis in Cardiff: he was doing some pretty disposable material at the time. I said I wouldn't bother, and that he'll come round again. Six weeks' later he was dead.

24FPS, Thanks for the link.
In retrospect, the Palomino holds its own with any of the best-known London clubs.
..every English rock star who came to LA found his way to the Palomino. It was a best kept secret for a long time.

Jesse Ed Davis died a few months after the gig seen on YouTube. He was a talented but troubled guy and it always meant a lot to him that the "greats" would include him at various nifty sessions and performances.

John Lee Hooker was at Puistoblues festival in South Finland in the early 90's and I did not know about it, only found out years later....

SRW in Pori Jazz around 1984, yet another Drag Race...

Jack Nitzsche speaking about recording...Movie sound tracks... Q&A etc
at Melbourne Film Festival back in 2000 ... I'd spent two days there
but on the Sunday got lazy and thought ...He'll be back another time..

The press reports the next day told of a hip Jack arriving looking like
he'd fell from the cover of Satanic Majesties in Sgt Pepper style miltary jacket and plumed hat .......

Jack passed away back in Hollywood approx 8 weeks later ...

..... the last things Nitzsche produced were 2-3 tracks on
C.C.Adcock's Lafayette Marquis album .... It's well worth reading
the liner notes about C.C's time spent with Mr Nitzsche ....

The biggest, for me, was missing Zeppelin in 1977. I though I'd definitely catch them next time around in L.A. in 1980 or 1981, but...oops.

I don't really have many regrets. I mean, I regret not being born sooner so I could have seen so many great bands/artist that were broken up or dead before I was born, or so I could see The Stones on various tours. But as far as bands that I enjoy that were around in my time, I pretty much covered my bases.

There is one though...

Not getting into the Stones sooner. If I had gotten into them a couple of years sooner (it was about '96 when I did) I could have caught them at the Cotton Bowl on the Voodoo Lounge tour. Or at the very least I could have caught the PPV special from the tour, which I would have enjoyed as well. But I have gotten to see them, so I'm not kicking myself too hard, I just feel like I missed out on some good times I could have been enjoying. Especially since I was actually at the Cotton Bowl like a month and a half later watching one of the worst football games I've ever seen (from a competitive standpoint) when USC whooped the snot out of Texas Tech in the Cotton Bowl Classic. Even though the two aren't really related, it SEEMS like I was so close to being at the even I would rather have attended.

Also, I wish I would have been at one of the shows where Pearl Jam opened for The Stones. Seldom does one get the opportunity to see your two favorite bands on the same bill, but I wasn't able to get to any of those shows.

A few people have mentioned regretting missing Zep in 1977...

All I know is that in St Paul they were horrible, both in terms of Jimmy Page's
incredibly messy playing and a living dead audience. My guitarist friend said
Page was basically faking it by skipping over or half-playing all the interesting
parts...

My favorite memory is the hallways of the arena, which looked like hospital
corridors in a disaster zone, during the show, people stretched out
everywhere on the floor OD-ing, being comforted by friends, with a squadron of
big-bellied cops dragging people to police vans...

I wound up spending about half the show walking the hallways watching this
fantastic horror movie, and the other half inside amazed that Zep could be
this lame live compared to the Stones. (both now and especially then, for me,
Zep's studio recordings, great)

Interesting. I've been reading on blogs and other places regarding this tour, and it's quite fascinating (I was in high school at the time). That tour really was an "event", and I think it was the last of that "over the top" stuff you mention: that Sixties and Seventies high school excess reaching its apogee. Some Stones shows/tours were the same way. I remember going to see The Song Remains The Same and having to high-tail it out of the theater; the audience was so loaded on booze and downers and Zeppelin that it was frightening. However, looking back back, I'm sorry I missed that tour, and the boots from the LA Forum shows that they could delver goods.
