thoughs opinions on one of the greatest american bands ever? also the kantner/slick albums from the early 70's that i see as an extension of the airplane, blows against the empire, sunfighter and baron von tollbooth and the chrome nun.

That was reprehensible...

grace slick was the only member of jefferson airplane in the band known simply as starship. paul kantner and marty balin who formed jefferson airplane don't even count starship as part of the bands history.

again its like saying led zeppelin sucked when they released albums as THE FIRM just because page was in both

Yes, they were once great! Between Surrealistic Pillow until Volunteers they were probably one of the best band around. Spencer Dryden, Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Cassady could really blow up a storm. After bathing at Baxters could maybe be , at least parts of it, a hard cookie to swallow!

Love them. In my top 5 of the US bands.

I've always thought that Jack's Bass playing was one of the best assets of the band and certainly equally great though all the Hot Tuna albums. And Jorma's playing/song writing (e.g. Good Shepherd). Love that San Francisco sound (Airplane/Dead/Quicksilver)

I saw JA many times at Fillmore West circa 1970-72, along with the Dead & Quicksilver, they would take turns who would play 1st, 2nd or 3rd...some of the highest musical moments of my life.Once i went to the Family Dog and saw them practicing.. When JA got crankin and Jorma took off they were out of sight.Great memories

The Airplane was great in its initial run, even with lineup changes.

Very experimental with time changes and weird jams throughout. The Starship
had its moments but without Jack+Jorma it was notches below its predecessor.

I also saw them in New Haven,Ct circa 68-69..Chuck Berry opened up for them..
Jack Cassady one of the coolest bass players ever.
If you dont know Jorma you dont know Jack!!

Love these guys - funny that they never have had any resurgence of popularity or recognition past the late 60's - (versus the Dead for instance). Interesting that Volunteers came out around the time LIB came out - two epic records, both with Nicky playing all over them.

Grace had one of the great rock voices of all time. Powerful.

Marty Balin seemed to be the weak link for me with that band. I never saw them live, by the time I was old enough to, it was the Starship and that was terrible.

Like the early stuff. I also like George Benson's take on White Rabbit. The story was that he didn't know it was about drugs.

Big fan up till Volunteers. But I love the albums Baron Von Tollbooth And The Chrome Nun and Blows Against The Empire. Two stellar and under-appreciated albums.

LOL. Yes Jack is right up there with the best (maybe the best)! I think when Grace was asked what she most loved about the Airplane, she said it was Jack's playing...

Then why is my personalized copy of the Jefferson Airplane box set entitled "Jefferson Airplane Love You, But Hates StonesTod"?

I can only repeat my post from a year ago, `cus I do so agree with meself, but also; beware of Red Octopus, a great album with still some 60s vibe, and some ummistakable 70s vibe in between:

- Lurve them. I think I like them as much as I like The Doors, and I don`t see why the rest of the world don`t do the same. My faves are "Crown of Creation" and "Early Flight", a 1974 compilation of rarities.

Generally speaking, the trouble with "old" music, is that on a superficial level, it`s very much alike the music of today. Thus, the coolness of it all diminishes, undeserved and unfortunately.

Yes, to echo Masseolle51, they definitely were once great.

Grace was so intelligent, with beautiful eyes and a fabulous voice. The band cooked!

Felt sad to see it all go down hill.
