why did they make Dirty Work?
Posted by: peoplewitheyes ()
Date: January 9, 2013 19:55

yes, after listening to it, we´ve all asked this.

but, i mean it as a serious question. Jagger clearly wasn´t in to it, Undercover hadn´t been that well received, they hadn´t toured in several years.

was it purely contractual? ie. they had to deliver some product by a set date?

(cue StonesTod with his ´hilarious´comments)

they were looking ahead and trying to produce something in the here-and-now that wouldn't make a bigger bang seem so bloody awful. genius.

Because Jagger is always looking at current trends, he didn't want to be left out of the whole mid-80s phase of awful music.

Dity Work is better than Dirty Wok

I was around for Dirty Work. Everyone tried real hard and thought it was great. Keith and Ronnie really worked to emulate a horn section with guitars on Harlem Shuffle. It sucks for me that the album hasn't grown in stature but I can say it was an honest effort and guitar driven. Perhaps I'll give it a re-listen..This was their first record for CBS and Charlie was not at his best, there were other drummers who played.

Contactual obligations spring to mind.

I really don't know why they cut the album unless they had too!

Mick spent most of his time working on his own solo album.
Charlie was not in the best of health..

Didn't seem like a good time to make a album....

At least Woodie got in the songwriting action will Mick off doing his own solo album..

Funny that Mick was singing/complaining about someone making someone do the dirty work while... he HAD to deliver a new LP to CBS because of the gigantic record deal they signed.

Not exactly dirty work, recording a record, but almost, perhaps, some recognition of being a slave to your wants ($$$) and 'showing up'.

They did do some interesting things - even some good things - but neither of much made it to the album based on what I've heard outside of the LP. Overall a horrible album, their worst ever; the album cover even says it, along with the title (worst, LP, worst LP cover and worst LP title). Just a bad decision all the way around.

Harlem Shuffle was good though.

Its the ONLY reason...Jagger had too...haha....

If i remember, Keith was pissed because Mick was away more Working on his own solo album
and not with the Stones...Charlie was out of it...And didn't Bill have his problems with Mandy Smith??
Not a good time in Stonesland..

So With really no desire to cut a Stones album from Mick we have DIRTY WORK!

And yet somehow it's still better than She's The Boss.

"Sleep Tonight" is a gem, I think.

True - and heavily borrowed from Coming Down Again so not exactly original. Too Rude is good. Had It With You is good - for a throwaway. Fight is good - something about that song that works somehow.

I loved it when it was 1st released...I said to myself...Wow a great hard rocking album
from the Stones....Thank you....

But after the 1st listen it all went down hill for me..Too much rock and NO roll...haha.

It didn't have that Stones feel to it...Kind of dark and way to harsh...You really miss not having
Mick on the album..

Its like Mick's solo---Missed not having Keith on that.

Mick needs Keith....Keith needs Mick and the Stones need both!

I think they should play some songs live from this era. Not everything is bad.

Cos they didn't want to let Dylan alone.

Mick : "it's the 80's Keith! Dylan was the first legend of the the 60's to trash his legacy with piss-poor releases. We've got to follow him! Let's make some dirty work on par with "Empire Burlesque"!"

strange thing is that there is half a dozen outtakes from the sessions that are lightyears better than the album. Tracks like Strictly Memphis, What Am I Going To Do and Invitation.

My two cents. Keith and Mick seemed to be getting on fine on DW. The hiatus the band took may have been more about Charlie's recovery than a feud. Jagger made "Boss" and did a big tour behind it while the Winos did the same, maybe because Watts was not up to working. One thing is certain when Keith's album came out everyone was blown away by the simple production styled a tiny bit like Exile. Still they made Steel Wheels next which was a massive production, we're still waiting for the stripped down version to re-appear from the studio. Too bad they don't have the confidence in themselves that we have.
