12 January 1963: The "real" 50th anniversary
Posted by: stonehearted ()
Date: January 7, 2013 10:45

As Keith has pointed out, the true 50th anniversary of The Rolling Stones is marked by the first time Charlie joined the band onstage to round out the classic lineup at Ealing Jazz Club on Saturday 12 January 1963.

Site of Ealing Jazz Club at 42A The Broadway, Ealing, London W5 2NP.

The Red Room eh, I'd love to some interior shots...

Just did a tour round the neighbourhood with Google Earth, non descript little biulding, right on the rail line...cheap back in the day no doubt..

Bless Alexis and Cyril, and probably many other unsung enablers, participants and fans who paid a cover

Original Ealing Jazz Club manager Fery Asgari is shown below on 18 July 2011 at the Red Room nightclub that was once the Ealing Jazz Club. The occasion was a benefit hosted by a local group of musicians and fans calling themselves The Ealing Club in the hope of raising proceeds to have a blue plaque installed at the site to commemorate the Ealing Jazz Club's contribution to the development of British R&B.

The benefit campaign [18-20 July 2011] was successful. The Ealing Club's Blue Plaque benefit events resulted in the blue plaque shown below that was put up on the site on 17 March 2012--the 50th anniversary of having become London's first regular venue for R&B with a performance by Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated.

In the right-hand side of the photo below, you will notice the letters ABC--for the Aerated Bread Company tea shop. Ealing Jazz Club was located in the basement of the ABC building.

The building at 42 The Broadway in Ealing that was once the ABC tea shop is now an estate agent. The stairway leading to the alley doorway that was once Ealing Jazz Club, now The Red Room, can be seen on the right.
