Nice rare Exile outtake (from Nicky Hopkins tapes)
Posted by: LieB ()
Date: January 15, 2013 12:46

This song was linked here a year ago or so, along with a couple of outtakes of well-known Exile songs (such as Rocks Off and Rip This Joint) that showed up on youtube. They were ripped from a Nicky Hopkins boot and are possibly rough mixes that Nicky got during the Nellcote era.

Anyhow, I think this outtake - which to my knowledge has no name - deserves its own thread. It has a lot of Nicky's piano and to my ears it's reminiscent of Wild Horses, Plundered My Soul, Following the River ... certainly no masterpiece but it has that Golden era Stones groove.

It's very nice thumbs up

Many songs are in there. I hear a bit of If You Really Want To Be My Friend as well winking smiley

A bit of "Act Together" too ? Wonder why it wasn't used for the Exile project...

But yes that was a nice surprise, it's not that often that new outtakes become available these days...

2003 - Never Stop (SMU from either 75 or 77, no one seems to agree...)
2006 - Steel Wheels Tapes
2011 - Nicky Hopkins Tapes
2012 - early takes heard in Crossfire Hurricane

What's a bit "annoying" is that a lot of stuff circulates among "private collectors" some of whom are on this board but...oh well, the fun is in the chase/pleasure is in the wait as they say ;-)

Anyway maybe you should add (Nicky Hopkins Tapes) in the title so it attracts more attention in a search.

And now we recently became aware of the "control room- video recordings" from the Undercover sessions. I'd say: Share them! smiling smiley

Is this for real? What's the story there?

Do you mean the Dirty Work sessions ? Yes I'd heard about a video made by fans that had been hand delivered to Ron Wood but I had no idea of its content until our friend Mathijs (sp?) mentioned it was shot from the control room and that he ("and many others" ) had it...not sure what it will take to get it out? Same for the many other uncirculating outtakes (at least "She Was Hot" extended with no DJ voiceover and "Gangster's Moll' from the SW sessions). I guess those who are lucky enough to have that stuff don't have much of an incentive to share it...

Even if I never get to see/here them I'd still be interested in seeing a list of what's been leaked but is not circulating...

Great outtake, thank you for sharing it. I can ear a little bit of "Plunder my soul" and "Following the river" in it.
Rock and roll,

The sad thing is that Nicky Hopkins died, and there's no other like him. He made a good team with Keith, each on his own way

Thanks for the link, Munichhilton. The other Exile-outtakes were pretty interesting too.

And to add, this outtake also reminds me of Tops and Loving Cup. The Richards/Hopkins/Watts/Wyman/Taylor teamwork is great here, but obviously it's just an early backingtrack sort of thing that never became a real song.

Great groove - are there any other choice NIcky Hopkins cuts from the archive's like this?

i've read his boot anthology has 350 songs/takes on it, for a newbie like me that's a lot to delve into - any recommendations out there

What was the relationship between Nicky and Stu like? Were they mates? Was Stu at all resentful of Nicky's ability?

As much as I will always revere Stu you can really tell the songs that Nicky played on. Just a beautiful artist.
