I would say number 2, because it has more of a live feel, where number 1 is an obvious mime to the studio track with perhaps only a live lead vocal. If number 2 is a mime, it's a much more spirited one than video number 1. I get bored very easily watching mimed TV "performances" and Charlie always gives it away by hardly moving and by looking more bored than usual. But in clip number 2, Charlie appears to be playing live, he appears to be "involved" in the performance.

The first one. It's a better vocal and the roses really make it.
Although I could be wrong here, I seem to remember the second one as the first one I saw on Don Kirschner.

It's definitely the second one. Because of Mick's hat.

Both clips use a prerecorded backing track with live vocals.

Yes, perhaps you're right. But, soundwise, there's something I like better about the second clip, in that it sounds punchier somehow--probably because it's in mono.

Why is Mick Taylor pretending to play piano in the second clip? Why did they bother to film two versions of what is basically the same track?

I'd go Brussels #1 version just before this one...both very close.

Clearly German cancellor Angela Merkel (the song was even used in an election campaign for her)

Absolutely.

This video made me buy my first Stones album.

They looked so serious and cool, and the roses were memorable.

IMO the second is far superior to the first. In fact I think it's one of their best promos ever. Jagger's appearence is astonishing. His acting - the abrupt shifts between layers of sweetness, longing, cynicism, vulnerability, sincerity, irony theatricallity etc. Jaggers looks. Keith's looks. And Charlie's overbearing/cool/down to earth look on the ongoing popsong-drama.

Similar thing happened to me; except they added "Till the Next Goodbye" clip.
From the days when we didn't know every move from our band months in advance, and got worldwide instant playback on all happening.
I don't think I even knew about the existance of any of the clips; they were definitely not current of the day because this was years later than '75.

Brussels 73 versions are awesome.
The one from the Archive because of the verse sung in french
The one from the KBFH with the vintage 70ies-sounding keyboard solo

The cut to Bill and Charlie (smirking) is the same bit of film in both videos.
