plane sex on the way to pittsburg boot is great both guitars are high in the mix
and also nicky hopkins is not buried in the mix and you can hear him contribute
throuhout.

On Bitch - Keith's guitar tone is killer and mean and he really shines

Keith's intro on GS blasts out of the speakers with Nicky Hopkins right
behind him.great version

keith chomps down the opening chords on YCAGWYW and also a great version

Taylor is brilliant as always. The added bonus is Nicky Hopkins can be heard
throuhgout

plane sex on the way to pittsburg 7/22/72

Taylor's solo on YCAGWYW is 2 minutes of heaven from 3.51 mark to 5.51 mark.
His use of the major scale is brilliant and he floats over the fretboard.

I have been listening to the Rocks Off bootleg from Perth 73 and the arrangement of Gimmie Shelter seems a little different from the regular 72-73 versions. There seems much more piano and percussion at the beginning and Mick Taylor doesn't start playing his prominant lead until the second chorus and even then he plays it a little differently with plenty of wah wah guitar.
Anyone know any good soundboard recordings from the 1970 european tour? - i've no bootlegs from this tour.

The opening licks by keith on this version of GS on plane sex on the way to
pittsburg I am telling you is so seductive and CHARLIE is SWINGING a rock druumer
with a JAZZ mentality.NO SAX intro solo so everyone is on top of their game and
contributing with Nicky Hopkins laying down the melody.

CHARLIE is SWINGING

Is Royal Dragon an "improved" version of this tape?

In all fairness, this a 10th generation SB tape, with only the vox and guitars audible. Sound is further muffled, boomy and in general not pleasent to listen to. I prefer almost any audience tape of the 1972 tour over this tape. The show is as goods as it gets though! By the way, Sweet Virginia is from Fort Worth, not Pittsburgh.

I have "An American Affair", which this Pittsburgh'72 show. I believe Royal Dragon is a later pressing of this one. I agree with Mathijs: it's a real good performance, but the sound is so boomy that I prefer some audience recordings. In my opinion, it sounds somewhat like having Mick's monitor and the guitar amps at full volume in a twelve square meters living room.

I have wondered myself if this is a real soundboard or an audience recording taped from the first row, being blown by the guitarists' amps...

Since the author of the FAQ had no hard information, I was hoping that someone might have actually compared the two:

Pittsburgh 7/22/72; 70 min; "The Royal Dragon"/others
The second 1972 soundboard recording to surface; this one didn't turn up until
the summer of 1996, though it was long rumored in tape trading circles. The
listed CD, which I haven't heard, is said to be "slightly better" than two
previous, similar CDs, which I rate 7.0 s. They were made from a high
generation tape. On all releases Sweet Virginia is from Fort Worth 6/24/72
2nd show, not Pittsburgh.

I think even Royal Dragon is fuzzy and not as clear as the NYC '72 SB.

I haven't heard Royal Dragon, but if it's similar to "An American Affair" (and of course it should be) I bet it's not as clear as NYC 26/07/72.

BTW, and talking about '72 SB, am I guilty of heresy if I say that NYC'72 is a bootleg that deserves some treatment to correct its sound?? I mean, it completely lacks of atmosphere: it sounds like the Stones are playing in a concrete bunker ten meters below ground, without any attendance. That @#$%& NoiseReduction is so heavy that it did kill the ambience.

Many boot labels out there are re-re-re-releasing existent boots. They could take some time and do something good on "Welcome to NY". The audience tapes are available, would it be possible to mix both sources and give the SB a bit of ambience??? Any sound wizard out there, please??

Geez, I'm glad I received The Royal Dragon a couple of weeks ago before reading this post, otherwise I probably wouldn't have bothered. In my book this is an essential '72 boot. Yes, the sound is muffled and the boot lacks atmosphere, but what you get is a 100% seperation of guitars, a very upfront Nicky Hopkins & Taylor, plus an almost complete, very, very hot show! It's ideal for close listening, esp. with headphones and some adjusting. Now how many of those have you?

yep I agree Greg - to get a good quality rec. from the 1972 Tour is always gold!! This one I do listen to regularly.

Incidently, there's a CDr out there called "Sweet Virginia's Saturday Night Smelter's Blues" which is the audience rec. from 1st half of show including the real Sweet Virginia from Pittsburgh !

The Royal Dragon is a tiny bit better than An American Affair (Plane Sex is a copy of American Affair). But the difference is not dramatic: it's the difference between a 8th genaration and a ninth generation tape.

About the no-noise of the NYC SB tape: there's not much you can do with it anymore. Once you have compressed the noise, you can't take the compession back anymore. I have the tape on an old Swinging' Pig vinyl release, and here the tape sound a lot better as they didn't use no-noise. But now you get free vinyl crackles instead. But the lack of athmosphere will remain, as it just is a dry mixing desk soundboard.

The Stones made a Soundboard recording in Pittsburg, so we might get a first generation source in the future. Great show!

Well, from 1970 on the Stones have recorded EVERY gig they played except for the Ia Stewart memorial gig. So, there's hopefully going to be a shipload more shows available as soon as the Stones call it quits.

I didn't know that they recorded all 1971 shows! How do you know?

Last year The Esky Brothers released "Sweet Virginia's Saturday Night Smelter's Blues" which contains the PITTSBURGH version of Sweet Virginia. It's available from anybody on Rolling Stones boots and I can send the cover art as attachments to anybody who emails me privately.

Various interviews with Glyn Johns, Andy Johns, an interview with Keith Harwood, and comments by Jagger, Richards, Taylor and Wood, they all said the recorded all shows and played it back at the hotel to learn from it.

By the way, I listened again to the Royal Dragon title yesterday night, and I must say it isn't half as bad as I remembered! Quite enjoyable actually, Keith and Taylor are sure loud, drums are o.k. The only real problem is the bass, which is boomy. But a hell of a show, and a real Taylor study case for guitarists!

If you've got a great equalizer and a superior sound system and Koss headphones and a few glasses of your favourite BOLS, it's a groove.
